I had just pulled out of the driveway this evening and started to go forward when my car horn started blaring for a few seconds. I have no idea why it did this (or why it stopped), but I am afraid of it happening again (and am imagining times that it would happen again to be very embarrassing indeed). Have any of you had this happen? Do you know why it happens? Thanks!

This happened to my DH's car last winter. We got a phone call at 2 in the morning from the police department saying that the horn on DH's car was blaring. We didn't hear it because it was parked up the block. DH couldn't get it to stop so he drove the car to an empty parking lot and kept banging on the dash until it stopped. We had the car for 10 years and that was the one and only time it happened. DH guessed it was due to the extreme cold and a short, but we were never sure.

Years ago, with a '66 Ford, it used to happen. It was from misaligned contacts in the horn switch that, when very cold, would make contact and close the electric circuit, normally accomplished by pushing on the horn. I would have to pop the wire off the horn relay under the hood.

Yes, years ago during a cold winter night. We heard the horn, not dreaming it was ours. DH was a volunteer fireman so we heard the police talking about it on the scanner. I think DH finally got up and realized it was ours, ran out and disconnected the wires:o

Does this bring back memories. Not our car, but the neighbors.

It was during the heat of the summer. Maybe something to do with the humidity. Every night between 3-4 in the morning his horn would start beeping. You could hear him out there cussing and pounding the horn. He finally got the horn repaired after several weeks.

Good thing I think he was on everyones "Hit List"

This happened to a friend of mine a few times. Then around 2 o'clock in the morning it decided to go off and stay! She didn't realize what was going on, she was out. Our houses were diagonal from each other, so I (the light sleeper in the neighborhood) had to run over there in my pj's to turn it off. Since it was dark I couldn't find the wire for the horn. I just disconnected the battery! The next morning she just couldn’t figure out why her car wouldn't start.

It did do it a few more nights so she finally took it in and had it serviced.

Not me, thank goodness! But I remember a History professor years ago telling our class that when his sister was driving her car, the steering wheel came off the column!

haha man i thought i was the only one this ever happened to.

The springs between the contacts in my horn on the steering wheel were gone, and on cold nights, usually around 4 or 5 in the morning, my horn would go off for not aparant reason. The quick fix was to just remove the fuse for the horn! LOL

never did get it fixed so i still have no horn now! heheh

It wasn't actually the horn per say, but, while my car was in the shop for repairs, I was using my friends car, he forgot to mention about his car alarm.

I had stopped at a pizza shop to pick up a pizza for dinner, when I went to open the car door, the alarm, horn, lights, sirens, all started going off. It was around the corner from the police station.

I finally got a hold of my friend's wife, told her what happened, when she stopped laughing, and got herself up off the floor, she told me how to turn the alarm off. By this time, the police had already showed up, it was quite embarrassing, I gave my cell phone to the officer and my friend's wife told the officer that I was borrowing their car, of course, she was still laughing, and so was the officer, when he handed my cell phone back to me.

I've never borrowed their car again!!!
