Just curious. I'm trying to figure out how far away this is from the New Orleans area. Not planning a trip anytime soon, but aiming for maybe 2007, a quick visit. I really want to stay at this place, The Myrtles (it's been featured on a lot of haunting shows) , but not sure how far away it is from anything else to do.

Is anyone familiar with this area?

Thanks!

Yep, we've stayed there a couple of times.

It's about a 45 minute drive from Baton Rouge, so it should be about an hour and a half to 2 hours from N.O.

Be sure to take the candlelight tour. It's alot of fun, and the history of that plantation is so interesting.

We've stayed in the guesthouses out back, and in the plantation itself. Yes, I absolutely *did* hear things go bump in the middle of the night. But I tend to be a skeptic, so looking back, I think maybe it was something the plantation management rigged up to increase intruige. But who knows...maybe it really *was* ghosts. It sure gave me a fright!

Have fun!

ETA: I forgot to answer your other question about what else is there to do in that area: really, not a whole lot. There are some quaint antique shops in St. Francisville, and you can visit the area where John Audobon worked on his bird sketches. There are also a couple more plantation homes that you can tour, but that's about it. But BR isn't far, and there are a few things to do there.

Very cool. Thanks. :)

I'm thinking maybe this would be something then, to tack on to a NO trip. The candlelight tour sounds awesome. I think the whole place is absolutely beautiful.

I have not stayed at the Myrtles but I did take a tour of it and of St Francisville a few years ago during a girl scout weekend (the campground used by the local girl scout council is nearby) when the tour was offered during a workshop weekend. We had a great guide who knew a lot of the lore of the house. At least at the time there was also a restaurant located there. I have heard some young couples have their wedding reception in the house.

Not sure what time of year you are planning the trip. My visit was in November and it was nice. It is very humid and hot in these parts right now.

On my tour we did stop in some of the shops, very quaint. There are also a good many quaint older houses in the vicinity that people live in. You can't enter the homes but they are fun to see. There are also several historical churches with a lot of history and some ancient graveyards. I would definitely recommend going on a tour to get the most of your visit.

I'm planning a trip to the Myrtles myself. I would like to post about my trip and the actual facts of what goes on down there in Louisiana. :cool1:

I've stayed there a few times and let me just say that it's a strange place. It's worth a stay even though the owner has let the house get a bit rundown and the breakfast was hideous the last time we were there. The house and grounds are very nice and the camraderie between the guests once the gates are closed is a lot of fun. Be sure to take a cooler with drinks and snacks. The restaurant is OK but the real attraction is the house itself of course.

I recommend staying in one of the two suites. They cost a bit more but the upstairs suite allows a bit more access to the house after hours including the rather notorious staircase, mirror and a really spooky downstairs parlor.

Oh, if you're energetic and have a bit of extra time be sure to drive into Natchez Mississippi for shopping, dining and gambling. It's only about 50 miles straight north and while St Francisville is a lovely town with lots of lovely homes and other sights, there isn't much to do in the evenings.

ETA: I just noticed how old this thread was. I guess that my answer is directed at you goddess.

Thank you for that tid bit of information Planogirl! I'm so glad you mentioned the word gambling in here so now my boyfriend will definetley go with me!! I wasn't planning on staying there. I wanted to take just a tour although I'm sure staying there would be fun. I noticed in your enquiry you mentioned the present owners let the place run down a bit. I wasn't surprised when you said that because after reading Frances Kermeens book about the plantation, I doubt anyone can keep up! :rotfl2:

Hi!

We just stayed there in Dec. '05! We loved it. We stayed in the guest house but had the opportunity to check out the rest of the property. The staff was really friendly. I have to disagree with Planogirl about the restaurant (Carriage House).....they have an award winning chef and everything we had was great!!. I had some really specific food prep requests and they were able to improvise and come up with some amazing stuff for me!!! :thumbsup2 ..I do agree that the breakfast, which is not part of the restaurant, is less than fabulous. It pretty much just keeps you from going hungry until you can get a real breakfast!! LOL!! We are planning to re-visit this winter!!

If you go during October, be sure to check out some of the Ghost tours! We did one a couple years ago on Halloween Eve. It was fun and learned alot about the history of the planation and the ghosts that 'live' there. Although we didn't experience anything, it was still fun!

And while you are here, be sure to go down to New Orleans and give them some tourism money! They sure do need it now more than ever!

My mom has been wanting to go there and is planning to do a weekend there soon. It is not for me!! I can't wait to find out if she sees any ghosts!! It is one of the most haunted houses in the U.S.

Thanks everyone for responding! Especially to Lucas you just made my day. See that's my boyfriends name and he don't believe in ghosts. After planogirl mentioned gambling he might reconcider. But now that I see the name on here, y'all are making it look like a real possiblity! :cheer2:

When I lived in Baton Rouge we went quite a bit.

We would go on Halloween night when they dressed up as the people who lived there back in the day.

Worth the trip.
