Has anyone ever flown Spirit?

My dh and golfing buddies have been trying to get October dates to fly from platsburgh to myrtle beach. They have been unable to book on the website and when they inquired, were told Spirit is discontinuing those flights as of September 3rd! The website currently just lists those flights as unavailable! The guys booked with another airline, as something is definitely up with Spirit! Spirit was one of the few direct flights to Myrtle Beach from the NE USA, so it was very popular. Why would they not cancel the service up front and remove it from where they fly? Something is fishy!

I flew Spirit from NY to Fort Lauderdale over MLK weekend, and it wasn't that bad.

I did pay extra for the "Big Front Seat", and that's the only way I'd fly with them again. My trade off was only packing a backpack, so I didn't end up paying for too many extras. This would only work for a short weekend. I'd consider flying them again, only if I could get the "Big Front Seat" and only if it worked out to much less than another airlines.

The one thing you don't have to worry about is safety - they are regulated just like all airlines. (Well - you'll be as safe as you can expect to be on any other carrier.)

But - OMG, what a nightmare experience for me. Once in my lifetime was plenty. Where do they get these miserable planes? and no water for passengers?

On the otherhand, my BIL has flown them twice, and I haven't heard any complaints from him. (He's a saint though.)

OP - Once you add in the extra fees, how much will you be saving? With five people, it could be a significant amount, but please be mentally prepared.

We will be flying spirit out of Detroit again next month, it's our third time flying with them. We have had no problems. Yes you pay for larger carry ons but you're entitled to a free personal item up to 16"x14"x12" so my kids bring backpacks which works. I once forgot my purse on the plane and the staff were great making sure I got it back ASAP. The planes were clean and seemed to be in good repair. We bring our own snacks and have never paid for seat selection and had no problems being seated together. We save a small fortune when we fly with spirit so I'm quite happy with them. There are certain seats in the front that have more leg room that you can choose online. Yes there is an extra fee for this.

It is good to know about the upfront seating option.

I was spoiled with Airtran. They had the best prices and customer service of any airline that flew the DFW to MCO route.
