The Passage by Justin Cronin?

It's supposed to be the next best thing in grown-up vamp lit. More The Stand than Twilight, and nice and long (780+ pages!) to last through the summer.

I'm 46 on the wait list at the library, so I'm thinking about ponying up to buy it, but haven't read a lot of reviews. Anyone??

I have never heard of it so I just put it on hold at my local library. I am hold number 141 on the first returned of 10 copies. I think I might be waiting awhile.

This doesn't help you now, but when I saw the wait lists at your libraries I had to reserve at mine. But I am only hold #2 -- so after I read it I will tell you what I think :thumbsup2

I finished it in under a week, I could put it down:banana: Saw the author on Good Morning America and heard all the rave reviews, I crumpled to peer pressure and bought it. I hated to see it over but it was left with the possibility of a sequel:worship: I more than recommend it:)

I read it straight through in about three days, staying up until midnight each night! If you liked Stephen King's "The Stand", you'll like this. It starts out with a situation that turns postapocalyptic (sp?) Some reviewers are calling it a zombie/vampire book, but it's really not exactly. I'm NOT into blood and guts, and there isn't much of either. It IS scary in that it's that "end of the world, how will the few survive" type story, but the character development is really good. I don't think this would be considered a spoiler this is a planned trilogy, so don't expect a wrapped up ending. I got to the last page and thought "but then what happens?" Can't wait for the next one!

A trilogy????? Excellent:banana:

Just finished it this past Sunday.

Yes, I liked it for the most part. Pretty good.

I will say that I was NOT happy with how the book ended. In fact, it kind of pissed me off. Stephen King's books have done that too me a few times (his later stuff) as well as some other authors. There's a way to end a book, even if you want a sequel, and I'm not sure that was it. But it doesn't appear to bother other readers...

:lmao: I'd put this on hold at the library and when I just checked it, I'm number 7 out of 84! Apparently word of mouth is really getting out about this book.

Several book reviews in newspapers and mags have given it glowing reviews. I ended up just buying the darned thing. I would be waiting for years at my library.

I've been looking for a book to read so I just went online to my local library. I'm number 75 :rolleyes1 I think I'll have a long wait.

Good to hear. I had read some reviews about it and added it to my "must read" list but now I wanna run out and buy it.

Have a cruise coming in in August and I think I may need to treat myself to a new book to enjoy while lounging on deck. :hippie:

Hmmm, we're going to my DH's father's house over the 4th weekend, and I'm going to need something to read to fill in the time... I might just have to use my box of odd-change to buy this one, sounds like it might be worth it! :thumbsup2

I read it and loved it. I tried to get DH to read it and he resisted until a few days ago. He had Been up past midnight reading it ever since.

I hear it's going to be made into z movie as well

Yeah, Ridley Scott has bought the movie rights to the book.

I am reading that people are reporting that there are pages missing and parts that were duplicated. Horrible job editing the book. Misspelled words, repeated sentences and passages, sentences that were cut off. One of them begins at the bottom of page 269 and continues on to page 274.

For those that have read the book, are you finding this to be true? Maybe it was just in the first printing and they have caught it and corrected it. I hope so. I would rather wait so that I can be sure that I get a copy that is correct.

Yes, this is true. There was a section that repeated badly. Couldn't believe my eyes when it happened! I think I ran across one or two typos. I have had this happen before in other books. Apparently, you can't find a good editor these days.

Publishing has been hit HARD by the recession. I am sure they had no trouble finding great editors...they probably just had to let a bunch of them go. So what we're seeing is the result of cost-cutting with fewer editors doing the same workload. It's just too bad.

I am #67 out of about 90. Just sitting here waiting...

Thanks for all the responses! Don't you love being able to go online at the library and know excatly where you are in a book queue? It makes the nerd in me so happy! :goodvibes

I just bought it because you guys made it sound so good (even if you haven't read it). :)

It was the last one in the store. They have been selling out once they go on the shelf. I'm currently reading The Help, but after that I can't wait to dive into The Passage. It sounds right up my alley since I just love The Stand. I think my husband will love this book too. My mom wants to read it after we're done, so this book will be used quite a bit.
