My MIL may be joining us at BWV in April. She is confined to a wheelchair. As of yet, I have not requested a handicap room but will if she decides to join us.

My question............can the studio portion of a 2 BR be the only handicapped area? What are the handicap 2 BR's consist of? My younger girls love the bathtub and I would prefer to only have one side of the 2 BR handicapped. Also, what floor are handicap room located on? Another question, would there be any way of getting a definete confirmation on having handicap rooms prior to us leaving? (that would help us to know if we need to bring her shower seat or not?!!).

Sorry so many questions, just want to be prepared!!!

Well, I don't know definitively that there there are no "mixed" handicap 2bdrm combos, but it doesn't make much sense that there would be. So, I imagine that if you get a 2bdrm HA, the WHOLE thing will be HA. However, on the bright side...it is my understanding that in a 2bdrm, the master suite STILL has the tub. Only the studio does not have a tub.

This was a big issue for me because I have a toddler who is scared of showers, so when we stay in studios I get nervous about getting a HA. But, someone told me that even 1bdrm HA rooms have a tub.

Have fun,

We have not stayed in an accessible 2BR at BWV but have at BCV and VB. The whole units are accessible with accessible showers in both bathrooms but the whirlpool tub in the MB is still there. No tub in the studio. There are some differences in the kitchen but no big deal. From what I've read the same is true at all DVC units.

When we have booked the accessible rooms since joining DVC, MS has put me on hold while working with the Special Needs department. It has always been my understanding that once Special Needs has your reservation, your room assignment is locked in and only that department can change it. The front desk can't touch it. So if you book it, you'll get it. When I make a reservation through DRC not MS, I always end up speaking directly with the special needs folks but with a DVC reservation, MS does the talking. They will probably ask you a few discreet questions to make sure the rooms matches the needs of your MIL. For instance some people really only need a tub with grab rails while otheres need a rollin shower.

We had a Handicap Accessible 2BR in November on the 1st floor at BWV, overlooking the backside of Leaping Horse Libations and the Luna Park pool area. We had rooms 1068/1070. We had Std View reserved, but this might have been preferred. My wife did not like the location at all, tho we came to love it, since it was a quick roll directly out to the Boardwalk or pool; very very convenient, no messing around with elevators. Also the patio being near the pool bar meant that a good husband like myself could easily go fetch a Margarita for my DW. DS is wheelchair bound, tho we did not ask for a HA unit, this might have been why they put us there.

The studio portion was the most notably accessible, with a BIG bathroom, no tub and the kitchen stuff at a lower level. In the 1BR portion, there was the standard Jacuzzi tub (with grab bars) and a roll in shower (ie not enclosed) and the kitchen seemd to be on a slightly lower level, tho I did not notice this for several days.

InstImpres has compiled lists of HA rooms at various resorts and also has collected BWV room reports for our use. (Thx again Sandy!). She is getting around to updating things at some point so it does not include our report from November.

I hope this helps. Have a great trip! And if you have any queries about getting around on wheels, I'm here for you, as are all the folks on the DISabilities board who have much more experience with all sorts of things. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your quick responses.

I guess, since the whirltub is still there, then it won't bother my younger DD's who just love a bath!!!!

Do the rollin showers have shower seats??? I am wondering if we need to bring MIL's!!!

Thanks again..........

I know the studio showers at OKW have the shower seats. I would assume that all of them do.

Yes, the rooms we've had do. It is attached to the wall and folds down. Much more stable than the portable ones. But when you make your reservation, I would just ask so you won't have any doubts.

Thanks!!! I just looked at the list of rooms that Pumpkinboy had linked. any of those HA 2BR's seem great and would satisfy our needs but I would love the one on the 5th floor!!!! Only it does not say if it has a balcony or not.?!?!? I would assume at least one balcony. MIL would really like that!! NOt to mention ME!!

AFAIK, all of the BWV rooms have either a patio (ground floor) or a balcony. Don't believe there are any upper floor rooms without a balcony.

Best wishes -
