Has anyone done Disney on a knee scooter after foot surgery?

A lady I go to church with ahs used one for months because of many surgeries she has had on her foot. She said she loves it and it is great for getting around, but she said that if she go's to the mall or if she where going to Disney she would use her wheelchair because it makes her lower back start to hurt after using it for a long while.

LOVE the sign!

I just stay and wait. When were there a few weeks ago, I really didn't even have a choice! There was no way I could have moved in the crowd.

As long as you don't have one of those big canopys (and very few people do) your biggest problem will be other people blocking your view. You think with the fireworks in the sky it wouldn't be a problem but when someone stands directly in front of you all you can see is their backside! I tried to strategically park myself behind a trash can-- with my family between me and the trash. Would have been great if someone hadn't decided to let their child stand on the can for the fireworks. I couldn't see the castle at all and any of the fireworks directly around the castle, only the ones high up and to the sides. :headache: Also check for trees when you find a spot.

OP, I am having the same dilemma. I broke my ankle the end of August and will have my cast removed next week. Just this week I was allowed to put weight on it. We are leaving on 10/23 for WDW and staying in a 1br at BWVs but I know that I will not be strong enough to walk the parks as much as I want so I have decided to rent an ECV from Apple Scooter. The price is right and includes insurance. We will also be attending MNSSHP on 10/24. I am very independent as well and have fears about running into people but I have been reading these threads and know I can do it. Maybe we'll see you there!

Yes, I may see you there! We haven't booked and ECV yet, but plan on it this week. I see my surgeon again Wednesday and want to figure out what limitations on rides (if any) he will give me. I still have to use crutches and as long as I only put only a little weight on my heel, I'm going well. I'm hoping to be off crutches by then but I keep getting that shocking pain if I try to put more weight on my foot. I should be starting physical therapy soon so I'm hoping that helps out a lot.

We went ahead and ordered a scooter for me from Apple Scooters today. I saw my surgeon last night and he said I can ride any ride I want as long as I'm in the boot with the air blown up all around my foot. I may have to have it for up to 6 months since he said that my entire "fat pad" was removed and it's skin and bones/joints until my tissue is able to regrow. No wonder it has been hurting so bad! I'm relieved to know I'll be able to get to where I want to go in the parks without having to clunk around in the boot everywhere. I finally went out without crutches today and didn't even make it through half of Wal Mart before I got worn out. Thanks to everyone for their advice and information on Apple.

Thanks for the update. I had my cast removed yesterday and have a brace (velcro) that I must use when I am walking (with a cane). My dr. said I must use a scooter and I will be making my reservation within a few days. My problem is we will be arriving at MCO around 3 p.m. on Sat. so I figure we will get to BWVs around 4:30-5:00 and we have ADRs at Cape May Cafe at 6:30. I would really like to be there when they deliver the scooter because I would like some instruction. We are also having our OL as well as groceries delivered so as you can see we have a tight timeframe. I must sit down and finalize my plans soon!

Sounds like you are having a real time of it and I am sorry you are in so much pain. What type of scooter did you order? I will tell you that I am really skeptical about taking the bus. I would really like to go to MNSSHP and use my scooter (10/24) but that would mean I would have to take the bus back. I might just get a wheelchair for the MNSSHP (my family wants me to do this so I can stay longer at the party and they have volunteered to push me). Decisions, decisions.

Here's hoping we have great weather and smaller crowds! Have a great vacation!!:)

We get in late Friday night so we're having the scooter delivered on Saturday. I'll be able to get around in my boot and will have my crutches in case I get tired walking in the resort Friday. We'll pretty much check in and go to the room since it will be around 10:30-11:00. I'm hoping with having a week's worth of weight bearing on my heel by then, I will strengthen my leg (which really wasted a lot of muscle in a month of no weight bearing)and give me a little more endurance than what I have now. It's like walking in a full heavy ski boot and I'm sure in the Florida heat will be rather sweaty. The earliest they can deliver the scooter on Saturday is 8AM so we asked for that drop off time. He explained on the phone how to take it apart and will show us in person too. He said it's completely waterproof and to worry more about myself getting wet. I am going to bring a big poncho that can fit over me and the handles. Right now we are planning to use the rental car to get to each park. I'm going to call DVC and see if there's any openings at BLT yet and switch from Animal Kingdom Villas. If we can get in BLT, that would enable me to go to Epcot on the monorail or use the walkway to MK. Either way, we are set and won't need to use the buses.

I ordered the 3 wheel scooter. He suggested the 4 wheel because it has something I can elevate my leg on, but it had a wider turning radius and I wanted the easiest to turn. I'm still a bit nervous about driving it but I'm really glad I won't have to struggle trying to keep up. My foot was killing me last night just from going to WalMart. I can only imagine what it would feel like after walking all day in a park!

wow...really nice post ..i really like it while reading ...thanks for sharing with us

A couple of things I wanted to clear up.

WDW does have a length of stay option for whellchaors and strollers. You basically pay in advance for a certain number of days and get a voucher for each day. When you get to the park, you get in a special line for people who have prepaid and it is a much quicker process than when you wait in line for each person to pay.

Length of stay is not available for ECVs. They tried it for a very short time, but had to discontinue because they could not guarantee availability. Since they had no idea which park the person was planning to go to each day, there was no way to make the supply fit the demand.
