Never heard of Hamburg, except the city. Now that I am thinking about it, why is it called HAMburger anyway if it comes from a cow?! :confused3

It was named after the city of Hamburg, Germany, where it originated. It was a ground beef patty called Hamburger Steak that German immigrants brought over. I thinkthe bun got added in the USA, but I'm not sure...will have to consult MArc Summers. ;)

Hot Dog = Frankfurter....same deal, named after the city in Germany.

chopped meat, pronounced chopmeat ;)

We usually say ground beef or hamburger meat

I'm glad there are a few of us here who call it ground beef or "hamburger meat". I've been made fun of by one of my good friends on the DIS who says that the phrase "hamburger meat" is redundant :rolleyes1. But to me, hamburger is a sandwich, and not a type of meat (although I know what people are talking about when they say it).

I use ground beef and hamburger interchangeably.

My mom calls it hamburg, and I think my dad does as well, but I'm not sure.

Where is your MIL from? How old is she? My parents are from SW PA and are in their 70s.

My grandmother says hamburg. She has spen most of her life in SE PA (born in Baltimore though) and is 74.

I call the raw, ground meat hamburger or ground beef. But it's typical to hear hamburger meat around here. Drives me crazy. We don't ever hear pork chop meat or chicken meat. :teeth: Never heard hamburg. Is everyone that seems to say that from the same region?

I call it ground beef. If I'm using ground beef to make a patty and throw it on a bun, it becomes a hamburger.

Same with ground chicken and ground turkey.

I'm scratching my head at your MILs name for it... =)

I hate when someone says hamburg. My ex MIL would say that. Maybe that is why I hate it.

My ex-mil-fil called it hamburg. Upstate Pennsylvania.

I say ground turkey since we don't use beef. My mother uses "hamburg" (late sixties from western PA).

It appears to be a PA thing! I'm from LI, NY and I call it Chopped meat (as the other poster said, it's pronounced "chopmeat" since we say it so quickly). OCCASSIONALLY we might say Ground Beef. Hamburger isn't unacceptable, but it really should pertain only to the patty form. In the South a hamburger patty is called a hamburger steak.

Hamburg...totally unacceptable unless you're talking about Germany.
