Has anyone read Shutter Island?

I just finished this book. It was very good but I am confused about the ending. If anyone has read it could they explain it to me? Or is it up to the reader to decide? I can't wait for the movie to come out!

it has been a while, but IIRC, it is up to the reader to decide whether the main guy's (I forget his name) version of reality is true, or if he's truly a whackjob. Good book, but that ending killed me. I like tidy, clean endings!

My book club read it a few years ago - I remember some pretty spirited discussion about the ending!

I think it is up to the reader to decide.

The movie is set to come out October 2009. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Williams. Martin Scorsese directed it.

When I read it, I didn't think there was anything to "decide" -it did totally shock me though!!!!

I remember not being able to put that one down.
