:confused3 HANDICAP TAG for RENTAL CAR :confused3 ... :surfweb: Greetings fellow DISers. :wave2: My question to you is: :woohoo: How does an out-of-state handicap driver, who has a metal handicap license plate (not placard) on their car in their home state, go about getting a temporary handicap "tag" for a rental vehicle in Florida, to take advantage of the handicap parking spaces in Florida, and to legally park in a handicap parking space while staying at a WDW resort? :moped: ... :thumbsup2 Thank you in advance.:flower1::hug:

Our state issued us a placard. Check your state regs. I would be surprised if they didn't permit you to get a placard, in addition to your plates.
Good luck with it.

We have both the plate on 2 vans and the hang tag one for each kid.

We can't get plates anymore because (at least in Minnesota), if the person with a disability is over 18 they must be the principle driver or owner of the vehicle to get plates; DD is neither. When we did have plates, we also had a hangtag.
I agree with the others. There is not a way for you to get a handicapped permit from Florida - those are only available to residents. But, you very well may be able to get a hangtag from your home state. Since you already have license plates, you might be able to just call up and get a hang tag without filling out any more forms.

I agree with going to your state Motor Vehicles to get a hang tag.

Your only other option would be to get an application from the Florida web site and bring it with you. Then go to a motor vehicle office here after arrival and get a temporary tag.

Last choice would be rent an accessible van, which is over $100 per day, which would come with HP plates on it.

I don't think he can get a temporary permit from Florida.
From what I have read on the Florida Motor Vehicle website, you would either have to have a Florida Driver's License or Florida ID card to be eligible to apply for one.

Sue I think I would fight that. Do you have guardianship over your daughter? If so that makes her the same as a minor in the eyes of the courts.

I don't know if this is currently the case, but a couple of years back my travel company was advising handicap disk holders from the UK to obtain temporary hang tags from the Motor Vehicle office in Orlando on arrival.

The rule in the UK is that if you qualify as 'disabled' you are entitled to the UK equivalents of both hang tags (UK blue badge) and licence plate (UK 'disabled' tax disk). The assumption in the UK is that you may not be able to drive or my choose not to and that a friend or relative (or even a taxicab) may need to park to drop you off in their own car. I cannot believe that this would not be a guiding principle in any of the states!!

We are her guardians. It doesn't make sense to us, but we did go up the line to the Supervisor of the person who told us "no". The supervisor was sympathetic, but when she checked further up, they still said no and said that if we wanted to get the plates, we'd have to put the van in her name.
As long as they would still give us a hangtag, we decided we didn't have the energy to fight it then. Their logic was that if the person with a disability was not the person driving the majority of the time, they would just bring their handtag when riding.
I think for people from the UK, it was a different situation. I think at one time the UK blue tag was not officially recognized in the US, so you had to jump thru some extra hoops. The handicapped permits from each US state is recognised in every other state (the exception used to be Washington DC, which only recognized it's own permits. I just read yesterday that Washington DC agreed to recognize all the states.

When I got my HP parking in Massachusetts it was an either or situation. If you had a car registered in the disabled person's name then he could either get HP plates or a placard. We were leasing our van at that time so I have a placard. I would ask at your state RMV to see if they would issue a temporary hang tag. Good luck.
