Nan, you were a great woman! Thank you for raising me like your own son. Thank you for your unconditional love and kindness. Thank you for always making sure that we had a roof over our head, food on our table and clothes on our back. Thank you for calling me on my b.s. when I was in high school. Thank you for not holding that b.s. against me afterward. Thank you for picking up the slack that my father left hanging. Thank you for teaching me that if I wanted something, I had to work for it, for, as you said (and your voice still reverberates in my head to this day), “The world doesn’t owe anybody anything.” Thank you for always being there to pick me up when I fell. Thank you for not writing me off when I gave you so many opportunities to do just that. Thank you for thinking of me, my brother and mother before you ever thought about yourself.

Nan, I am the man I am today because of you, no doubt. You’ve taught me everything I know, and am glad that we had the time together that we did. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I miss you so much.

Happy 77th birthday, Nanny. You’ll live in my heart forever!

That was one of the most beautiful and heartfelt things I've read in a long time. She sounds like a wonderful, special, beautiful person.

Very touching post. I'm willing to bet that she's with you even if you can't be with her. As long as they are in your heart, they are never far away.

I refrained from replying to this post, as I was having a hard time putting my own emotions aside to do so.

This woman seemed like she was more then most. This woman seemed like she could bottle everyone else's problem's inside her - so that the one's she loved could enjoy life without them. This woman seemed like she would tell the one's she loved the absolute truth - no matter how much that truth may have hurt them.

Most importantly - this woman seemed like the type of person that I continuously strive to be more like - one who has the ability to put everyone's feelings before her own.

Happy Birthday to a wonderful woman - may you enjoy your day immensely.
