We donated my DH's '98 Dodge Neon to Melwood 3.5 years ago. They picked it up. They service adults with mental and developmental disabilities in the DC area. They auction the cars. You automatically can claim $500 or wait for the auction to occur. The car had 130,000 miles on it but was in excellent shape. They auctioned it for $750 so that's what we got to deduct. BTW, the resale value was just about $750 so we did better doing that than we ever would have trading it in or trying to sell it ourselves. Plus we got to help. We donate a lot of things. I never have yard sales, we always give stuff away. We also donated a refrigerator (6 yrs old and in great shape) to Habitat for Humanity for their resale store. They rarely take refrigerators, but ours was new enough and working well. People try to donate 20+ year old ones so they are careful about that.
