Ok I know quite a few of us are going in the next five weeks me included,

On the hand luggage frount do you think the ban will still be in place,?

I have just been watching gmtv, and theyre saying that flights to the usa can not take anything bought in duty free on board that includes water, yet the euro flights can take a little duty free and water.

While I dont mind this, as I enjoy feeling safer. I was wondering if theres any point taking money to the airport now, apart from just for food. As we cant buy anything. I guess its more shopping money

Also have any of you checked with you insurance company about valubles being covered in the hold, ie phones keys etc.? as some sources are saying you arnt covered. I am going to check with mine this evening.

It's jusy my guess, but I think there will be a lowering of the security threat and this will go hand in hand with some relaxation of the prevailing rules about what we can take on board. I have to say that I doubt that we will see 'normality' ever return, and in particular liquids will remain a no no.

I'm going to wait a little as we don't travel until mid October, but I agree, it's worthwhile seeking the view from your travel insurer about valuables in the luggage.

An ill wind always blows somebody some good, and pilfering from hold luggage is going to be a big problem if vcrs and mobiles etc. have to be put in suitcases.

I leave in 5 weeks to and I would put money on it that they will allow us our hand luggage back, maybe not as much as before. I am gutted about duty frees though. I usually purchase my make up and my perfumes, wine before the flight to the USA. :confused3

I agree with jna, I think we will see the threat level reduced at some point and the restrictions on what people are allowed to carry on as hand luggage lifted.

However the airlines have been looking into limiting what people take as hand luggage and I suspect that they might see this as an opportunity to implement some of those changes under the guise of improving security.

There are a lot of companies who have money in selling stuff to passengers airside though so there will be some negotiation on what is and isn't allowed I would think.

Alan, that thought had gone through my mind as well, but I was a little nervous about referring to financial implications, but they will come into play.

Another idea is that maybe the airports need to put more security into the luggage transportation areas in an attempt to cut down the opportunities for theft.

I suspect security levels will be raised everywhere, including the luggage areas. At least in the short term whilst this incident is still fresh in everyones minds.

Simon Calder was saying on BBC Breakfast this morning that under the Montreal Convention if you pack something high value like your laptop in the hold and it gets damaged or stolen then you are entitled to the princely sum of about £50 in compensation :sad2: I really think that the whole issue of insurance and compensation needs to be reviewed if this situation is to continue, although that will inevitably mean the passengers being charged more

If a terrorist can hide an explosive (or part of) in a drinks bottle now, they'll still be able to do so in a few weeks time. I personally believe that this will lead to changes in how we fly, especially to the USA. The airlines will be able to charge a kings ransome for food, drink and entertainment on aircraft now that we're banned from taking our own. Using the "security" guise they'll see this as an opportunity to make some money.

It's a bit like speed cameras, even if no one is hurt or injured on a road they won't take the cameras away as they provide a steady revenue stream.

I have to say that although I would rather risk it than risk my security - and that of the other passengers - I am very worried about putting my stuff in the hold. We will be travelling with a digital camera and digital video camera worth well over £1000 between them and the thought of packing them in my suitcase where they could get nicked or severely damaged fills me with dread. We also carry a sonicare (OH refuses to take a normal toothbrush), ipods, mobile phones etc so it's a big worry. I'm actually quite glad that I haven't yet gotten around to choosing travel insurance though as it means I'll be able to find the ones willing to cover my stuff in the hold if it comes down to it. I hope they can come up with a scanner that can look inside electronic equipment better so we will be allowed to keep it with us.

True, but the airlines will need to weigh up the pros and cons of that tactic. Incidents like yesterday's do deter a lot of people from flying, perhaps only for a period of time rather than never again. In one way or another this event will cost but in order to tempt people back into the air, a more subtle approach will need to be taken.

Take the fuel surcharges, as one example. A barrel of oil falls in price to close to or where it was before the surcharges were added, but they leave them on or don't reduce tham for a period of time thereafter. Something like that. Can go unnoticed.

I must admit we will be carrying an ipod, a handheld computer, digital camera etc with us, I arnt keen about the hold either, I mean I did buy the tsa locks, but £50 compensation is rubbish if any of these get pinched.

I mean of course I can leave the ipod home but we need the rest

To be honest if it remains the same then the laptop and camcorder will stay at home along with my nice digital camera and would pack DH's older digital camera in the hold luggage. Would take extra memory cards though and also download onto cd and put that in a different bag for the return journey, so at least would still have digital pics. Would also possibly leave the mobile phone at home and just use a pre paid card for calls home. Oh and the iPod would stay at home as well as it is only used in the airport and for the flight!

I have a feeling that they wont cover for valuables in the hold, even if forced to put them in there if you want to take them.

Good point. I imagine it'll be a boom time for those insurers that are willing to cover checked baggage.

They were saying on GMTV this morning to call your insurance company up and explain the situation and they may amend it so that you are covered if anything happens yo your stuff in the hold? Worth a try at least?

I aren't going till next year but I would be worried to put my digial camera / camcorder in the hold. Dont get me wrong I prefer to be safe and understand them putting in these measures, its just that I have seen the way luggage is treated my some airport staff and its not good! :sad2:

Not sure they will ever allow electronic equipment in the cabin again, so I think insurance companies will have to change their policies (at our expense of course!).

You may be able to get cover on your house contents insurance for some items.

Eventually, I think they will only allow items purchased in the airside duty free shops to be taken on as hand baggage.

If we really don't want to risk getting our valuables stolen or damaged, We will just have to all go back to basics and travel without our camcorders, laptops etc... We managed fine without them 20 years ago, so why not now? We'll just have to keep the memories in our hearts. By the looks of things we should be grateful to get to our destinations in one piece !

Ditto - DH bought a lovely new camera bag to take on as had luggage as we each have a digital camera, digital video, spare rechargeable batteries and a gizmo to download the photos onto so we have a lot of expensive camera equipment I'm very concerned about. We could get a specialised strong case for the equipment I know, but even if you do get covered on your insurance the photos would be irreplaceable to us with it being our first visit. And what's to stop some thief nicking it off the carousel before you get to claim it.
They may have to think up some special drop off and pick up for valuables in the hold.

DisneyD - we certainly didn't manage without our cameras 20 years ago as a very full cupboard of photos tells. It would bother me a great deal after waiting to go all these years to visit and then not to have any photographic memories of my holidays. Mobile phones and laptops do not bother me, can manage very well without them but I accept that everyone has different pleasures in life and want to take different things with them.

They said on Radio 2 when discussing yesterdays events that you will be able to buy I-pods (if you can afford them), books etc at the shops once you have passed through security.

.

I absolutely agree and I didn't actually mention not taking a camera.
