Hand sanitizer worries?

Anything that is a topical application weather OTC or prescription can be deadly if the directions are not followed. Creams, gels...etc are absorbed into the bloodstream.

I gotta laugh at this post--sorry for those who feel adamantly one way or the other--anyway, I taught Kindergarten when hand sanitizers first came out, and everyone loved them!!! If I had a nickel for every bottle used in a classroom and by every playgroup-savvy-mom . . . anyway, true story--
One of my own beautiful, darling children (I'm mom of 2--age 5 & 4) sneezed at SAHM playgroup. I reached for a tissue to wipe his hands off, and another mom said "that's okay, I've got it". She pulls out the Purell. Has DS rub his hands together with it on his hands. A few moments later, he's beside me, and, he still has BOOGERS on his hands!!! Perhaps they were bacteria-free boogers, but, either way, I am adamant about washing away the bacteria (and the boogers) instead of simply sanitizing them! :)

We use the hand sanitizers and I think they are great. DS is a thumb-sucker and I just spread it around evenly in his hands and have him do the same. I have him wave his hands around in the air and he is just fine. There are times when I know he sneaks his thumb in his mouth before I can get it all dried off, but it has no effect on him whatsoever. I believe it works great for those times and places when hand-washing is not available.

:rotfl: that a great one... geerm free boogies!

I'm not so concerned that people use them, but that they are overused and forced on schools, daycares, ect. In some places (here for example) daycare providers HAVE to use it on their hands. Forcing people to do something not proven to be more effective than the old method, but with plenty of evidence that it has negative effects is nuts.
I don't think it should be present in schools. They get just as good results by washing with soap, and you eliminate any risk of accidental or purposefull ingestion. The thought of eating that stuff makes me sick... ew, the things people will do to get high!

As a 2nd grade teacher, I have my kids use it before lunch. They each get one squirt (dispensed by a helper) and rub it in while in line for lunch. This takes about 30 seconds as opposed to 5 minutes (at least) in the bathroom washing hands. It is the only time during the day they are allowed to use it. After bathroom or crafts they use soap and water. I also do not allow them to have it at their desks.

Make sure your kids hands are dry from the sanitizer before they start eating. Thats what they are worried about too.

my son just loves opening the caps of those little bottles with his teeth. that's where we get into trouble, lol. i don't want my kid downing a bottle of rubbing alcohol either, but i'm not banning it from my home. it's all about parental supervision--the responsibilities are endless!!! i agree w/ the poster who said some contact w/ germs is good for the immune system--but there are some dirty birdies out there and it's just common sense to clean your hands before eating and after touching things that many other people have touched, after sneezing in your hand, yada, yada. i think hand sanitizers have their place--esp when you consider how easy it is to recontaminate yourself when washing hands in a public rest room!!!!!!

A toddler would have to ingest an ounce to reach the level of intoxication to be legally drunk. An ounce is a LOT of hand sanitizer! The bottle in my purse is 3 oz. and I think a toddler would get tired of it before drinking 1/3 of the bottle. If used appropriately it a very useful thing to have.:)

The only thing I've heard is that you should be careful if you use it and have a baby. something (perhaps an urban myth) about parents having it on their hands and then it getting into the baby's system from them handling the baby right after using it.
