Hard or soft luggage carriers?

I just bought my first SUV (conveniently in time for our WDW trip!) and, so that everyone has enough room to spread out (5 of us in a 7 passenger vehicle) I want to put luggage on the luggage rack. I am wondering if there is an advantage to one luggage carrier over the other- hard or soft? It seems like the soft one would be much easier to store, but is it really rain proof?

We have a soft carrier so when it is not in use we fold it up and place it in the trunk.

I have a soft carrier. It has survived lots of time on top of the car in driving rain and snow. Nothing inside has ever gotten wet. The soft carriers are less expensive, you can definitely fit more in them, and they take up less space in the garage when not used.
