Hanging FE's Without Joining a Group, What do you think?

I learned a couple of things here from my fellow DISers that I did not take into consideration when I ran out of my FE gifts after 3 floors and I couldn't believe it, because I even made extra!!

~This is not the only site people plan FE at.

~People will see gifts and put out a bag.

~Have a cabin list, or you will run out.

~I probably did run out by having a cabin number, then seeing 3 pockets, not being informed of so on the original FE list. Probably, like I previously
stated, no on my FE cabin list. My mom did the one side of the floor, I did the other. We ran out.

I defer to my fellow DISers on how to work out the people who upgrade at the port.

Detailed FE lists works great.

I loved the personalized FE gift we received. I still use my travel journal....to whoever it was that gave me that ;) It came with a small personalized telephone book, the size of a business card, that is now permanently in my purse.

I love the idea of having the room steward put out gifts instead. My son is 2 and doesn't care where the gifts come from (bed or FE), but loved it when I told him that Mickey had brought him a present.

I only pass out gifts to those on my list. I am all for those who put out an FE for their kids and do their own thing.

I think it is beyond tacky to put out an FE and expect gifts. and for a TA to supposedly say this... wow, is all I can say.

So I found the blog and I interpret it differently. She said that most of the gifts that showed up were from their TA with a few things from others, which makes it seem that since the TA was on the cruise they were having their clients participate in a FE group that wasn't expected to be reciprocated. The TA told her to put it out so that there would be a place for them to put the things.

That makes more sense.

I think so also. I have seen posts about TAs doing special things for their clients whenever they are on the ship at the same time from FE gifts to hosting a gathering. Unfortunately, my post about this isn't going to be seen by many because they read the first page of posts and reply. :worried:

That sounds more like it. We are going to do the FE for our daughter ourselves and in NO way would expect FEs from others. She will love it and so will we. We might even put it inside the cabin and decorate our door another way

I have been thinking about hanging a fish extender and filling it with items for my kids without participating in an "official" FE group. Is there a knob or place to hang the fish extender inside the cabin on the Fantasy? I saw one on the Magic on the wall between the shower room and bed that would work and wonder if there is similar spot on the Fantasy.

When I've done the FE I print out a detailed list, plan my route, and only put gifts to the people on our list. On our 14 day one person put a dry erase board up where you could go and check changes. Otherwise, if a change was made and we weren't informed I skipped those people.

These are all great points - the lists we've had on more recent cruises has included the cabin number, the number of adults, the number (and ages/genders) of the cruisers. Then as a giver, you can decide if you're doing one per stateroom, one per person in stateroom, one per kid in stateroom, etc. We also indicate if families have multiple staterooms are they one family in two cabins, or are they two separate family units that are both participating (parents plus two kids in one cabin; grandparents plus 3rd kid in 2nd cabin but parents and grandparents both participating). etc.

We find that most stuff gets left in the top pocket, but having multiple pockets is great for overflow :)

Maybe I could attach a little sign to it- stating that we are not participating in any group- only a family group? (We are 3 cabins). I have no intention of getting goodies from lovely people trying to make certain all people in their group receive FE items...

Creating and hanging a FE for grandson was always my plan- but didn't consider it would confuse others in a group. I guess I thought-- if our cabins weren't on their list they would automatically walk past us...

Thoughts? And if you could be gentle- I would appreciate it so much... having a rough week here...

I don't think you attaching a disclaimer to your FE is necessary. If someone puts something in there that is their choice. You have your own thing going with your FE, you are not soliciting gifts from others simply by having it hanging there. As many have said, there could be multiple FE groups onboard so if someone sees your FE they should check their list and not assume you are in their group.

YOu are speaking my very thoughts.:) That is what I was assuming, before I read this thread. I had no intention or idea that hanging a FE might appear as though we were expecting gifts.

By hanging a FE for grandson... I am just trying to add a bit of pixie dust for my family! Our grown children have been so supportive and loving to their dad (and myself) during our cancer fight... This cruise (IF we go) will hopefully mark a return to "normal" for us, and good health for my hubby! :lovestruc

I gotta get that ticker updated! :rolleyes1

This is how I read it as well.
Also, did you notice the date it was posted? It was March 2012, so not a recent addition to the blog.

Just wanted to send you some ((((hugs)))) and best wishes to your hubby. I'll keep my fingers crossed that we see an updated ticker soon.

:confused3 Yeah, I don't understand the controversy. If I noticed a FE that wasn't on my list, I would assume it was another group and move on. No skin off my nose.

How do I know how many items to get and who will be in my FE Group. We are on the July 15, 2013 cruise to Alaska......would love to participate - did back in 2010 when we went to Bahamas and thought it was great! Just my husband and I are on this Golden Wedding Anniversary trip......

Go to the Disney Cruise Meets section and find your cruise dates. There should be some mention of FE's if your fellow cruisers have organized. On our first cruise, there was a spread sheet that you could add your name and family members' ages.

I just checked your sailing and FE's are mentioned in the first post under your date.

Now that makes a lot more sense. I can still see where the blog could be misleading people into thinking that all they have to do is hang up an FE and gifts would appear. But at least knowing that this person's TA was on the ship and the TA was the one leaving the gifts, it becomes more of an oversite on the blogger's post (leaving out the part about joining a group) rather than a suggestion to put out an FE just so people will leave them gifts.

Why are you assuming that FEs not on your list are people taking advantage of others and not (1) a family doing their own FE gifts for the kids; (2) a FE exchange created from a different website or other group that is not your own?

To the rest of the thread:

If I put up a FE without signing up for a group, no one has to put anything in it if I'm not on their list. Likewise, someone can create gifts to hand out to any FE they see and never sign up for a group in return, nor even have an FE on their door. An FE is not an automatic demand for a gift.

As far as I've been told whenever FE origins come up on the boards, this whole practice started as a way to spread Disney Magic and pixie dust to other people on the cruise. This idea that we are entitled to expectations of value and effort and quid pro quo is kind of boggling, especially when the burden is consistently being put on the person hanging the FE and not the person choosing to hand out gifts, either to a room on their list OR to a room not on their list. YES, people who put out an FE EXPECTING gift for no effort are greedy people. BUT, if the idea of giving something for nothing--or for very little in exchange--just to make someone's day a little better REALLY bothers you that much, then don't sign up.

My four-year-old DD has been working very hard on what are going to look like incredibly cheap bookmarks. It's what we can afford and she is desperately excited to hand them out. We will not be putting our names on them because I believe that FE gifts should be anonymous to avoid exactly this kind of accounting mentality and ensuing judgement. The thought that a single person would dismiss not only her hard work but also her learning experience simply because their gift was "better" or bigger or just MORE makes me want to cry. We love Disney because the brand teaches our children that true magic is made by people, at the micro and macro levels. That includes the FE exchange.

Excellent post, and I also do not put our names on our gifts. It's supposed to be magic.
