This is a guess, but I'd say 3 - each house has to play each other house. I don't recall there being playoffs - the champion house was based on points accumulated over trhe year in the 3 matches played.

You're right - I was only thinking of how many Gryffindor had to play, not how many were played in total! I guess I only ever really thought about the Gryffindor ones - they are the ones that Harry played in, so they got the most coverage in the books.
