And for those of you from Mobile, the original home of Mardi Gras in the US:

I thought the Moon Pie originated in Chattanooga.

I've never been to Mobile, but I've heard it's beautiful there.:)

Happy Mardi Gras Day.

Wheras, the larger and better known New Orleans Mardi Gras is more famous for the beads and other trinkets, the parades in Mobile have people scrambling for moon pies!

Of course, there are beads, coins, and other candy, but when I was growing up, the chants of "moon pie..moon pie" filled the streets during parades.

I never understood why you would fight the competition for something you could walk into any store and buy cheaply! :p

I haven't been since 1990, however.

It would take more than beads and moon pies for me.:teeth:

LOL! I've never heard of the Moon Pie tradition.:)

It is amazing what some people will do for beads, isn't it?

However, we generally stayed in the more "family friendly" areas and it was always safe to take the kids!

Of course, things have probably changed by now...

A friend tells me that her grandmother had one of the first television sets in her rural area of north Mobile county. Since the parades were televised, they brought all of the kids over to watch.

The mothers thought it would be fun to surprise the kids so while they were watching, the moms came out of the kitchen and threw some candy into the living room.

Granddad jumped out of his chair yelling that that (insert colorful metaphor here) TV had exploded!!! :p :p :p
