Has anyone ever joined the silent auction?

I seen a lot of great stuff last time I cruised but I was too shy to ask somebody how to join and how it works? They had a plate from Animators Palette that I would of loved to bid on. If somebody has participated ...Please give me the inside scoop! Thanks.... :yo-yo: :yo-yo: :yo-yo:

We have looked at it, but some of the bids were so outrageous we never did place any bids.

Now, on the Magic anyway, they have Park West, live auctions. They auction fine art and disney memoribilia (things like they have at the silent auction and a lot more). It is a total blast. We loved it. Picked up some really great stuff. Any yes, they auctioned off two different styles of animators palate plates while we were there.

So, set aside some cash for your auction fund..lol.

On our very first cruise, a 4 day on the Wonder, I bid for one of the crew jackets. The blue ones with fleese liners. It has the wonder logo embroidered on it. I "won" the auction. It's really easy, you just enter your name, bid and state room number. You watch the auction during the week and if some one bids higher, you decide if you want to out bid them, you enter a new bid. The last night of the crusie they'll call you if you've "won". I love the jacket, it's one of my warmest and water proof. I had it with me on the last cruise in January and actually wore it on deck one night. It drew some looks from other quests.

There are some fun things available at the auctions, but the opening bid prices that they set are, in our opinion, too high to make the event a true auction.

If I remember correctly, (you never know these days) Verandah Man also won something (a plate?) from the auction.. :goodvibes

A couple of years ago I bid on quite a few items from the "silent auction". I got the Inaugural Western Magic 2002 LE pin (framed and about 1/3 larger than the orignal pin) and it got quite high. As they were taking the sheets away, a CM let me put a final bid down and that is how quickly I got it. The other items I didn't care about. IMHO - I think it is best not to place an initial bid until several days into the auction and then it wouldn't go as high.

On our last cruise I was 'won' a framed picture of Walt and Lillian, the one that hangs in the staterooms, and a 'model sheet' of the wall in Lumiere's. Someone else wanted the picture just as badly as I did, but I snuck in at the last second and put in my bid.
I can't wait for the live auction in August, that could get me in trouble. I'm glad to hear they have Disney items as well as other art. Credit card watch out :earseek:

On the Wonder in February I won a beautiful framed print of Disney characters on the ship which they had also signed.

It cost me $300.00 and I also placed the bid in the last minute.

The CM was absolutely fantastic when I explained that I had to get it home to the UK and wrapped it in about half a mile of bubble wrap!

Can't wait for the next cruise and auction.

Wow! Thanks for all the tips..so.....I need to NOT bid until the last day to keep the price down...and bid very close to the end if all possible? I thought some things were priced very high also but there were a couple bowls and other items I would love to bid on....THANKS AGAIN FOR THE LESSON :teacher:

On the 7 day they run 2 auctions, Sun -Tues and Wed-Fri I think. I didn't realize that, we were thinking about bidding on a map with the ships route on it, we never bid at the start of the week, come Wed I see that the auction closed and nobody bid. It was available again in the 2nd, problem was 4 people bid on it and drove it up to $500, could have had for 200 if I had realize when it actually ended

Actually, it was the litho of "Donald and Goofy" from the "Happy New Year 2003 Cruise" that is in the photo below. I put my bid in at 7:58pm on Friday night.

I won an "ultimate disney trivia book 4 " signed by one of the authors. Retails for $11 and I got it for fourteen.

I would agree that waiting until the end to bid is a better strategy. Make sure to remember when the auction ends and BE THERE to enter a final bid if you really want an item.

I agree that the minimum bids for almost all of the items was too high. Figure out the maximum you would want to pay for an item you are interested in and do not exceed that amount.

It is easy to bid. Make sure you make the minimum bid or it will be canceled. I have an Animator's Palette plate and a framed Lifevest instruction sheet. Set a maximum bid and hope for the best. I have seen people hover around the area at the closing time to make sure they get what they want.

we collect those pressed pennies...not a "real collector", just get them whenever we see the machine, and we have them in a little tin...not really "fancily displayed"...

anyways, when we went on the magic, they had a frame w/4 or 5 of those pressed pennies...DH wanted to get that! opening bid was $100. i just couldn't see paying that much for something like that! so we didn't.

i wish they still have those machines around the ship, so regular folks can get them! oh well... :flower:

We actually bid on, and won, the framed pressed coins. I think DH got it for about $200. A CM in the store told him it was the last one they had so that made him go higher than he wanted to. Our ds was thrilled! He filled an entire penny press book at WDW before we got on the ship.

oh good for you!!!! is it displayed on your wall? must be neat! :flower:
