Harry Potter Book 7 *SPOILERS*

I have to agree. I was quite surprised by the line. Not because of the swearing, but because it seemed very out of character for Mrs Weasly and also very muggle - so not only out of character for Mrs Weasly, but really for the whole wizarding world basically. I felt the same way about Ron "effing" everything....where did that come from? Again very "our" world, not theirs.

I think this is another example of the books becoming darker and more "adult" in tone as they go along. I seem to remember Ron saying "bloody he!!" in Book 1, for goodness sake! As the characters have aged, their speech has naturally matured (if cursing can be considered mature, lol) along with them.

Molly's exclamation was AWESOME to me- very Mama Bear "Don't you dare mess with my kid" and it fit with the stress and danger of the situation.

That would be fun! I was also thinking of a Hogwarts Yearbook of sorts, with drawings of each person we know from the books, and what they went on to do.

Kind of like the endings to the Suikoden series of games. At the end of each game, it scrolls for each of the 108 stars and says what they are currently up to. Some get really funny, but I love seeing what happened to all the characters you come and love through the game!

I would like this... I really would hehe.

I have a question about something, sorry if someone else has mentioned it but this thread is quite large already.

How is it that Neville ended up with the sword? Last I remember Griphook ran off with it at the bank. I couldn't figure out how it got back into their possession. Did I miss something?

Voldemort's soul had been so weakened by his continuous creation of Horcruxes that when he fled the scene of the Potters murders, a fragment attatched itself to the only living thing in the room, the infant Harry Potter.

I've always wondered this...and now even more...

How exactly did Voldemore "flee" after killing Harry's parents...wasn't he basically nothing? How did he escape the Potter house and get to Albania with his wand?

Before reading book 7, I always assumed someone was at the house with Voldemort who stole him and his wand away, but it doesn't seem like there was now.

I was disappointed to that there wasn't more about Petunia and Dudley...I liked the scene with Dudley, but really thought there would be more about Petunia or we would find out a secret she had.
There seemed to be a "build-up" about that in previous books that never materialized. :confused3
I felt the same way until the chapter about Snape's memories. I really liked the glimpses of the young Evans sisters and how close they once were.

To me, the secret she had seemed to be the fact that far from thinking Lily's magical abilities were horrible or freakish, she was envious. She even went so far as to write to Dumbledore and ask him to allow her to come to Hogwarts, too. He didn't allow it, of course, and it seems that that was the moment she decided that Lily was a "freak" and was never close to her again. Very sad, really, and I think Petunia regretted it, but just couldn't bring herself to say anything to Harry about it when they parted for the final time.

What I would really like to know now is who got the reprieve. JK Rowling said that originally someone was supposed to die, but got a reprieve and two others died instead of that person. I naturally thought the two that died instead were Tonks and Lupin :sad1: but that really doesn't make sense since there wasn't anything about their deaths, just that they died in the battle...it seems like if they died to give the reprieve we'd know more about their death.
Unless, maybe JK Rowling reprieved one of the trio and thought she needed to add more known characters to the death toll to make the battle believeable or to give Harry his resolution to seek out Voldemort so he could kill him.

I think Petunia's "secret" was that she begged Hogwarts to let her go, too. I really wish we'd gotten something about what ended up happening to the Dursleys.

I agree that Tonks & Lupin were the ones killed that she didn't plan on, just because they seem to have been thrown onto the body count with no reason. As for the reprive, I'm guessing either George or Hagrid. It seems like Hagrid should have died several times.

I think that both Lupin & Tonks ending up dead is the thing that frustrates me most about the book. Lupin's death kind of takes back his making the choice earlier on to not go with Harry, but instead be there for his son.

Before reading book 7, I always assumed someone was at the house with Voldemort who stole him and his wand away, but it doesn't seem like there was now.

Didn't Voldemort say something about Wormtail keeping his wand safe for him or something like that in book 4? I could very well be wrong about that, but it seems to stick in my mind that Pettigrew had the wand.

As for escaping the Potter house, since he had no body, he would have been pure spirit (kind of like he was at the end of book 1, after leaving Quirrel's body) and just sort of floated away. How he ended up in Albania, I don't know.

I think either Percy or Draco got the reprieve.

In rereading the book, in chapter 11, Harry says to Lupin "If the new regime thinks Muggle-borns are bad, what will they do to a half-werewolf whose father's in the Order? My father died trying to protect my mother & me, and you reckon he'd tell you to abandon your kid to go on an adventure with us?" Then he procedes to call Lupin a coward.

Harry says to Ron & Hermione "Parents shouldn't leave their kids unless-unless they've got to".

Later on, Lupin says on the radio to Harry to "follow his instincts which are good & nearly always right."

It was like Harry was predicting that Lupin & Tonks (going by the use of Plural "Parents") would die for their cause instead of letting their child grow up with wondering "what will they do to a half-werewolf..."

Just like Harry did in COS, he pulled it from the sorting hat proving he was a true Griffindor.

Just joining in here!
I LOVED the book! In my opinion its the best of the series. Snape has been my favorite character since I started reading the series and I had a feeling that he was going to die in this book. The chapter with his memories made me cry, but in a good way. I was just so happy that his true loyalties were revealed and that Harry was made aware exactly how good of a man he really was. However, I didn't expect the twist of Snape being in love with Lily. I think it added so much more depth to his character.
I also enjoyed learning about The Deathly Hallows and more about Dumbledore and his past. Oh, and the Ron & Hermione kiss was great too!
Of course all of the deaths upset me but Hedwig's was really shocking! I love animals so that might have made it more traumatic for me. I really didn't expect both Tonks & Lupin to die. Lupin maybe, but Tonks?! Made me sad for the baby. :sad1:
Anyway, thats my two cents. I'm so glad to have this thread! None of my friends have finished reading the book yet!!

Just finished. LOVED the book. As always, JKR manages to throw in another twist when you think you have everyone figured out... esp with Dumbledore. LOVED Snape's vindication.

I agree the epilogue seemed disjointed - not quite fitting with the rest of the book. But I'm happy about the things that are in it.

Also saw OOTP today - so it's been all Harry, all day. Can't wait for TDH to be made into a movie - if a studio could make "Return of the King" almost 3 and a half hours, I think Warner Bros. would be willing to do the same for the last HP movie.

Finished an hour ago, and then came here to read the thread. Love the Dis!
Loved the book, but I REALLY wanted Umbrage to get it in the end (almost as much as Bellatrix).
Cried over Dobby, Fred, the first time they heard "Potterwatch" on the radio, the notes left for Harry in Godric's Hollow, and when Neville came through the tunnel--bruised and battered but jubilant.
Laughed at Hermione beating up Ron when he returns, the timing of Hermione and Ron's kiss, Mrs. Weasley's infamous comment, and the escape from Gringott's.
I think the Dumbledore 'trick' of Harry going willingly to death was brilliant (even though I figured it out before he "died";) ).
Happy for Snape's vindication--one of the most well drawn characters in the book.
Still not sure about the epilogue--I didn't think it was necessary, but I appreciate the full circle nature of the story.
So sad it's over-- guess I'll go to bed now.

I think I just found a clue as to where Hermione & Ron came up with their kids names

Rose for their daughter:
When they snuck into the MOM looking for Umbridge & the locket, their were people creating pamphlets "MUDBLOODS & the Dangers They Pose to a Peaceful Pure-Blood Society".

"Beneath the title was a picture of a red rose with simpering face in the middle of its petals, being strangled by a green weed with fangs & a scowl".

As far as Hugo for their son:
The name means bright in mind & spirit. Hermiones & Rons qualities...also, Hugo is the name of an award given to the best science fiction or fantasy works...also the acronym for Human Genome Organization which the international organisation of scientists involved in human genetics.... Good play on a name for a boy in this series!

I'd been wondering where the name Hugo came from! All of the other names seemed to fit (I figured Rose was just to go with Lily), but Hugo seemed a bit out of nowhere.

Enjoyed the book, especially the redemption of Snape and Neville striking the next-to-final blow by killing the snake, but the epilogue was too pat.

I don't have a problem with the cussing. I've seen "Aliens."

Wow. Just wow. This is the best book, very different. I knew they HAD to return to Hogwarts (and no, I didn't even read the chapter titles) to finish things off. The last 100 pages were a roller coaster ride, weren't they?

Ramblings, in no particular order:

Mad Eye, the toughest Auror of all, dead in the first 100 pages? That shocked me and the loss of Hedwig was unexpected. The loss of Moody just set me up for despair and anxiousness-it was palpable what they all felt, just in the loss of that one character.

I caught one error the first time around, when they were at Xeno Lovegoods, he comments "Luna is out in the garden getting things for our dinner" How would she know they were there, and why isn't she there to see the friends she so adores? That one line there told me something was up...

Someone started a thread last week that asked what you thought would happen. I posted my deaths, one of the Weasley twins and Snape. I really thought that losing one twin was far worse than losing both and somehow, I knew Snape HAD to die. I thought he'd die defending Harry and be shown to be good. Not exactly right how it played out. I was confused about the thoughts until Harry was trying to rush up to Dumbledore's office. Well done.

The whole book confused me on the thought of Neville-where the heck WAS he? In the end, what the sorting hat saw in the 11 year old boy came shining through. Loyal, dedicated AND brave. :teeth:

As soon as Tonks came to Hogwarts, I knew Teddy's fate. :( If she hadn't come, I would have really been surprised.

I also wondered when they arrived at Grimmauld place, why they hadn't covered Nigellus's portrait? Nice touch with Kreacher, and gosh, I felt sad for Kreacher that he finally felt respected by his masters and lost them after the Ministry fiasco.

Dobby! That really made me cry. He truly was a noble elf.

So many times, it seemed like they were in an impossible situation and the three of them combined got them out alive. At Malfoy Manor, Gringotts, the Room of Requirement fire...

Okay, so I must have missed it in the sleep deprivation, who used magic for the first time late in life?

Mrs. Weasley vs. Bellatrix. OMG, I'm still crying from what happened at King's Cross with Dumbledores' parting words and that had me snorting (have to watch my emotions as DH is sitting next to me, running about 100 pages behind) He saw me crying over the previous half hour and then for me to laugh would give things away.

Interesting that the symbol was misinterpreted at Durmstrang from what it truly was...

I think I'll start rereading tomorrow. I loved it.

Yea I didn't notice who did magic late in life either. I was waiting for filch or mrs.figg to show up and help. But no. Unless I acidently missed it.

Also in another thred around here. Someone mention that J.K went to Dan's dressing room on the set and said to hold on to a prop for the last movie. And I posted It would be The sword of Gryffindor. I belive I was right. But I guessed wrong on the reason they needed it. I said Harry would use it to actually kill voldemoert not distroy horcruxes.

My Australian version doesn't have a page 705! What happened on that page???? I finished the book last night - it went on sale at 9.01am here in Australia - it's soooo nice to be able to read other people's opinions on here - I'm not ALLOWED to utter a word in our house...

Nakies. Yay!
