Has anyone ever tried Omega-3 supplements for ADHD?

 A few of the parents on my school district's Parent Advisory Committee message/support board have had success trying a pharmaceutical grade Omega-3 supplement to help their children, all with multiple "issues", increase their ability to focus. Anyone out there on the DIS ever tried that? Just thought I would ask.

Thanks.

yes we tried it to no avail, however. we have put him on the feingold diet which has made a HUGE difference to him, and us.
hope that helps

I buy the Omega 3, 6, 9 for my son who has Down syndrome. Also to help him focus. Not sure if it works, but I know the omegas are good for him. And he is a picky eater so I figure it definitely won't hurt.

I don't have any experience with ADHD, but I just went to a natural path. She is a nurse, she practiced as a nurse for 15 years. Then did training as a naturalpath, and all the vitamins, minerals, suppliments, probiotics etc.

I have had stomach and severe allergies for 10+ years, and just been on the supplements she tested me deficient in, and things have improved, even though i've been to many, many medical docs over the years, been given other rx meds, but not of much help as all. Its spring here, and i've been waking up in the morning and been able to breath even when the previous day i was outside around things I was allergic too, normally it would be a week of stuffiness. For the allergies its a mineral called molybdenum, which is a trace mineral used to break down petroleum, and other products around us every day. Since i was deficient, my body just kept over reacting and couldn't process the substances.

I had to wait 3 months to get in to see her, and she doesn't accept insurance, as its on the iffy side, where insurance doesn't recognize it as helpful yet. She follows her training and guidelines about how she gives the suppliments. But, she mentioned she has helped some kids too, w/ adhd.

Most doctors don't have training in suppliments and vitamins, etc. So, they don't even know what your missing or not, so, even if you asked or told them what you were taking they wouldn't know if it was helpful.

I had been taking some suppliments on a guess as to what I was missing, so going to someone who was trained to figure it out was a relief and so helpful.

Our psychiatrist, a regular old allopathic p-doc, recommended them when he was only 4 and the psychiatrist was hesitant to start psychotropic meds. We swear by it now, and on the rare occasions that we forget to give it to him, we can really tell. I take it myself too and I find it really helps my mood. YMMV, but it worked for us. I tend to be pretty skeptical of non-scientific "remedies," but this apparently has some pretty rigorous research behind it.

I tried to no avail to get my DD to take Omega 3's. She has ASD but I also take them and have noticed that I am calmer when I take them. I also heard that fish oils help with keeping people calm.

You might want to try a liquid form for your DD. We use 5 ml daily of Ascenta Nurat Sea from a local health food store. 5 ml= 1500 mg of Omega 3. It is a liquid that is lemon flavoured that you add to a small amount (one or two ounces of juice).

cost us about $18 for a 200 ml bottle.

Just wanted to thank the OP for this post!!!!!!! I did some research and recommend to my patients family that they start him and his sister on them. He has Down's, and we were seeing small signs of progress with him the next day...after 3 days he is following instruction quicker and more accurately.

His 13yo sis with severe ADHD was started on it. She notices a difference in herself too, she's not so sure that she likes it. She's used to the "high", and admits that she misses being "spacey". It's actually quite nice to be around her now, she doesn't make my head spin so much :lol

The mom has also been taking it, and says it's helping her mood to be more stable.

So, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! And I can recommend that everyone should try it...it may help, and as long as you aren't allergice to any of the ingredients, it certainly won't hurt!

lisa, thanks! That's great to know. I finally ordered it online for my kids. A coworker gave me a site that he swears by and they were actually having a special on the kids Omega-3 supplement. Hooray! I am really hoping that it makes a difference. Still just a little skeptical but we'll see.

Hope you see continued results!

Lisa :goodvibes
