My sister wants us to go to Prague next year for her 50th birthday..I love the idea but I don't know much about Prague..Has anyone been there? Any advice?

Some friends of mine went about 12 years ago and really loved it there. They went to Prague, Croatia, and Bulgaria. I just remember they loved looking at all the very old historic buildings and really thought it was beautiful in Prague. It was the favorite part of thier trip. Sorry I don't know details.

My BIL/SIL were there a few years ago and loved it. They said it is a beautiful city with wonderful architecture. They are both architects so they tend to vacation places with pretty buildings and don't do much else though.

I went in the 90's when we lived in Germany. Took a daytrip there to shop for crystal etc. Everything was so inexpensive at that time. I wish I took more pictures, but I did not.

I'm hopefully going in Summer '08. I have a few friends that have been and they tell me it's gorgeous- like a city from a fairy tale, the people are friendly, it's fairly easy to get around, and quite inexpensive compared to other popular European destinations.

Oh and I believe the Travel Channel's Passport to Europe is repeating the Prague episode next week.

My DH travels very frequently for business and has been six of the seven continents. Of all the cities he has seen and there are many exotic places on the list, Prague is one of his favorites. He can't wait until we can all go there for a vacation instead of his usual business trip. Tell your DS to go and enjoy!

I haven't but my parents just returned. They loved it!

I haven't, but a close friend lived there during his junior and senior years of high school and has very fond memories of the city--and the beer. :thumbsup2

If you've got any specific questions, let me know and I'll run them buy him.

It is my favorite city in the world.
Here is a great website with info:

English is spoken by lots and lots of people in Prague (by the way the 'g' is silent- it is "Prah", or something close to that)

I travel for business extensively also (and I am excited to report that as of last month, I have now been to all 7 continents!!!). I agree with the above, Prague is a wonderful city - I was just there in October and highly recommend it. Hotels are expensive, so don't be surprised by that. I also found availability challenging in terms of hotels, so I wouldn't book last minute. Outside of accomodation, I found everything else to be inexpensive and good value so it evened out.

Some of the things I liked most about Prague were the architecture, the emphasis on music, the beautiful walks, and the fun restaurants experiences. I really enjoyed spending time walking around Prague, and didn't value visiting the landmarks as much as in other European cities (although I certainly did see them). We attended all sorts of musical and theatre performances and they were all great.

I would suggest checking out some more specific travel boards - I found good info for Prague on the Fodors forums. Additionally, I would recommend just going to the bookstore and flipping through guidebooks, but if you buy one, I would recommend AGAINST the Rick Steves Prague and Czech Republic book. I thought it really missed the mark and couldn't rely on it.
