Has anyone had their impacted wisdom teeth pulled without being put under?

I had all four removed when I was in my 20's. Although only two of them were giving me problems, the dentist told me that the younger a person is, the easy it is to take them out. I am so glad I chose to do them all at once. I was given an IV. It wasn't like I was unconscious though. He told me that it was like a twilight sleep (can't remember his exact words). I would be kind of asleep as long as the IV was running. As soon as he removed it, I "came to." I didn't remember anything. It was very easy.

I had all four wisdom teeth removed. All were impacted. It was done in two proceedures, one side one week and the other the next. Only novacaine was used which I found effective. Though I heard crunching noises and felt pressure, there was no pain, at least not until the novacaine wore off. Then it was hell. Absolutely the worst pain ever. Each time the percocet wore off I'd wake up in horrible pain, then have to eat 2 more so I'd pass back out. I'd rather have gone through child birth again!!!

My Dad's a general dentist and his three closest friends are an endodontist, an orthodontist, and an oral surgeon

I had all 4 done at one time under general. Local was probably an option although the oral surgeon would have done it anyway; my dad has a hard enough time working on my mouth for simple things (I am not a cooperative patient).

It was really fine, I woke up and within minutes I was able to walk by myself to another room to lay down. Pain was horrible when I woke up from that first nap because I fell asleep without taking anything. I was much better within 24 hours and 48 hours later I was out of the house at the movies.

If you are going to do the local I would suggest investing in a good pair of comfortable headphones (larger ones) that fit snuggly on your head. You can listen to your favorite music instead of the crunching of the bone. That might help a little although you will still feel the pressure.
