Where can I find them without ordering from an online retailer?

Well, I think I may have a solution.

On the instructables site, there is a demonstration called, "DIY Hammock Tree Straps". I think it will help with what I have in mind.

hee hee. The pic may be all a scoutmaster, anyway, needs.
That DIY ought to work fine, we just use the pictured poly straps(bought at Walmart) by themselves, alone, to hang the hammock when we travel....and that works for us!

I was gonna suggest winch straps from Walmart.
