Has anyone ever traveled from one airport to another to get a much cheaper car rental?

Unless you were getting a significantly better rate, I don't think that would be practical.

I have done a weekend rental out of Orlando and then a weekly rate out of Sanford and made out better, but it was not a huge savings.

I rented Budget for a weekend rate (and to get my last RR point for my free tickets) one trip but to rent then the entire stay was expensive. I turned the car in on a Monday morning at Sanford and then rented from National for the week and dropped in Orlando on my return. I think I saved about $40.00 total. Now, I have a house about 10 minutes away from Sanford so this was very easy for me to do and only took about an hour out of my day.

From Disney, I don't think the time wasted to exchange a car in either Sanford or Tampa would be worth it unless the rate was at least a $100 or more savings. It would be at least 3 hours our of your time / day. If you land in one airport and are renting for the entire trip from another, you need to factor in transportation costs as well.

No...I have never done it...I would think the time spent (and $$ to get to other airport)would be cost prohibitive. But it's your time.

Thanks for the replies. At this point it is about $130 cheaper from the other airport. I am hoping that rental rates go down, but so far they seem to be going up.

Which airport are you flying into and which one has the car?

Depending on the airport it may be worth it but you still have to get from one to the other. A one way rental will be about $50 to any "Orlando area" airport.

MCO to Sanford is about 45 minutes (plus tolls), MCO to Tampa is about an hour and a half.
