Years ago I was this on a Martha Steward show...it looked so pretty and you could match any color you wanted...I have several old shades and need to replace some of them and thought this would be neat to do...but worry about a fire hazzard. Anythoughts?

I have seen this done on some of the HGTV shows and it does look really nice, I have thought about fire hazards too. One thing I thought of was, if you are covering an existing shade, and the ribbon is on the outside of it, it would probably be OK.

I was thinking about this after I posted and did a search on HGTV for ribbon lamshades and all the projects there showed them covering a plain white lampshade with ribbons or fabrics.

I have done this. What did you need to know?

they way Martha did it she removed the shade covering and just used the frame. I wasn't sure if this was a concern for fires. Whether I should do it with a lamp that isn't used much.

I covered over top of the fabric it was a large shade. I use the lamp all the time and have never had a problem. If the shade is clost to the bulb I would maybe think again but the typical shade should be fine. good luck and have fun. I really like the one I made.

Thanks! I think I will give it a try....maybe start with my bedroom lamp.
Now anyone know where i can find beads on a string that I can glue to the bottom of a shade?
Pottery barn has a great shade but it is close to $50 for simple shade but has beads on the bottom. I bought a $14.99 one and want to add this touch....any ideas where to shop! I think I am going to try to go to Joannes later

I have seen bead fringe at my local crafts store not sure of the price but it was in the ribbon section - sold by the inch.

Spinning there is a great ribbon outlet store in Hagerstown (pretty close to you?) I believe it is Offeray. Let me check with my friend at pre school tomorrow they may have stuff like there for cheap.

Haggerstown is a bit of a hike! We do pass throught there on my way to West Virginia!
But I found the perfect beaded trim at Joanne's it was a little more money than I thought but still so much cheaper than buying a shade with it already on it! And I love the look! I got my trusty hot glue out and glued it on in less than 5 min.! It really adds a nice touch! Now I want to do it the other shade....
