Hi-

First time posting on the disabilities board. In recent years my hearing has worsened and my hearing aid no longer works as well as it should. I am taking the Keys to the Kingdom Tour and it has been noted that I am hard of hearing; I was wondering what type of assistance they will provide.

Thanks

I am honestly not quite sure, but I have been told that ASL interpretation can be provided if you call at least 2 weeks in advance. Also, in Disneyland (not sure about WDW) people on tours recently have had headsets, so they can be turned up.

Do you need things to be louder? Sign language? In front so you can read lips? If you call Disney and talk to them, they should be able to give you some ideas of what is available...

Thank You Katy. I actually was compelled to go and get a new hearing aid. This might be all the help I need. When I spoke the Guest services they said they have something called Assisted Listening Systems, so I'm guessing it's a headset type device that will amplify sound. Depending on how large the crowd is and the volume of the speaker, without an aid I wouldn't hear much of anything. Unfortunately since my hearing loss developed as I grew older I do not know ASL.

Hopefully someone here can say, but in Disneyland each guest is wearing a pair of headphones, with a receiver on a lanyard. This allows the tour guide to speak in a more normal voice, and for everyone to hear.

If you wish, you can always tell the tour guide you are hard of hearing, and wish to be close to them the whole time, if that will help.

And if you want to learn ASL, never let age stop you. I was just in a small community class with two people in the 50s to 60s who were losing their hearing, and wanted to learn at least a little ASL. You certainly do not have to do this - it is a personal choice. I just hate to think of tools being denied to a person if they want to learn :)

Hope you have a great tour - I was on that tour years ago and LOVED it!

Hi Rosie,

When I took KTTK two years ago, we each received a personal headset. This allowed our guide to walk normally, including in crowds, and we could all hear him via our earpiece when we could not have heard him without it. It worked well even in situations like the HM where we were in different ride vehicles.

I am unsure of how loud the volume on the sets could be turned up, but I am quite sure mine was not on the loudest setting. So it is entirely possible you could just turn the headset up and not use any modification whatsoever.

Perhaps the yours department could get you more information - even such as, "most people use the headsets at a 5-6 but they go up to a 10."

Each person get a personal headset so that you can hear the CM guiding the group and they try to keep the groups small and manageable. They do ask that you turn it off at certain areas and when you get on rides.

We got stuck waiting for an elevator back up from the tunnels (I was using an ECV) and it was funny to hear what was going on with the group waiting on us.

Thank you everyone. I am now very much reassured.
And Katy as for the ASL....I never say never!

If you have hearing aids with t-coil let them know. if it is FM system then all you should have to do is stitch to T-coil mode.
