Hallowen party question

This year will be our first trip to Disneyland when the Halloween party is going on. We have our regular park tickets, as well as our Halloween party tickets all lined up. What sort of things are in store for us?
I have heard you can arrive 3 hours prior to the actual event starting, and that there is free candy. If we use our park tickets prior to the event (say for breakfast and some "quick" rides) what time do they usually kick people out? Are there any special foods or treats we should look out for?
