I promised my almost 8 year old son a Harry Potter costume when we go to Universal in February.

Will I be able to buy one in the park? And what will the price be?

I sort of promised him to go all the way with costume and wand. So I guess that I need to bring my big wallet :)

Thanks

I'm not sure of the robe prices in the park but I can imagine they would be expensive. Why not buy a cheaper costume at Party City before you go. Surprise your son with it when you get to the hotel. He probably won't care where it comes from. Then you can let him pick out his wand at the park. It might save you a little money.

The robes are $109.95 on the Universal Orlando website. I don't know what they sell for in the stores at the park. I bought one in the Universal shop at the Orlando airport several years ago.

Not sure what else you and he have in mind as a "costume." Sweater? Tie?

I agree with PP about buying stuff elsewhere.

There's a website called Whimsic Alley which sells Harry Potter clothing. At least I think they still do. Warner Bros sued them.

Alivans is another big website for Harry Potter wands and clothing. Their wands are nicer than what you will find at the park.

Yes, you can buy them in the park -- either at the shop in CityWalk or in the Harry Potter section of IoA. Same prices as buying online..

I'm going to respectfully disagree with the PP and say it depends how much of a fan he is. If he just liked a couple of the movies I'd say go cheap. If he sees the books as magic texts and practices his spells regularly (like my little Hermione and my friend's sons) I'd go with the real deal because the quality is so much better and it will hold up to many hours of wearing. Or at least don't buy the Halloween costume type, which usually doesn't have the hood. The cheap alternative is to make the robe and buy the crests on ebay or the US site. I would buy the official tie and the robe but the other stuff. I made my DDs scarf and ended up making 2 more for my friends sons because they looked more like the scarves in the movie than the official ones, and they look more authentic without the crest. My DD doesn't wear her robe anymore but she still wears the scarf and she keeps her wand handy.

As far as buying the wand, since my DD really only wanted to be Hermione we skipped the wand choosing section and went right to the store. I'd suggest that if your son would be disappointed if he got a wand from a character he didn't really like.

The robes are really terrific. Scary price but good quality.

That and a wand are my sons costume. No need for other clothes because by the end of the movies series they are all in street clothes under robes anyway. But they do sell ties if he wants one!

If he likes a particular character like Ron or Harry they have their owls and even scabbers. :). Well they have an owl that works for DS's Ron outfit; not sure if its Pigwidgion (spelling?) or whatnot.

A little note...the robes are hot! Carry a backpack if his body can't handle the robe the whole day. And note that the wands are resin and are breakable especially if they fall.

Good points! My DD actually didn't take her robe on the trip, and her wand stayed in its box and went in the locker. But she did wear her quidditch shirt in the parks.
