"The naming of cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES."
T.S. Elliot, The Naming of Cats, from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.
I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist -- it is one of my favorite poems!
It is actually easy to change the name of a cat or dog. Name, treat. Name, treat. Name, dinner! They catch on really quickly even when quite senior.
If you read the poem you will know that a cat doesn't care what humans call him of her. Their real name is secret and ineffable, effable, effanineffable, deep, inscrutable and singular!

(He's in my signature...isn't he cute?)

<feigning insult on Kitty's behalf.>
, like the Audrey Hepburn movie. Also the Harrison Ford remake.
Calling out every name I could think of, that I actually liked. No way was she going to be called a name that I hated.
She reacted pretty much the same way to all the names. "I hope you aren't talking to me, because that's not my name."
I figured out her name!
In all the years since, she has NEVER not responded to that name. That's her name. And I don't have to hold cat food out to her to prove it.
