Hi All

Until this morning I was quite excited as we are off to Bulgaria tomorrow afternoon.

We have our house up for sale and its gone under offer so we have started to look around for another.......so today we went to see a property.

After having a look round (and not liking it!!) the lady owner asked if we were intrested, DH trying to be subtle explained we had just started looking but we were going on holiday tomorrow so would probably not get back in touch with the \estate Agents until we return.

The lady asked where we were going when we told her Bulgaria she just said 'Oh my god you are not taking children to that country are you??....and subsquently told us it was her holiday from hell last year!!. She even mentioned she is at the same resort (Sunny Beach) now she was not the friendliest of people but now I am really jittery and my teenage son is asking if he can stay with his Grandma!!!!! :guilty:

Has anone been or know anyone who has been??

Bulgaria is a country we are considering for our holiday next year. Obviously, I can't give you my opinion of the country as I have yet to go, but from friends and relations who have been, they have told me its a wonderful place. Beaches on the Black Sea coast, beautiful mountains, plenty of histical buildings, and very inexpensive.

Remember, where ever you go there is always going to be somebody who's had a bad experience there. I have friends who have been to Florida once, their experience was horrendous and they would never go again. They always look in horror when we say we are going.

I've just been to Romania - I know its not the same country, but they're both joining the EU next year so should have some similarities.

I was going on business os had no choice - check out Tripadvisor.com and ask any questions you want (it works the same as Dis). Despite all the "I was drugged and robbed when a nice girl bought me a drink" (der!!!) I found it really friendly and am now planning a holiday.

We went to Bulgaria around 18 years ago. Very different to what it is now I believe. I have a customer who has just bought a house over there, they have twin girls aged about 10 and they love it. I also have neighbours who have just put their house up for sale to move over there.
When we went Pint of beer cost 5p, money was illegally exchanged with waiters and goods were bought on the black market.
There were 6 of us, one evening we took 2 taxis to a hotel in the mountains, we were told served best food around, We ate like kings, champagne (local), chefs came out of kitchens to see who was dining they thought we were film stars spending so much. We gave tips to waiters and2 taxis back to resort whole evening cost £12. £2/head
My brother won £100 in the casino he had to wait 2 hours until they could get the money together to pay him. The best houses with ocean veiw cost around £2,000.
Like I say I think things have changed now. I would not hesitate going and giving it another go. Let us know when you return what you thought of it.

My parents went there in 1984 and the only thing I remember them saying was that they loved it there and they had some very cheap eye tests and glasses :confused3

We went skiing there a few years ago during half term. It was much cheaper than other skiing resorts at half term and you get what you pay for. We stayed in a four star hotel but it would not be classed one star in this country!

It is very cheap but not up to the standards we are used to especially if you are used to going to Disneyworld.

I am sure you will have a great time if you just want a nice beach holiday, just don't expect any luxury.

Have a great time and let us know how you got on when you get back.

I think anywhere on holiday is better than being at work anyway!

I've not been myself but my friend Nadia's mum and dad come from there so she has been several times and I've seen pictures - it looks gorgeous. She had no complaints about it at all, last time she visited I think was around 5 years ago? Don't worry - some people's hellish holidays are other people's dream holidays!

My mum and dad went in June and hated it, but and a big but my mum and dad are quite hard to please. They found it very seedy with prostatutes and pimps everywhere at night. There was not enough for them to do. However, my mum and dad are very prude and think my children were conceived with a sneeze :lmao: I love my parents but sometimes there tastes are beyond me.

Just ignore all the negative comments and enjoy yourself. As said peoples nightmares could be someones dream holiday. Dont expect luxury like you would in Orlando. I am sure you will be fine.

It has lovely beaches and there's no doubt it is an up and coming holiday destination, but I don't think there's much tourist intrastructure as yet, so you may be confined to your hotel and the beach.

I assume when you say Bulgaria you're specifically referring to the Black Sea resorts (or will you be visiting elsewhere?). Tourist facilities are still catching up in some places, but we were in Sofia, Plovdiv (second largest city and cultural center for the country) and Koprivstica (heritage village located in the mountains) last summer and really enjoyed it. As others have said, it's still very cheap and the history is interesting. Don't know if you're planning on hiring a car, but the national coach system has been much improved over the last couple years. Unfortunately, three trips (1981, 1995, 2005) and we still haven't made it to the Black Sea!! Let me know if you have specific questions.
