This is inspired by the scam thread.

Has anyone online ever done anything nice for you that you'll always be grateful for?

I have. Years ago, when DH and I were still fairly poor, he had left an ink pen in his pocket and it ruined an entire load of my clothes -- in fact, almost all the tops that I owned at the time. I had vented about it on an e-mail list I belonged to, and a few of the women there sent me some of their own clothes. I was so grateful to them because at that point in my life, there was no way I could afford to go out and replace what I'd lost.

And best of all, I recently lost my WDW resort pen, and Anne/Ducklite sent me a whole package of them! Priceless!

When we first moved to Florida, almost 2 years ago, I immediately started working outside on my flower gardens. There was a plant, brugmansia, that I totally adored, but could not find anywhere local to purchase. I am really iffy about ordering plants online, so I wanted to get one locally.

Well, the DIS has a lovely gardening board, and one of the members - Angela (dandave on the DIS) - sent me a brugmansia she had in her yard! She would not let me pay her for it, or for shipping either! I have since taken cuttings from it, and I now have 3 beautiful brugmansias!! :sunny:

I have not seen her post in a while, but I think about her sometimes when I am out in the garden. If you are out there Angela - THANKS AGAIN!! :goodvibes

Yes, a few times. One of the sites I visit was called dealhunting and when my godson was sick (he had cancer) the lady that had the site gave me enough amazon gc codes to buy him a game boy to use in the hospital while he was getting treatments. And when we were going to go on a Disney Cruise I was asking about the handicap rooms etc on the ship to see what he would be able to do (by then he was in a wheelchair) and Shirley of Perfect gift that posts on the boards IM'd me asking if she could send him a basket to be in the room when he boarded...it was so sweet....he never got to get it though, the cruise was April 26th and he died on April 8th but it was a very nice gesture!!
And on a Nov Moms board I post on one of our nov moms was diagnosed with cancer (she had 6 kids) we all met in Niagara flass one year, very nice family....well all the girls in the group alternated weeks of sending her little gifts or food (I sent omaha steaks the kids could throw on the grill) because she was to ill to cook...we also each took one of the kids and sent them gifts at Christmas time...she passed away and will be missed. Meanwhile when my daughter had her tonsils out that ladys husband sent my daughter a "smile box"...very sweet! So I have had more good experiences than bad.

I had the NICEST ebay seller a few years ogo. I was going to NYC to see the Rosie O'Donnell show. Garth Brooks was going to be her guest for that show. Everyone that was going had a Garth T-shirt, except for one of my friends. I found someone selling one on Ebay, but it was before I had discovered Paypal. There was no time to wait for him to get my money order, and THEN send me the shirt. So, on my promise of getting the MO in the mail that day, he did the same and mailed the shirt right out, before payment. We had it in time for our trip. I was super grateful.

YES!!!!

I have a very good internet friend that just sent me the 5 set WDW CDs....and he has sent me countless other things over the years. :)

There is another diser that has sent me birthday and christmas gifts...love ya Beth! :goodvibes

Finally, last Halloween my youngest son was scared to death by a neighbor man and he refused to trick or treat. :guilty: An amazing lady by the name of CathyCanada sent him a package full of candy and a stuffed Donald!! I will never forget her amazing generosity. :cloud9:

You do have to watch out for the slimeballs but there are many more good people out there than the latter! :thumbsup2

yep..
i have two friends i met on the DIS that have helped me out alot the last several months (thanks tina and kim!) Kim and I dont live that far from each other and have visited back and forth and went to a couple DISmeets

A couple months ago, i had another DISer send me a donation for a bike ride that my brother was doing in memory of a friend of ours that died from cancer

Absolutely! I mentioned on a DIS thread once how much I loved the original Once Upon A Mattress with Carol Burnett. Towncrier sent me a copy!

I've also had people contact me to offer to help with the expense on complimentary baskets I've done for people visiting WDW under unusual circumstances such as illness, etc. While I make the decision to do the baskets, it is always so nice to have a little help! Thanks again to those of you with pixie dust in your hearts!

Last year, (as some of you know), my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August & we lost him exactly 3 months later in November. Some DISers, former DISers, webmasters, & mods all reached out to me during that difficult time. I'm a single mom & the family I'm close to live 800 miles away. I don't think they will ever really know how much that meant to me.

Won't go to deep into details .

But someone her on the DIS did something very very nice for DD just this month.

We have also passed along some Pixie dust.

I think it's a mindset for most people here on the Dis and a Family type feel of Disney in General.

I know some seem like the Villians side but for the most part I think most would and DO what they can.

A couple of times over here....
A few years ago both my husband and I lost our jobs (mine was a case of me being a whistleblower...they found out it was me, and I was fired). Family had been helping us out, but it got to the point where we couldn't even afford groceries...because our money had to go to bills and rent. I run a message board dedsigned for a very serious purpose and one of my moderators (a woman I've never met in person) found out our situation and mailed us a $100 gift card for a grocery store...and another woman from the board sent us 2 huge boxes filled with canned & boxed goods. It was incredible. It was also amazing because what they sent us lasted until we found jobs again and were able to buy groceries again.

The second was when my grandfather passed away a couple of years ago...the women from my board collected money and sent me a several beautiful plants (which I still have).

We really have a spirit of giving on my board. There was one case of a woman's husband who was really delusional and did some awful stuff to her (she has since divorced him) so I set up a private forum and arranged for people to send me money...and every last penny went towards various gift items for her. She wound up being sent a huge gift baskets filled with candles, lotions & sprays, devotion books, Willow Tree angel figurines, and individual cards from everyone who participated. It was something she never expected or even hinted at....but we all loved her so much and wanted to do this for her.

We've also done a "card blast"...where we will "blast" someone with cards over the course of a couple of weeks if they're going through a particularly rough time. Those don't happen too often because we don't want people to expect it.

That all said, since I'm the administrator of the board, I'm very careful about which members we will do this for because I don't want anyone to be taken advantage of. So I make sure that only those who are established members will have access to forums where we arrange things like this (and the access list is very regularly pruned) or they have to be established in order to be on the receiving end.

one disser knows that i like thee pirates, and feel a closeness to them with the siomilar looks we share,,lol,,( eye patch, longh air, bandana , etc?)

she got me a potc antenea topper and sent it to me :)

thanks again beth.

(yeah its the same beth that tm2 was talking about,,lol)

another trio of disers set up a e mail campaign trying to get me onto the show miracle workers , after i saw the show and thought it was a great idea the way they were helping people, the show was since cancelled, but i really appreciate everyhting chuck, linda, crystal and heidi did to get my name in the front of thier list.

and the 800 or so other disers that sent emails,, god bless ya all.

two posts mainly because the cat was playing with the mouse and clicked the submit button some how.

A few yrs ago, I was going through a rough ordeal with my daughter. My friends on the SD Cheerleader thread sent me a beautiful floral arrangement as well as cards from each of them individually.
I still have each of those cards.

There was another lady that I bought Disney pins from on E-Bay. After a while, she just started writing me and telling me when she was going to the park for new releases and she would get the ones I wanted and send them to me for their actual cost.

Yep. Once, I had a rental car and was driving on the beltway around DC at nearly midnight. The rental car's transmission blew. I had a flight to catch at 7am, and the rental car company said they'd come and get me with a new car the next day which would have made me miss the flight. I had dd2 with me, too, sleeping in the car. All I knew was that smoke was pouring out of the rental on HUge FREEWAY! I got dd out of the car, and went a bit away. Thought the car was catching fire. Lots of cars saw me holding her, and stopped. One was a man in a minivan with a car phone, and his wife and 3 kids in the car. He called hotels with shuttles to the airport (the one I had booked didn't have that), drove me and dd there, went inside to talk to the front desk about the shuttle stuff. While there, he paid for the room on his Amex and also prepaid $35 for dd and I to get breakfast. I was floored. I didn't own a credit card and don't know what I would have done...taken taxis, I guess.

Sad part: he gave me his address at my insistence, so I could pay him back and send a Thank You. My dh at the time found the address, insisted I was cheating on him, filed for divorce, and burned the paper with the address.

This was back when I was 20 and clueless. That man "Joe" insisted that one day, his wife and kids got a flat on the freeway and nobody stopped to help. All he wanted was for me, if I ever see a mom and kids in that type of situation, to pass on the good deed to them.

Another story:

My family arrived at AsSp last year and the front desk said there was a package for us. It was a surprise package of gifts for my kids from a DISboard member, Cheryl. I was surprised, and that was the absolutely most magical part of our trip.

Lots of great things, a dis'er sent my DD a Minnie rain poncho and how could I forget all the 100 days of school postcards.

When I first started visiting the DIS, I asked about birthday celebrations for my son, who would be having a birthday on our first trip to WDW. I can't remember the lady's name (it's been years ago), but a DISer told me that she was going to WDW that week and would pick up a birthday button for him. She mailed it to me, and it meant so much to me. We still have it!

I was amazed that someone I had never met would go through the trouble. If you're still on the DIS, thanks so much!!!

Also, thanks to VerandahMan for sending the postcard from Mickey before our cruise last year. I think it meant more to me than to my kids, lol.

Lori P. :)

Dan has done some wonderful things for my family. One of the things that was "fun" was last year we were at the S/D and it was Dad's b-day. Dan sent him birthday cookies and milk up to the room. It was a fun surprise and Dad got a kick out of it! (My dad has terminal cancer and it seems to put a new perspective on each b-day!)I think many of us know how special Dan is and know how he reaches out to many of us DISers in different ways. I have realized how blessed I am to have a friend like him.

Moof sent me the "Fabulous Prize" once and it was something to use to WDW which made the trip a bit more fun!

Tink33 (Lesley) sent me a Beach Boy CB out of the blue once that just made my day! She will always be a special DISer to me!

eeyoremountainpals has sent us a huge box of homemade goodies for the Firefighters at the Oak Ridge Plant and some for my family also! Kathy is a super kind person!

#1DisneyFan actually won the fabulous prize for me. She is a special young lady who I haven't kept up with. She sent me a darling keychain from Canada!

Blondie, Deb, Mare, Laurie, Janice, and Bet have all walked me through some tough days and shared many happy times with me also. They are specials ladies in my life.

DISers are special people, for sure. For every scam type situation that happens here, there are probably several positive touches happening that we don't even know about. I have tried to "pay it forward" and touch others as I have been touched.

YES!!! It wasn't here on the Disboards but on a teacher chatboard. When I was new in the teaching field at a Catholic School (interpret as VERY POOR!), I mentioned to a New Orleans teacher that I was going to do a lesson on Mardi Gras. Unfortunately, I have never been to N.O. and didn't know much about Mardi Gras but it fit the lesson I was trying to accomplish. She taught me so much! How to make King Cakes and why. She sent me a HUGE box of "throws". She said her student's parents are happy to get rid of them because they get so many. She told me about the parades and the crewes. Needless to say, I had a FANTASTIC lesson and she sent me "throws" every year after that until I left the classroom!!!

Also, I made a terrific friend online that I have only met once in person (but will see again at Christmas :cheer2: ) We have exchanged gifts and cards and call each other all the time.

Now, I work with technology as a career. I tend to be pretty skeptical of many things on the Internet but there is so much good that can come of an online community. Just as in the "real" community, I try not to let a few bad eggs ruin my opinion of all. In all aspects of my life, I tend to try to believe that humans are basically good intentioned folk.

Thanks for starting this thread so everyone can see the good that goes with the bad. I hope this thread grows to at least twice the size of the "scammer" thread!
