Handicapped accessible in BLT

We're staying in a 2BR villa at BLT this October along with my dad. His health status has changed some in that I think a handicapped accesible room would be best for him. He'll be using an ECV for the parks, but in the room, the hand bars by the toilet and shower will be really important for him not to fall. We just saw him today and he's just not as steady as he used to be. I'll call MS in the morning to request handicapped accessible, but I'm guessing it's not guaranteed?

For the HA 2BR, does the master bedroom still have a jacuzzi/whirlpool tub? We currently have a decicated, and we would prefer to take the master for us and have my dad and his girlfriend stay in the 2nd bedroom....but would the 2nd bedroom be handicapped accesible as well--i.e., the bathrooms set up with hand bars/rails?

One more questions--do HA rooms only end in 12 or 14 on the North side, or are there other HA rooms in BLT?

Thanks!

Call MS and tell them you need to get a Handicap Accessible room for your reservation. They will place you on hold while they contact the special needs group that will verify they can reserve the HA room for you. You no longer contact special needs directly.

This will pretty much be a guaranteed room type once you do this. I've heard of one or two mix-ups but this is not like an ordinary room request and should be received.

As to whether the 2nd BR will be accessible also is hard to say - I don't know what they've done at BLT. Did you reserve a lock-off or dedicated. If it's a lockoff then see if they can reserve the studio portion to be accessible. Otherwise it's usually the Master that is accessible from what I've seen. But you will still have the Jacuzzi. There are various levels of accessible which you may be able to designate. There are rooms that have the grab bars you are talking about but otherwise or normal rooms. Then there are rooms with roll in showers - and those are usually in the Master of a 1BR/2BR.

Some one on the BLT thread recently posted pictures from their HA 2BR now that I think of it. http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=37442388&postcount=1061

My husband is a quadriplegic and we have stayed in a non accessible 1BR at BLT. We kept it non accessible because we wanted the jacuzzi tub. I believe that if you request a handicap accessible room, even if it is two bedroom, it will not have a jacuzzi tub. The master is what should be accessible. The bedroom in the hall of the 1BR did have handle bars in the shower. I can't remember if it had bars next to the toilet; I will try to see if I can find a pic or video of it to double check. An accessible room will have a roll in shower, that's pretty much what a wheelchair accessible room is. As far as room numbers, I'm not sure. My opinion is that a non accessible room would probably fit your needs, as many of the bathrooms have the handle bars already. Good luck planning!

That's not true at BLT, a regular HA room (not a roll a Handicap room with roll in shower) does have a jacuzzi tub and a second tub with shower with hand rails. The HA room eliminates the walk in shower as the shower is located in the HA railed tub.

I do not believe the above to be correct. AFAIK except for Jambo house that does not have a separate jacuzzi and walk in shower in any of the rooms all HA 1BR and 2BR's have the jacuzzi in the Master Bedroom so you can feel comfortable in booking a handicap accessible room in the future. They will have the Jacuzzi but the walk in shower is changed to a roll in.

The studios are the room size that will not have a tub b/c like all Jambo there is only a tub/shower combo to start with so they change those to be a roll in shower. The exception to this seems to be BLT which has a different layout in the accessible rooms and they have both a tub and a shower in the HA studios. I'm not certain if that's in all the HA studios there but it's been the case in most pictures I've seen.

Last December at BLT we had a lock off handicap room(on confirmation) booked. Upon check in we had not been assigned a handicap room. It was eventually all worked out but we received a dedicated HC room. We had the roll in shower as needed but also had the whirlpool tub in the master. The second bedroom was not handicap. I had wanted the lock off so that the second bedroom would have the roll in shower. We were very happy for the mix up as we had a LV booked and ended up with a room close to the evlevators and a great view of the fireworks. NYE fireworks from our room were fantastic. I did have issue's with the CM checking us in because he kept saying are you sure you need the roll in shower. I finally brought Dson over(5'8' and 170lbs)and told the CM nope don't really need it if every night you are willing to come to our room and lift Dson in and out of the bath tub for us. At this point he disapeered for awhile and got everything taken care of. Said he had to go talk to housekeeping??? This is the second time we have had issue's with booking a HC room. Last time was at AKV. We had a HC GV booked. Upon check in found out we were put in a regular room. We had to wait while the people in our room were moved(sure they weren't happy) and the GV cleaned. We were still in our room by 4pm. We have never had issue's with our HC room assignment's at SSR. I don't let it bother me because I know with the room being confirmed on my ressie paper(which I insit upon) I will end up with what I need. Susan

This is a picture of the shower in a non-accessible Master bathroom at BLT. We recently took a BLT tour and were told that the accessible Master bath with a roll in shower would have the roll in shower in this same space.

We were told that the jacuzzi tub in BLT would still be present in the same place in the accessible-roll-in-shower unit. Here’s the jacuzzi from a non-accessible room.
