Harnesses for Kids

Well, I can break it down from my pov:

Picture 1: Bored kid with binky stuffed in his mouth is at the end of his rope (literally) while parents ignore him and chat with each other.

Picture 2: Kid is again at the end of his rope crawling towards gross stuff on floor. Mother is apparently not interested in stopping this behavior beyond watching him do it.

Picture 3: Mother who is apparently ablebodied (she's wearing running shoes) and unencumbered by bags or other items watched kid play in the water. Note the blue binky around his neck dragging on the ground. Why does this kid need a leash? Where's the crowd?

Picture 4: Kid walking on leash behind dad, mom, and the dog. Dead last and ignored.

Picture 5: Kid sitting on ground at the end of her leash, ignored. Parent is completely turned away from her. If the woman in the black shirt backs up she'll trip over the leash and the kid.

Picture 6: Kid walking behind parents, ignored. Notice how she's holding the leash, and how it would be so easy to be holding her hand, instead.

Picture 7: Twofer! They're training for the Iditarod.

Picture 8: Again with the kid walking behind the parent. No eye contact, no notice. Kid is at the end of his rope. And the whole thing about parents having more security-she's BARELY holding onto that strap.

Picture 9: This is the only one I think that the leash may be appropriate. Both parents are paying attention to a very young child who may have Down syndrome.

Picture 10: I have my dog on a leash so I don't have to worry about him while I have a chat. Me too, except it's my kid. Notice the other kids are ignoring the kid on the leash.

Picture 11: Both kids are walking behind the parent. No eye contact, no notice. Younger one is at the end of her leash and holding on, probably because the mom is walking too fast. But at least they match.

Picture 12: Son, you're just less important to me than whatever this thing is on the ground that all the other adults are staring at.

Picture 13: Yeah, he looks happy and included. Future unhappy ignored kids of america, unite!

Picture 14: How's that working for you?

Picture 15: He's practicing Ghandi's passive resistance. Well, it must be some sort of a teachable moment.

Picture 16: Worth a thousand words.

Sadly, these pictures sum up my general perception of leashes/harnesses and their users. My child absolutely was a "darter", so I was extra vigilant. She was never allowed to sit or crawl on a gross public floor like so many of the kids in the pictures. Either I (or my husband) held her, she stood up like a reasonable kid and held my hand, or she was secured in a stroller. If she wriggled out of holding my hand, she was picked up. If she pulled the "arms straight up in the air so mommy can't hold me" bit, I turned her sideways and held her horizontally, and then I marched out of wherever we were and went home. I never once thought about using a leash or harness - mainly because I don't think they solve problems; they just create new ones. People could trip over your child and injure them, and who knows what your kid could get into while you're not watching them? I don't know the answer for anyone but me, but I don't see the use in them. Moreover, because of SOME slacker harness users, there's a negative attitude out there about them. Bottom line, I don't think there's any acceptable substitute for parental vigilance. Just my 2 cents.

How is it that all kids can master that whole putting their arms straight in the air so they can slip out of your grasp? It amazes me that they all do these crazy things! DS did that the other night...oh fun.

Bayou....sorry now I'm gonna keep this thing going :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Hey! It's your thread ya trouble maker! :rotfl2::thumbsup2

I think you are begging the wrong people. Try the mods! It just takes 1 PM!

btw I would never really ask for a post to be locked. i'm 100% free speech. In fact really I'm against forums censoring any topic (religion, politics, etc.) but I abide cause it's not my forum.

Honestly, I have seen uglier threads. So far with the exception of a few holier than thou, most are been there done that and have the shirt peeps! I must say I have enjoyed quite a few of ya hehehe:thumbsup2

Now I must go find where my rug rats are maybe if I had leashed them they would not be rolling in the mud or splashing in a puddle. Of course I am kidding- they are coloring next to me. But I do admit I am not a germ-a-phobic when it comes to puddles and things. Kids are kids! Heck even I go splashing with them. It is how I got my Autistic one not to be afraid of rain. :cool1:

Personally I'd never put a leash on my dog and treat him like a child... oh wait...

I think this is still open because people are auctually being... dare I say it...

Civil.

I am sorry, that was sarcasm about how easily these kinds of threads are locked! apprently not very well done!

I don't understand why people think it's ok to take pictures of other people's kids and post them on the internet. If I saw someone taking a picture of my kid, I'd flip out on them!

At WDW it's very difficult to take many pictures without getting someone's kid in it. You want a picture of the castle? Probably going to have someone's kid in it, unless you are there very early. Want a picture of the parade? Probably going to be someone's kid in it.

I don't understand why people freak out if someone takes a picture of their kids. I think sometimes we're a little paranoid as a society.

I am NOT taking sides in this argument at all. What you choose to do with your kids on this is your business...

Ah but on this thread you are taking a side. There is a "side" that thinks it is their business what you do with your kids on this issue.

Your side is one I happen to agree with.

touche! I guess you are right, but in that case everyone has a "side", right?
