That is a cute picture Kristin....

Jen, I'm afraid I'm really not very creative when it comes to adult costumes. I've been a witch the past several times I've dressed up. Not very original..... Rob and I weren't planning on dressing up ourselves. I'm stressing over the amount of luggage we'll be bringing! We have a large suiter that I already know is over the size limit. So we'll be paying anywhere from $50-$100 (depending on the airline Disney has us flying with) each way just to get our suitcase there and back!! And that's assuming we'll get it packed under 50lbs. So, it's going to be just the essentials!

Thanks, all! The trunk was almost 6' in diameter, 20' around just below the cut. Big tree, big house, lots of work, but all good.

Capt, have fun driving around St. Thomas. I agree it's great to be able to explore on your own, especially someplace as mostly safe as St. Thomas, but the local drivers are loco, man. And the roads are precariously narrow and twisty. My husband drove them when we were there back in 2001, and even with being accustomed to NYC drivers and easily adjusting to driving on the left, he found it challenging...although daytime driving was better by far than evenings. I'm sure you'll have fun!

Boy, I can't wait to meet everyone. :) We're such a friendly, chatty group...are we sure we'll all fit where we're meeting for the DIS meet, lol?

Have a great rest of your holiday weekend,

Sherry

Well....

As I recall havin' stayed on St Thomas w/Alicia and the new baby for near a week - we rented a tiny rent a car and cruised around a bit. Not too adventurous then as we were soooo wacked from simply caring for the young one and tryin' to travel. But I DO remember driving around and visiting a St THomas COstco! We're value nuts and I can't recall WHAT we were doing that day - except thinking we wanted to drive a little away from the tourist areas to take a glance at how the locals lived.

So I didn't think the drivers were all that bad compared to some of the worst I've seen in and around southern cal. Not to think I'm all that great about it - but I have never hit another car or person while driving. I have hit the curb 2x though. Once after having fallen asleep on the way home very late at nite just 2 blocks from home. You've gotta be careful cuz when you think you've finally MADe it home you can't let yourself relax BEFORE you get in the door. I awaoke thinking the car was really bumpy, the steering unresponsive and the accelerator making a really wirerd and grinding noise. I had hit the curb at about 70mph missing a huge utility post by inches. Hitting it might have cost me dearly physically. I called my spouse and she came by to look at the wrecked car and trail of little parts I left by the road side. ALL I remember most was the look of near terror she has on her face as she looked at the scene with a realization I narrowly averted a major injury.

SO... I do look forward to driving CAREFULLY on ST Thomas. Last year I drove a circuit around St Maarten. We drove extensively splitting an 8 passenger van with another DIS family and did not see everything. BUt we saw A-LOT that was very much off the beaten path. We originally had 2 small compacts but saved a bunch as we walked off the ship as a tout offerred a decent deal for the single big vehicle. I would advise caution about returning to the ships' vicinity slightly early as local port traffic can be ... exciting if traffic is thick. SO plan on in town shopping at the end thus ensuring you'll get back with time to spare. And guys... if there is any traffic gettting bcak then you'll actually SAVE $ by reducing the ladies' all day shopping plans! My spouse got less time to shop and was playfully miffed at being rushed at the end about shopping constraints!

Kristin the picture is great of you two. Model material for the website absolutely!!

Deanna, You're not dressing up for Halloween?! I haven't dressed up for years(I think since right out of college). I thought this may be the perfect opportunity.
Has anyone else decided not to dress up for Halloween?

As for the luggage.....this will be the first year on a vacation that I am buying the kids their own piece of luggage. That will mean Olivia will have one suitcase and probably a small carry-on with kid play stuff. Cameron 1 suitcase. Craig 1 suitase plus a garment bag. I will have 1 big suitcase, a carryon and a garment bag. All dresses, mine and Olivias go in the garment bags. The boys put in just their dress clothes so there is room in theirs for the rest of the dresses! Most of the luggage stacks in each other and fits under the bed on board. Long story short we have lots of luggage!

The adults in our group (x's 6).........DEFINITELY NOT DRESSING UP! Well, unless you count "tipsy tourist" as a costume. I am not even sure about the kids and which ones are bringing costumes. I know the 8 year old is but the others are wavering.

I am enjoying the extra day off this weekend for a little quiet time. If only every weekend were a 3-day life could be so much easier!

Enjoy the holiday all,

Missy

Captain... Don't tease us with suggestions you and yours may join us on the 28th!! We can only hope that you have so much fun on the first cruise that you can't bear to not go again PLUS meet all your adoring fans!!

...........

I think I will get the Canon you have. Should I be looking for a specific megapixel?

Speaking of almost naked...... I am starting to stress out over a Halloween costume. There are very little choices in costumes for women. I think it would be in exteme bad taste to be "sexy SIN-derella". Can you beleive that's a costume? Any suggestions? Deanna, you're very creative. Can you think of something good?

Eating_Mouse.gif

I'm sorry....

... I did not mean to tease - as actually YOU folks are gonna be teasing US! We do have sooooo much fun on DCL that after the 15-17 sailings we've had DCL is the ONLY line / ship/ port rotation that we've rebooked 4 times in a row! Now why on earth would we do so with so many choices around the world? Well... U know the answer! SO yeah... rebooking is a temptation but not supportable as we already changed out return date and cannot easily take any more school disrupting days off. So - we'll just be hangin' on land for the weekend!

And on Digital cameras....

I don't know if Costco carries the SD Canon models I'm thinking of. Let me try and check...
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11112007&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&N=4001459&Mo=32&No=6&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=83&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&Sp=C&topnav=

998402L.jpg

.... yeah, they have the new SD700 for $359. It's a tiny powerhouse with almost everything in name: Image Stabilization <wow>, 6MP to ISO 800 (probably ISO 400 is the usable limit), a large 2.5" LCD screen, and a size comparable to a 0.8" thick credit card! It's almost too small! And the other considerations are ~ NOTE it is NOT water proof to 9.8' (let me double check) It is NOT safe in the water! My mistake!

A 2nd valid consideration at Costco is the Canon S3. It is not water proof/resistant but it features a huge and powerful 12x OPTICAL zoom lense with Optical Image stabilization! I spent $1,000+ just for 3 lenses that give me an image stabilized focal range from 20mm-300mm (15x). And you gain a flip out + rotating LCD screen! Easily one of MY FAVORITE features in a digicam. HOWEVER what it loses is the LCD screen is smaller at 2" in size and the thing is easily 3x more bulky then the SD700.... which could be viewed as a boon or bane. As the SD700 is probably way TOO small from comfortable use for some! While the S3 fits better. BUT the S3 would almost never fit in anyones' pany pocket for BREEZY carrying A-N-Y-W-H-E-R-E, and A-N-Y-T-I-M-E. If a camera is impracticle to carry all the time then you won't have it with you some of the time. Otherwise - most of the rest of the features, performance and capabilities are comparable.

998406.jpg

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons3is/

As with anything it is a trade off. I would go today with what I got, an SD series camera because I already have the big bulky "high powered" one in the 10D. If I did not though, I would probably go with the S3 as it has the things that a photographer drools over at 1/5th the cost of a comparable DSLR! And yet it probably suffers only a relatively small loss in capability. IE, 1/5th the cost and only maybe a 20% reduction in shooting power or possibly a 1-5% optical drop in performance! That makes for a bargain UNLESS you know you have to have that extra 20% power and 1-5% of optical performance (and are willing to pay for it! in cost, bulk and weight). As such, the greatest bargain is probably the SD700 but it does shave a little more off the performance envelope compared to the S3.

Buying at Costco - you can muse ... so what?!! if you're really unhappy after purchase and buy the other model! May I suggest that if you have used an SLR in the past you should very very seriously consider the new 400XTi? It is 10MP on an APS sized sensor (about 11-14x larger then the SD700 or S3) thus enabling a maximum sensitivity of ISO 1600! Usable speed is 800 or 1600! My 10D goes to ISO 3200 but it is usable to 7800-1600 and the 350/400XT series uses the same sensor and thus is only software restricted to 1600. You get all my performance without the temptation of a less than usable ISO 3200 speed. And my 10D is only a 6MP sensor! The street price on an 400XTi (do NOT buy the 350XT as the 400XTi is vastly more powerful and less money! unless they clearance the 350XT at total "give away" prices).

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0608/06082416canoneos400drebelxti.asp

The 400XTi will enable the fastest, most precise focusing; the lowest light shooting capabilities (IE,shoot indoor sports with a long lense hand held - if you're steady); and it will have the fastest shutter release and zooming! It will also end up being the bulkiest, heaviest, most expensive approach too. Dropping this camera might give you pause to skip a heart beat, whereas dropping an SD700 or S3 is less likely to evoke a financial tear. I've dropped ALL of my cameras... well, actually I've yet to drop the 10D - but everything else has been dropped.

XTi_front_withLens_B.jpg

So... if you have had an SLR in the past - and am not adverse to the size and bulk of an SLR kit... then I would urge you down this route as nothing less will satisfy you - most likely. Consider, many feel that DSLRs are fast approaching and exceeding the PRINT RESOLUTION and RESOLVING RESOLUTION of the SLR lenses!!! Now that tells you something! Yes... you have to buy good lenses on the DSLRs now made. Bad lenses show their deficiencies easily to any casual knowledgable critic. So... the dollar buys unimaginable capability and power compared to a hand span of years ago!

The model I have is the SD400 and it seems to sell for $289. SO for the extra $80 at Costco.com I would definately buy that one! And if you want real water proof capability then get the cheap DiCAPAC bag on ebay for $34+8. It's good for 30-56 feet of depth depending on how you interpret the performance claims.

Ok... gonna go now....

Hi Capt., Good to hear from you!

Kristin, What a good picture of you and Bruce!

As far as Halloween costumes, I will be dressing up for Halloween as well as the DIS trick or treat. The kids and I will also be dressing up for pirate night. Tim will not dress up at all. My Step Mother is also dressing up. I am not sure about my Dad. I got the Cinderella costume (just the reg. one not the sexy one) from Disney shopping months ago when they were on clearance. Timmy is going to be Davy Jones from pirates of the Carribean (it is not scary, he kind of looks like an octopus) Jacob is going to be Mickey Mouse.

Just a reminder to have all t-shirt and bracelet order forms to me by Sept. 15. Also remember to sign up for trick or treating by Sept. 15 as well! Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend. We have been so busy here!

Heather,
Drew doesn't know this yet, but he is going to be Captain Jack Sparrow for Pirate night. I'm sure he'll be one of many, though!

That will be cute! I was hoping to talk Timmy into being Capt Jack too, but he had his heart set on being Davy Jones. We got the costume from the Disney Store. The only reason I let him get it was due to the fact that he could wear it for pirate night and Halloween. That way I only had to pack one costume for him! Ofcourse, the thing is huge. I think I might ship all of our costumes down and then ship them back home. I have a tendancy to over pack as it is.

Florida Resident Rates have just been released for our cruise.
If anyone is a florida resident you may want to check into the discount.

Captain- Thank You. As always you've given me exactly the information I needed to make my decision. I will go to Costco this week and try to get the SD700. I am tired of my bulky Kodak.. It takes nice enough pictures but it is really a nuisance to lug around.

Heather- very cute costumes. I'm debating now if I should just go with a cute Halloween shirt. I'll figure it out in the next couple of weeks.

Can I just say I was crushed to hear about Steve Irwin. I've watched his show since the kids were little. We loved him. We swam with the stingrays at cc last year. They are so docile it must have been a really freak accident.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!!!!!!!!!

Princess....

... the Canons were on their web site. I did not go into Costco to look. SO there's no tellin' what they have on hand. I would recommend you swing by a Best Buy or Circuit city type place to HANDLE a digicams. One or the other might feel better. And remember, Costcos' liberal return policy makes a huge difference short of obvious abouse. SO resist the temptation to buy on the spot. Even thought BB will try to sell their extended warrenty with a digicam - the Costco thing gives the same effect without the expense. HOWEVER, your CC may have a bit of buyer protection too if a gold or platinum card. THose features do not cover theft from a car though and have loop-holes in coverage like swiss cheese!

SO on another note - the animation below has nothing to do with my posting content - I just thought it was kind of cool and felt someone might get some chuckles from it! Hope everyone's Labor Day holiday was a great one!

And here's some news that might save someone some change... Rental car and Taxi rates for St Thomas... I copied this from the other cruise meet for your entertainment pleasure... chuckles all around...

Does anyone know how far it is from where the cruise ship docks to the hertz or budget rental locations? are there any others?

Avis and Budget have offices across the street form the cruise ship terminal. I just booked Avis at $68.55 inc tax for the intermediate - 2nd smallest size car. I sent an email to Dependable (a loaclly owned svc that will pick up ~ and Lets Go Steelers, I asked for a quote from them for you - they want a CC to guarantee so I am reluctant to do so but am still considering them)... and I am about to check budget. Oh boy... Budget has a convertible for the same price as the Avis compact... but I reserved a full size Taurus for $56.49 including the $2.50 license tax. Saved 8 bucks and got a larger car... or put another way... Budget is $19.19 cheaper then Avis for a full size... which makes me suspicious of Budget not actually being across the street from the cruise terminal. The Budget site says they will pick up - so if this is the case then they WOULD be cheaper... and there is the possiblility of losing a little time tansiting to and from their office or expense in hopping a cab to their office if their pick up is not on the bounce. SO - inadvertantly I have a reservation now for BOTH and will wait for the Budget pickup a few minutes and if it does not materialize I'll just walk a little further and get the AVIS or go with the nearly certain touts who will try to snag my business while I am standing around and waiting for the Budget pickup.

The prices of the Avis/budget cars were as follows on St Thomas for Wed the 20th from 8AM to 4PM.

Economy (B= Daewoo Lanos) = 48.85
Compact (B=Mitsu Miarage/A=Toyota Echo) = 49.99 / 58.80
Intermediate (B=Ford Escort/A=Chev Cavalier) = 51.99 / 64.80
Standard (B=Ford Contour) = 52.99
Full Size (B=Ford Taurus/A=Chev Malibu) =53.99 / 73.80
Convertible (B=Sebring) = 64.99
MiniVAN (B=Merc Villager/A=Chev Venture) = 71.85 / 98.00
Wagon (B+Ford Focus Wagon) = $75

CDW were $19.95. My spouse always makes me consider this - and often buy it but I'm a pretty good driver having never hit another car before for a recorded accident. Now I was hit while I was in my car PARKED - and another car hit me. Does that count against me? I was not moving.

I'm gonna start checking the other islands now. ANyone knwo any good discount codes for these rental car companies.

If anyone wants to semi-tag along with our driving tour then PM me - we are just gonna do Coki, Sapphire and maybe Coral world. Here is a site for ST Thomas... http://www.vinow.com/stthomas/ and here is a site for Coral World http://www.coralworldvi.com with a $3 discount coupon making admission $15. We are mixed on going as it is mostly an aquarium and we have a gorgous aquarium in our area (Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific).... so we might do beaches and fish for outher diversions. We've done Megan's Beach 2-3x in the recent past so - even though it is a known qualtity - we've never been to other beaches and herard Sapphire has gorgous deep blue waters, clear snorkling and iguanas in abundance. I am still researching the other beaches and have nixed some of the others. One near the airport was cited as vanilla in intensity so that's one which was nixed. I expect to see 2-3 beaches, and stop for many photo ops as I am an avid photographer. Coki - we are beginning to wonder about - as someone on another site warned of Coki being very very crowded. As such... we just might motor over to red hook for a ferry to St Johns now because all of those beaches are drop dead gorgous - and represent a new adventure for us. Plus this adds the novelty of the ferry ride. We've taken the ferry from red hook before but did not do beaches then. I think the first ferry over is at 9PM from red hook - so I think it is possible but tight. SO I still have to scope out the alternatives in case we MISS the 9am ferry - and confirm there is in fact a 9AM ferry. I know the Ritz Carlton is near red hook as that is where we stayed some time ago. it would be nice to sort of visit there again for a few minutes to remininesce.

Taxi from port to Coki is $9+1 grty pp each way. SO for a family of 4 a Budget Lanos and the CW $3 coupons versus a CAB would and regular admission wouold save about $41 - offset by fuel and the use of a car all day versus a single round trip to Coki by Cab. Or $38.50 is saved in a Budget full sized Taurus. AND... Versus a triangular trip by cab (+$27) I estimate you'd save about $65.50 less fuel and gain all day use of a FULL SIZED Taurus... or save $70.50 with a Daewoo Lanos! Enough for a "fair" lunch on the island w/ alcohol... unless you just pick up a Costco pizza and salad - in which case you'd save money AND have $50 to or NO lunch and the savings covers the Coral World admission cost!

So... for $5 more I do recommend you get the full sized Taurus... as milage and cost are minimal and the larger car provides more room and a slightly greater measure of safety with size and car weight. Well... that's my 2 cents on the matter.

OK... hope this helps!

Below left is the view from the Ritz Carlton on St Thomas (I think) and on the right is the ferry from Red Hook.

The worst flight segment ever was from St Thomas to Miami - she cried terribly and in Miami I overheard someone saying "you would not believe how rought that flight was". Otherwise she's been an easy flying baby/toddler/child. That flight it rained unbelieveably when we boarded and she really disliked the run to the air stairs on American Airlines!
