Has anyone had the chocolate chimichanga at San Angel?

I think it's supposed to have peanut butter and banana something or other... Is it good?

San Angel is taking alot of hits on the "most overrated" thread. Too bad to see that even dessert items are disappointing.

The problem for San Angel is that the few foods it does really well are the very ones most people don't order--the specials. If you order tacos or other "Mexican" foods there, you may well be disappointed and feel you were overcharged. If you try the chef specials (sometimes quite unusual combinations) and if you enjoy truly "non-American" foods, you'll probably be quite pleased, at least, we've always been. Again, though, we never order the standard stuff.

For dessert, we've always enjoyed the flan. It's quite similar to what my Peruvian friend makes. Delicious!

Took,
I agree with you completely. We love San Angel. We never order the Taco Bell type offerings that are on there for people who want to order something "familiar". We think their specialties are delicious. The stranger sounding they are the more the likelihood that we will love it!

Thanks Belle and Took, I wouldn't have thought of that direction. Guilty as charged, I'm afraid I only tend to order what I know as far as San Angel because of the disappointments I've experienced.
I will try your suggestion the next trip !
One last favor--any advice on a cocktails? The margarita's are (in my opinion) terrible !

Don't get me wrong - I really like San Angel. Probably because I do try to order the authentic entrees and not the Americanized options. I was just disappointed in the chimichanga. I love almost anything sweet, but this just wasn't anything special. Can't comment about the flan because the one type of desert I don't particularly like is anything with a custard. blech

We have always loved San Angel too! Makes me sad to see people beat it up. Of course, we don't care for Taco Bell and that is what many Americans consider good Mexican food. We always order specialties, as opposed to Tex Mex. Haven't been there in a couple of years, but the Margaritas used to be wonderful!! Sorry to hear that they are not so great now. Have had some awesome Margaritas at Spoodles--they floated citrus oil on the top for some extra tang. Yummy!

I don't like the margaritas inside either, but I love the Kiwi margaritas that they sell outside.

Could someone give me an example of what types of specialties are offered?

allicat--the mole poblano was one of my favorites. Chicken in a very flavorful traditional Mexican sauce. Not too HOT, very interesting. My husband had excellent salmon there once. I have not looked at the menu in a while.

The Mole Poblano is their best item, in our opinion. My DH loves the queso fundido (appetizer) too. It seems I've also tried a pork dish (I can't remember the name) and swordfish tacos there and loved both.

I love the Pollo A Las Rajas (chicken, sausage, peppers and cheese). Excellent like many here if you order the authentic stuff it's wonderful. But, the Tex-Mex leaves a lot to be desired.
