Oh boy, I know I will probably catch heck for starting a Halloween thread, but...we have been invited to a party on Halloween, then we'll be trick or treating as a family (only the kids getting candy, parents along for security purposes only, lol).
How do we handle it when no one will be home at our house during trick-or-treat hours? I want to pass out candy, I am not cheaping out in any way, do we take turns staying home for like a half hour at a time? I figure we will be out a total of 2 hours. Our neighborhood is full of chatty old people so it takes forever and a day to make the rounds. :rotfl: I'm sure my husband would volunteer to stay home most of the time because he's not as into it as we are but I know the kids like him to go out with them for a while. Anyone ever set out a basket? The kids around here are pretty good, the honor system might work, but then again it might not. Any ideas?:confused
By the way, I do not feel comfortable with our second oldest staying home alone with people coming to the door...the oldest is going to a sleepover party so that won't work, either.

Yeah, leave the bowl out and make a spooky sign telling each treater that you are out flying on your broomstick and to take one only or you'll come and haunt them.

We either split up or put out a bowl. After school, DH has been taking ds10 in one direction with his buddies and the other dads (and a cooler of beer, of course), and I've been taking the 3 little ones by our house. I think ds might go sans adults this year, so maybe I'll volunteer to hand out candy (although we don't get much traffic - we're close to a major street that gets ton).

We have two young ones that love to TorT and I love to pass out candy! We have about 400 kids come through the neighborhood and dh and I take turns with the boys. I usually go out first for about 1/2 hour and then let DH take the boys out for the remainder of the time, or whenever they got enough.

I, personally, will not leave candy sitting out alone. Too many rotten teenagers. We have some rotten ones, too.

I have a question! Do you give out candy to teen age kids that don't dress up?

We used to put a bowl out too but after the past couple of years of not seeing any of it gone...I told DH there wasn't a need for us to buy it this year and I thought he'd have a cow...he said we needed to buy it so he'd have some for himself.

Do you have any family around? My family comes over on Halloween every year. My parents live in the country and have never had any trick-or-treaters, so they pass out candy at my house while DH & I take the kids around the neighborhood. We'll usually just have some snacks and something easy for dinner, so it's like a little party. We've even had a few friends over who don't live in neighborhoods where they can take their kids trick-or-treating.

Our neighbors either have one parent stay home or they just shut off the lights while they're taking their kids around.

Everyone in our neighborhood just puts the bowl of candy on their porch. :)

My brother tried this in his subdivision in Jersey along with a sign that read "Take two please". From down the street he saw a couple of kids shovel the whole bowl into their bags and run off. Now one parent stays home and one parent goes with the kids.

If you have a place where you can put a bowl, I would go that route..

If not, I'd do the split..

I go home from the lake for Halloween for two reasons:

#1 DGD always wants me to see her dressed up in her costume
#2 I stay behind and pass out the candy..

Normally I would stay home after Halloween, but depending on the weather, I might come back up here to the lake the next day and try to squeeze out two more weeks.. :)

DH & I always worked it out so that one of us stayed home and the other went out with the kids. The "leave the bowl out" doesn't work around here. The older kids end up taking all the candy.

In our neighborhood those who are passing out candy leave the front porch lights on and in general have lights on at the house. Those who are not passing out candy don't put on the lights near the front door. Not everyone believes in celebrating Halloween - some Christians don't celebrate it and also the Jehovah's Witnesses dont.

We are always out on Halloween now so we just turn off the porch light. I like handing out the candy to the little kids though so I try to leave as late as we can since they usually go out early.
