Currently I am just waiting the final 2 weeks or so until my purchased points from the Timeshare Store goes through. I haven't been able to talk to guest services for the answer to this one...... How many handicapped rooms are available at the DVC properties resort wide and will I have trouble renting one? :confused3
For our first two trips in 2007 and 2008 we are taking elderly grandparents along with us and will need rooms to accommodate them. Our home base is SSR, but we were thinking one of the two trips may be at an epcot resort for closeness to the Food and Wine fest.

At 11 months, I don't think you'll have trouble...at least we haven't so far. But when the 7 month window opens, you'll obviously be competing with more people especially for the Epcot resorts at F&W. Even so, we have had luck with the waitlist for the most part when we have had to change our plans.

Most people seem to want to avoid the accessible rooms.

I don't know how many accessible rooms there are although I do think there are 5 2BR at BCV with rollin showers. We've had 3 of them so far.

Good luck with your plans and have fun with your grandparents!

Congratulations and (almost) Welcome Home!

The Food and Wine Festival is a busy time for Boardwalk Villas and Beach Club Villas. Since your home resort is SSR, you would have to wait until the 7-month mark to make your reservation at either one. There may be something left two weeks after things open up for non-BWV/BCV owners ... or there may not. You're just going to have to play it by ear.

Remember there are different types of handicap rooms. What specifically will you need? Do you need roll in showers, raised toilettes and grab bars? If so, those types of rooms are usually available as long as the general room class (studio, on bedroom, whatever) is available at the resort. If you need that type of room, you should go no only through MS but also through special services, as they can block specific rooms. Once you make you your reservation with MS, explain that you must have a handicap room and ask for special services to block it.

It all depends on what time of year you are going.

The Food and Wine Festival is very popular, so availability then might be difficult.

We travel off season and have not found a problem at all.

We booked our upcoming trip to OKW last july (about 6.5 months out) and were able to get confirmed reservations for both a HA Grand Villa and a HA 2-bedroom unit.

Availability at SSR and probably OKW will not be a problem as they have more accessible units. (All the accessible rooms at SSR have roll-in showers, raised toilets and grab bars.)

Boardwalk, Beach Club and Wilderness Lodge have fewer rooms and consequently less availability. (I think Beach Club only has about 8 accessible rooms.) During the F&W festival the Boardwalk/Beach Club area is in high demand.

Getting accessible studios seem to be more of a problem than 1 bedrooms because of the cheaper point difference.

I need a fully accessible room for my travels (I need a roll-in shower), so my first request home (made last May for December) was an interesting experience. I had wanted to do an accessible studio at VWL. No rooms available, though they did have a non-accessible 1 bedroom. No studios at SSR either, but some accessible 1 bedrooms at BCV for part of my stay. I ended up getting an accessible 1 bedroom at SSR at 6.5 months out for the entire length of my stay. I even changed the ressies later to extend my trip without a hitch.

When you call to make your reservations, let the MS guide know you need an accessible room when you tell them the dates. They'll put you on hold, call special services and check on availability. It saves time if your pretty clear about what you need, where you want to go and when. Then you can authorize the MS agent to check availability and book the room. I've made 3 reservations so far (going again in May and October) with a mix of points, pay, weekends and weekdays and various accommodations. I call, tell them what I want, wait on hold for about 5 minutes and they get back to me with a confirmation number. I've even called back to add a day and had no problems.
