What? No comments on Clarkson’s column in the Sun? Thought the anti-Meghan crowd would be all over that.

(The British TV personality Jeremy Clarkson published his Sunday column in the Sun tabloid, imagining Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, stripped naked and publicly humiliated before jeering crowds of BriBritons.
I saw it, but didnt bring it up here as it was developing quite quickly and...

It is still a column by a comedian, where the purpose can be to shock. Was it in bad taste, yeah for sure. But when it comes to celebrities, politicians and known figures, things like this are said by comedians in columns, stand up routines and newspaper cartoons.

Did Clarkson go too far? Perhaps.
Should 60 MPs ask questions about it and should this become such a big thing? Not in my opinion.

It's Clarkson. Jimmy Carr could have said it as well. Comedy is about looking for the borders of society. Sometimes you cross the line too far and then you know where society stands.

If a politician had said this, then it would have been completely different.

No, it was the jester.

I didn't read It. Is this where he compared Markle to Cersei in GOT?

Saying at night you can't sleep as you lay there grinding your teeth and dreaming of the day she is paraded naked through the streets with people shouting at her isn't okay. Saying everyone his age thinks the same way isn't okay. Basically, saying he hated her more than a known serial killer because he hates her on a cellular level isn't okay. It's creepy and weird. His own daughter spoke out against it. More complaints were received about this one article than the total number of complaints received all of last year.

I believe the offending article was removed. It was a take off from Game of Thrones. That show isn't all roses and puppies so no big surprise.
Anyway, back to real life, it's a nice time of year. I'm focusing on the upcoming weekend. Happy Holidays!

Yes, it was removed and it was taken from there. The surprise is going there in the first place. Something is not okay with that guy.

If this thread wasn't about H&M the responses would be different. It should be okay to say "that's gross", "that's inappropriate" "that went too far" etc even if you don't like person the comments are about. Shrugging it off was not really what I expected from people TBH.

To me there is a big difference in context.

No, I didn't agree with Clarkson's words, and I can see why people have a problem with it. Why I 'shrug it off' is of who says it and where. To me it was clear that it was said by a comedian as a bad joke in a column. And that it was not meant as a serious threat.

I don't think it has anything to do with H&M, I have seen comments like this about politicians for example. Saying they should be punished for their political views, or singers/actors for giving a bad performance. (I say punished to keep it somewhat family friendly, insert form of punishment yourself).

Comedy is a great thing, it holds up a mirror to society. Like with all free speech, there are limits to it.

Of course it was clear. But you me and everyone still have the capability of saying "oof that was just too much". I watch a lot of comedy specials over time (ironic to the topic but Netflix has a lot of those) but I still say "oof that was just too much" because sometimes comments made are still comments that shouldn't be made. A lot of bad behaviors in the past I might add were made under "it's just a joke".
I don't think it has anything to do with H&M,
I think you misunderstood that comment I made. If this thread was about a random woman people would not be nonchalant saying "oh well you know it's just a GOT reference NBD". To put it more broadly people have a habit of letting things slide if they don't like the person when sometimes that really shouldn't be the case.
Like with all free speech, there are limits to it.
Please don't even bring that into it. Free speech is related to governmental action (and still comes with restrictions with respects to governmental action), not comments made by comedians as a rationale for a person not having an issue with it.

I think another thing to factor in is that not everyone is familiar with GOT. I am not. I have never seen It, don’t know the characters or plot, and am not familiar with any quotes. To a fan of the show, it might be obvious it was a joke. To someone like me, even knowing the person saying it is a comedian, it can be taken a lot more seriously since we aren’t in on the joke. I personally did not read it as a joke the first time I saw it, and even after being told that it was a joke, it doesn’t read as funny to me.

Whether or not it was meant maliciously or not, I feel it really crossed the line. It could be taken the wrong way by just one person who hates the target and then it becomes a serious threat. I feel this way regardless of whether Meghan is the target, or anyone else. There are no conditions under which what he said should be acceptable. There is enough hate in the world already. We should be encouraging kindness instead. I would think that would be especially clear to a person who has spent their career entertaining people. If the only way he can make a joke is to humiliate or wish harm on someone else, then perhaps he isn’t as clever as he thinks he is. I hope he takes a step back and thinks about what he said, and how it could be perceived, and uses it as a learning experience going forward.

While I wish Meghan and Harry were completely truthful with what they choose to share with the public, I don’t hate them or wish them ill in any way.

Although when you throw poo expect some to be thrown back at you. The Markles take it to the nth degree and ridiculing the Queen was way over the line. MM doesn't know when to stop.

My opinion is that these particular two royals have chosen to see and be seen with Hollywood celebrities. No surprise then there is great interest from the public in their lives. Whether that interest is healthy or unhealthy, is not for me to judge. What I see is that the H&M Netflix series, celebrity interviews they do, their podcasts, etc. invites scrutiny and commentary of all kinds that comes with the territory as they build their brand. All of it keeps their names in the public eye which seems to be their intention.

It seems they have no problem regurgitating "their" truth. They are totally fair game for any and all criticism they receive.

I've been following this thread for some time. I haven't watched the Netflix show and about a week ago quit even reading articles about H&M. It was their comments that implied the other people who have married in were chosen because they fit the look, not for love, that did it for me. If someone in my family said that I'd be deeply hurt.

The mud slinging has turned to poo flinging and I'm afraid it's going to get worse as the desire for the spotlight becomes harder to capture. I'm glad that article was called out, it crossed the line. I'm just tired of them at this point, even the gossip.

I hope they figure out a way to make it together that's actually positive.

Ouch... Politico.com does not like Meghan Markle. She got added to the list of narcissists of 2022. Next to Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Kanye West and some others. https://www.politico.com/news/magaz...-we-all-finally-got-over-narcissists-00075270

The writer, Joanna Weiss, speaks with John Harden, political science professor with a specialisation in narcissism in politics.

Excerpts:

Somewhere between the fifth and sixth hour of “Harry and Meghan,” the new Netflix documentary series produced by the former Duke and Duchess of Sussex and filmed at their California mansion — which suggests that there is no one more in love, no one more socially conscious, no one more aggrieved — my natural sympathy for the couple started turning to irritation, and it occurred to me that ego has its limits. And it struck me that the overreach that led to the Sussexes’ critically panned mega-series is the same impulse that turned Elon Musk into a terror on Twitter, that prompted Ye to up the ante of outrageous behavior until he crossed the line into blatant antisemitism, that sent Bankman-Fried from the top of the world to a Bahamian jail.

Their current Netflix series premiered to high ratings and an explosion of media thinkpieces (made you look!). Part of it is chilling: an up-close look at the British tabloid press, complete with heart-wrenching footage of Harry’s mother, Diana, hounded by paparazzi. But the legitimate complaints are wedged between glamour shots, from footage of Meghan getting fitted for ballgowns to a vast collection of flattering photos and videos they took during their royal exit, apparently preparing for a photogenic tell-all. Even sympathetic critics have groused that there’s little new here, beyond the vanity. In The Guardian, Marina Hyde compared the couple to “a pair of ancient mariners with a TV contract, condemned to tell their tale to everyone they meet.”

If the Sussexes’ addiction to the public eye is benign — they seem tiresome, but genuinely well-intentioned — a narcissist’s constant quest for eyeballs and acclaim can get a lot more dangerous. For the worst of it, see Ye, whose perennial need for attention has evolved from outbursts at awards shows to wearing “White Lives Matter” T-shirts and making antisemitic comments on podcasts, social media platforms and TV shows — losing, in the process, a lucrative Adidas contract and what was left of the public’s goodwill.

The comparison to The Ancient Mariner is interesting.

Finally, a "title" MM deserves!
