Anybody going to see Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone?

What do you predict it will do box office wise?

I say that it will have a huge opening weekend but will bomb after that. My reasons?

1) The movie is 2 hours 40 minutes long. I don't care if its Harry Potter! NO KID WILL SIT THERE FOR 2 HOURS 40 MINUTES EACH AND EVERY WEEKEND TO SEE A MOVIE!

2) Too many people are protesting it! Either the Catholic Community or the people upset that Coca-Cola is promoting the film as well as promoting junk food for kids. Yeah...the drink is really going to go to their hips!

3) WB is promoting this way too much. They take a big risk with this b/c if the people are impressed, it will shrink box office wise quickly.

4) IT'S A KID'S FILM!!! There are many people who think that it will do better then Titanic! THEY ARE NUTS!! A kid's film has not done that good since THE LION KING back in 1994. The movie would have to be really good to surpass Titanic.

5) Anticipation ..... SO WHAT! Pearl Harbor was highly anticipated too but well under-performed at the box office barely grossing $200 million.

6) BIG WEEKEND .... (again) SO WHAT! So it has a big weekend. It doesn't mean it will do extremly well. Jurassic Park 3 had a HUGE opening weekend of $80 million but sank quickly. Titanic itself only grossed $28 million its opening weekend but was able to hold on for weeks and months after that to be the highest grossing film of all time.

I exspect the film to gross no more then $200-250 million dollars by the end of its run! Don't have too high of expectations for the film. Look at the facts first.

Well, in my opinion, people are going to see movies they want to see- and JMO, but I think *a lot* of people want to see this movie even if it is long, it is protested, too hyped WHATEVER! And by the way those books sold, and how many people are raving about vs. the number of people protesting them, I'd say Harry Potter will definitely be a successful movie.

Oh, BTW, I have advanced tickets for Harry Potter this Friday. It'd be too bad if I didn't get them when I did.... it's sold out now. But I could always go to a later show right? Oh wait! I couldn't- they're sold out too!! :)

1. From what I've heard, the movie goes very quickly. People have said that its 'the quickest two hours and a half they've ever sat through'. All the Star Wars movies were pretty long too weren't they?

2. I don't think enough people are boycotting the movie to make a significant dent in box office takings. Groups were boycotting Disney when the Lion King came out.

3. Is there such a thing as too much promotion? I think it just adds more hype to the movie.

4. Although it is a kid's film, I think it has universal appeal. How many articles have you seen in the newspapers about it the last few weeks? I don't think these were aimed at kids. I don't think all the recent comparisons to Tolkien will hurt it either.

5. Pearl Harbour got terrible reviews though. The few I've read of Harry Potter are very good. People were anticipating the Harry Potter movie before they'd even started making it. I can't say the same about Pearl Harbour.

6. I think it will have a big weekend, but I'm sure it will have a lot of repeat value, and won't fizzle out and die.

I have my tickets for Friday too!!:D

I think this is going to be one of the biggest grossing films ever, but I think it would be cool to come back to this thread in a month. :)

I still say they are making way too big of a deal out of this movie which looks sooo stupid!

it dosent look stupid moose. im goin tomorrow with my friend cuz my dads a director and he gets tickets. I think it looks great, exactly like what you see in your head when your reading the book!

I'm think the movie will be a big hit. You're letting your emotions influence your reality. Harry Potter has already sold 3 million dollars in advance tickets. The only movie to even come close is Star Wars the Phantom Menace and HP quadrupled it's previous record. Plus the record 9.6 million it made in England during sneak previews.
If your prediction's right then HP would still be one of the top 15 movies of ALL TIME!! Hardly a failure! And BtW Pearl harbor is number 38 on the top 240 movies! So it was anticipated AND succesful! Anticipation counts for something!
I already bought my ticket and my friend and I are going to the midnight showing!!

PS. Jurassic Park 3 is #58

READ MY POST ABOUT IT!! ITS AWESOME!!! sorry, it was great (pg movie or not), no argument there. and if you think its a KIDS MOVIE, think again, it was intense at the end, even for me:D

I guess I did let my emotions get away with me... I still think that Harry Potter is a fad.

This doesn't mean that the movie won't do extremly well.....noooo, not at all.

In fact the movie Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone made $30 million in its opening day which is extremly good even doing better then Star Wars Episode I.

I will be seeing the movie on Tuesday (after the rush of opening weekend) and give my opinion then.

ok well I think it will do good!!

lots of kids love harry potter...i wa sliek im not going to read the books(and also i dont have time) but now im going to! i think the movie is gonan be good...i think it will do well too!

even all my friends are talking about going to see it!

I'm going to see it Tuesday just to see what all the hype is about. I usually am the one who doesn't seem to see the coolest movie of the year.

Everybody was talking about Shrek but I didn't get to see it till it came out on DVD.
