Ham for Christmas?

I have never bought a Honey baked ham but have enjoyed one and they are delicious. The Pioneer Woman from the cooking channel just did a Christmas special, she made a ham and glazed it herself. I have tried many of her recipes and have never been disappointed. You can go to her website and try her recipe. thepioneerwoman.com

Strange question: are the spiral cut hams from the groceries (i.e. Aldi) ready to serve like HBH? I don't warm my HBH so I need the ham ready to unwrap and go on the table.

Thanks,

Melissa

I always get the spiral cut that I can get for the best deal. I have gotten Aldi, Smithfield at Wal-Mart and other brands other places. My trick is I cook in in a browning bag and am careful not to overcook it. It is cooked, so safe and just needs heating. I take it out of the bag to glaze and brown up. Never had one not be delicious.

The Aldi spiral ham is fully cooked. Not sure about the others.

We made one last Christmas from either aldi, costco, or sams...can't remember. Prior to that I had always purchased from HBH. The one we made ourselves was super easy and tasted great!

Aldi has a spiral cut ham that I think tastes better than a Honeybaked Ham for a fraction of the price. We get one every year.

I've never been privileged enough to taste a Honeybaked Ham, but I have purchased/made the Aldi spiral ham before and I think it is delicious, and have never received a complaint.

Thanks! There's an Aldi near me. Safeway website says their spiral cut is fully ready too…and I have 10% coupon…hmmm…

So what's a good per pound price for spiral cut? Safeway ad says 1.99 lb.

I have hams from Wal-mart Sams, Alidi, and Food Lion Bi-lo I just make own glaze there is just good.

I just get a spiral ham at Raley's (my local grocer), we don't have Kroger or Aldi's here. I use the glaze packet that is included and I use Peach Schnapps to thin it instead of the water it calls for. It's amazing!!! :D

I have switched to the Smithfield hams that you can get from Walmart. The first year I got one everyone loved it and asked where I got it from. Look for the one that come with the brown sugar glaze packet. Instead of using water that is needed to mix the sugar glaze I use coke or pepsi

I am the official ham maker in my family. This was decided after I made the following recipe several years ago. My stepfather HATES ham but loves this, LOL.

Orange Glazed Ham

Ingredients
1 5- to 6- pond cooked ham (rump half or shank portion) I always use bone in ham---we found that spiral cut dries out quickly during cooking.
24 whole cloves
2 teaspoons finely shredded orange peel
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
4 teaspoons cornstarch
1 1/2 teaspoons ground mustard

  1. Score ham by making diagonal cuts in a diamond pattern. If desired, stud ham with cloves. Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Bake in a 325 oven for 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hours.
  2. While baking make glaze with orange peel, orange juice, brown sugar, cornstarch, and dry mustard. Put all items in a medium saucepan and stir. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Makes 1 1/4 cups glaze
  3. Bake ham until meat thermometer registers 140. Brush ham with orange glaze during the last 20 min of baking.
  4. Serve with remaining glaze.

I don't buy any meat from Aldi, but b/c someone I know raved about their ham I gave it a try. It is probably the best ham I've had. I always order fresh turkeys and have always bought HBH, but now I am an Aldi ham girl. My family all loves it too.

So, we almost always fork over the cash for a honeybaked ham on Christmas, but I'm desperately trying to cut some of the frivolous spending out of our budget. Do any of you have an alternative? Am I better off just getting one from the grocery store and making some kind of glaze myself? Do you know if any of the grocery store delis have prepared hams, kind of like they offer turkeys for Thanksgiving?

I like for Christmas to be lower stress than Thanksgiving, so we can enjoy the day together instead of cooking, but the cheapest Honeybaked Ham I can find is around $58 with a $5 coupon, and that just seems like tooooo much.

Thanks for the help!

It is pricey, but so good and I only get in once a year -- for Christmas. Just haven't found any other ham that compares, but I do agree that the price is kind of outrageous.

Not a HBH fan. Overpriced and too smoky to make decent soup after. We are Costco ham people all the way....

I've bought my spiral honey hams at SAMs club. The packet goes on later. To bake I do make a patting of real maple syrup and brown sugar. I put it face down and them brush it all over and in between, wrap it in foil to bake until the last 15 min. Then I make the glaze that came with it the foil off. It is crisp outer and tender inside.

I keep the dripping and use for my ham and butter bean soup. Use the bone, dripping cover with water, add sauté onions in butter. I use Catsup in it too for tank.
To make it thicker, when I sauté gthe onions I add flour to make a roux before mixing into the broth. Then add the cubed left over ham.

Wow I'm using your recipe for christmas. The orange and ground mustard have my mouth watering. Does it have to have the cloves? I have a family member who doesn't like them.

I just bought one of these. I got an 8 pounder for $12 and some change. They were one sale and then another $3 off.
