It will be sundown in a few minutes here in the east. Time to light our menorahs.

I hope everyone gets lots of goodies this year!

Night #1 - Happy Chanukah.

Lit the menorah.
Ate latkes & sufganiot.
Watched kids open gifts.

Any chance of this thread lasting the full 8 nights?

There is if you include talk of pie and cake :rotfl:

Happy Chanukah everyone

We had latkes and apple sauce for dinner, in front of our Christmas tree. Fun times. Teaching Gabby to play Dradel is fun. She kept eating her money(M&M's).

Gabby got a huge Princess learn to write book tonight. Her Grammy and Zadie have an Educational theme for her gifts.

Happy Holidays everyone.

I think we're doing the latkes tonight. Then it's back to my diet.

I loves me some latkes and sufganiot, but only if I can make them at someone else's house. I hate the way the house stinks of onions and grease for the whole eight nights!

Happy Chanukah!

Can those of the Jewish faith educate me a bit? What part do latkes play during Hannukah and am I remembering correctly that they are potato pancakes?

In order to understand the significance of latkes on Hanukah, one must relax one's imagination a bit. (Same for understanding sufganiot). Latkes and sufganiot are cooked in oil. Back in 'the day', the lamp oil left after the destruction of the temple was only supposed to last 1 night, but it lasted 8! (long enough for more oil to be made) It's a miracle! Let's all clog our pores and arteries!

There's a lot more to the story, but that's the important bit.

HTH,
Hillary

PS - sufganiot are jelly doughnuts

OK, folks. I'm about to light two candles.

Anybody else light candles using olive oil?

Happy Chanukah. I'd be lighting candles but it would be a fire hazard at the moment

Thanks, Hillary. Any tradition that involves jelly doughnuts sounds good to me! :thumbsup2

No I use the colored candles too but my brother uses real oil and wickes for his menorah...

There's just something about the smell of burning olive oil...

What do you eat with your latkes? Applesauce or sour cream?

Guess what we're having for lunch today? LOL

Usually we have it with apple sauce. I like mustard too.
