Hard time deciding how many points we truly need.

I was really only comparing the TOT we'd pay at VDH to the lower negotiated tax that is rolled into VGC. Since right now, those are the only two options I'm considering. I'm not going to stay off site or on cash for the foreseeable future.

I was just saying that VDH is "cheaper" than VGC up front, per point. But over time it likely evens out more with the tax being higher than the negotiated, lumped into dues, rate at VGC.

How does banking points work with a fixed week? If we buy VDH, we would alternate years there and at VGC. So would the 160 VDH get banked over?

I looked at the weeks, and the week we like to go in June is more than 160, so I don't think we'd end up doing a fixed week.

I'm not a FW expert, but I believe if you use the points before the FW is booked, it is just not booked. Once it is booked, you would need to call MS to cancel, after which the points would be available for use or banking....I think.

You don’t ever have to actually use the fixed week… so the actual week doesn’t matter. It’s just there in case you need to sell it to give it some extra value.

You just cancel your FW or if you know you won’t be using it you can call and request it not be booked. Then you just bank points like normal points.

I have a week 39 favorite week (DVC calls them favorite weeks, not fixed weeks) at VGF. Every year I've owned it, the room has booked for more than the points I own (even counting the 10% premium I had to buy to pay for DVC's administrative burden).

I paid for 157 points. In 2025 the favorite week cost 167 points. Next year it will cost 162 points.

The key with favorite weeks is to buy the last one in a season (unless you really want a particular week such as Halloween or Christmas or whatever). My favorite week is the last week of September.

This also hedges you against DVC possibly recalculating seasons. They could move my favorite week to a higher points season, but it doesn't matter to me because even if it costs 200 points to book my week, I have still only purchased (and am only paying dues on) 157 points.

As has been mentioned, I am free at any time to opt out of my favorite week and I can spend those 157 points any way I wish. My favorite week is automatically booked for me before the 11 month priority booking window opens, but it is a quick call to member services to opt out and release the points back into my account for other use if I decide. Cancellation rules for this booking are the same as any other; I have to opt out 31+ days before check-in or I have holding to deal with, for example.
