Has anyone flown Spirit airlines checking golf clubs ?

i was wondering if you were charged extra to check golf clubs ? according to a print out from Spirit, they charge $50 extra at check in for sporting goods.

We usually fly SPIRIT to Orlando, always take golf clubs, and we have never been charged.
