Oooh ooh...maybe the whole "hamburg" thing is like us Italians who often leave off the end of a word, like:
Manicotti= often pronounced Man-ih-got
Ricotta= Rih-got
Cappicolla= Cap-ih-col
Maybe they just left off the "er" at the end of Hamburger when pronounced?

I'm constantly saying "rigot." I had to explain to my DH once what rigot was when I asked him to pick some up for dinner.
