I have always gotten a posititve response from my kids teachers when I tell them of our vacation(s) during school time. I usually just request that they collect the assignments and we will pick them up when we return.

I really won't take work with us though. I don't even want it until we get back.
Missy

I completely understand why you feel this way. BUT....last year Drew only missed one day all year, and it was due to illness. When he came home the next day from school with all of his make up work in addition to his regular homework, he was actually MAD at me that I kept him home the day prior. He was overwhelmed by all of the work they had last year. But all of the parents in our district seem to agree that 5th grade has a heavier workload than 6th for some reason. :confused3 I'm hoping this is true since he is starting 6th!!

So.....I'm thinking it may help him from feeling too overwhelmed by doing some of the assignments pre-cruise, and some post-cruise. And like I said, he will be missing 6 days of work (yikes!).

We usually take our vacations in the fall, but next year my son will start kindergarten, so we will have the issue of do we take him out or plan our vacation around school. I don't think kindergarten will be too bad! I was a former teacher of 2nd grade and I had several students that would miss a week of school for vacation. They usually came back and did fine! I hope that is the case with my children. We sure enjoy vacations in the fall or spring! Good luck to all of you who will be dealing with it this year! Mine will just be missing preschool!

Mine will miss two weeks of preschool wonder what they will say to that?? Oh well preschool is nothing compared to real school...not really worried am worried once they go to school and we have to worry about taking vacations and missing "real" work...I really like going to WDW in the fall.....and this is the best time for my husband to take off work that is the real issue not the kids school schedule but trying to get his schedule off......

Hope everyone is having a great week. I took the daycare today to see the new Barnyard movie. It was really cute! It had a really nice story behind it as well. Best of all it was free popcorn day! Off to get some sleep. We have a busy day tomorrow. Three doctors appt, swimming lessons and a drum lesson. I think I will be ready to colapse tomorrow night.

GDAC, what's up with our beloved John Cusack and this stalker incident?

I have been out of the touch with the real world lately and I didn't hear anything about this, what happened? Was someone stalking John Cusack? It wasn't me this time, I promise.

GDAC
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Actor John Cusack, star of such offbeat films as "Grosse Pointe Blank" and "Being John Malkovich," obtained a restraining order Tuesday against a woman he claims has been stalking him.

The order, which was signed by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge, requires 31-year-old Emily Diane Leatherman to stay at least 500 feet from Cusack, 40, as well as the actor's home, workplace, car and offices.

"This person is showing unusual interest by stalking, throwing long letters of interest over my fence in bags with rocks and screwdrivers inside (and) making unannounced visits to offices of people I work with in an attempt to meet with me," Cusack said in his restraining order application.

He said Leatherman "threatens to commit acts of violence against herself if I do not help her" and that her mail has been arriving at his home.

Representatives for Cusack declined to comment.

Poor John...........

Knock on wood we have had no problem taking kids out of school. This will be our 3rd time doing it. Fran, sends a letter to all the teachers and we get the work in advance and they always have some kind of a "cruise project" to complete when they get home. This year is DS started high school so it may be our last time doing this. Fran, being a 1st grade teacher has also never had a problem with taking a week off.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

Wow fran is lucky to be able to take the week off...My district would never allow that.......

This would be very frowned upon in my district too! Especially at the beginning of the year. I have taken off the past 2 years in September, however, I am funded by a grant and never know from year to year if I have a job or not. At this point, even though I am working now, I do not have a "regular job" for the ensuing school year. This always lets me work in my vacation as if I did not know :confused3 if I would be working.

I will finish my special ed liscensure this year and once I am working in that capacity.........vacations will have to be during vacation times. That is another reason this will probably be our last DCL cruise, it is just way out of line to pay summer rates.

Buck........I was trying to scheme up some plan on how we could meet for lunch and let the boys meet like we were college friends at OSU or something. Wouldn't that be a hoot. You know I am quite creative in my storytelling........let me know if you want to pull that off :rotfl2: .

Have a great day all.

That is SOOO funny that you should say that. I have been thinking lately about the same thing! The OSU story would be a good one. Drew would definitely buy it.

Next week Kylie has Soccer camp from 9a-12n M-F. What does Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday after 12n look like for you?

Speaking of OSU what do you think Clarett was up to toting all of those weapons? I heard on the news this morning that he was very close to the home of the guy that was scheduled to testify against him. He really was lucky he was arrested, or he could be up on murder charges now.

Beautiful day so far today. Hope everyone is enjoying nice weather!

Hope everyone is having a nice week...
We are off to the Cape this week coming up...

Have a great time!!!!

At some point I will start getting better at participating but it has been crazy since I last wrote. We are SO looking forward to our vacation and you will see why shortly.

First - Rebekah is back to her normal self after her visit to the hospital. She has a clean bill of health. Chalk it up to a bad virus that dehydrated her so badly that her body metabolism was out of wack. So, she is up and running and started school on time.

Just to make life interesting, I have accepted a new job and will be relocating from our current home in Western TN to Saint Joseph, MO. We have moved numerous times and are experienced relocation people but nothing like some interesting timing. Who knows - we may not have to worry about the issues of taking the kids out of the schools as we will be transitioning to a new school system.

For those of you who are inclined, a few prayers are always appreciated that we find a buyer for our home in a timely fashion. Kim will be alone with the four children and we hope to minimize the separation.

There was a panic from my dear mother in law regarding the entire vacation but I have reasssured her that it will be taking place!

Well, I must run.

I will try and be a more participative group member now that I can focus on some other things.

Chris

Kristin- I hope you have a great vacation!!!!

Hope everyone had a great day! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Chris- Welcome back to the boards. Sounds like you have had a lot going on. I hope things will calm down for you soon. I will keep you in my prayers.

Teri

WOW Chris things sound like they have been crazy for you all...
I will keep you and your family in our prayers...

Well we are all finally packed only thing left is for Bruce to cut the grass tomorrow and to have the house cleaned then we can leave..Planning on leaving at 5:00 sat. morning...

Thanks Terri, Hoping for nice weather...

I think my kids will have so much more fun at the beach this year..

I talked to my friend who lives in ST. Thomas today.. she told me on the day we are coming in eight cruise ships total will be there.. that wed. are their busiest days there...So make your plans now for what you are going to do while there..The beaches will be packed I am sure...
Thank goodness she confirmed with us that we are all set to go to the resort where we have honeymooned and vacationed...so it will be nice to spend the day there and use their private beach and pool...

Does anyone have anything fun planned for the weekend?????

It makes me ill when I hear about schools being nasty about family vacations. Yeah, we could go in the summer, but it would stink. Our kids will learn 3 times as much on our vacation as they will in school AND they'll still do all the work they would have if they would have been there! So, where's the problem? Somehow it must come back to funding... I could go on, and on. But I will refrain.

Anybody check the rates for our cruise recently? I just did a quick check for fun and look what you get! I punched in 2 adults and only one child 'cause I wanted to see how full the ship was getting. Check out the cat 12 rate - More than cat 4? What's up with that?

Yes, I agree whole heartedly. There is an effect on our "school report card" (Ohio) when kids are not at school. We must retain a 97ish % attendance rate to get the most "points". That is what happens when the government tries to run schools.........not the educators. I could go on, and on. But I will refrain. (I think I heard that here before?)

I have been told they price out the cat 12's because there are none available. That is not unusual to see that.

Have fun at the beach this week..........

Hi Everyone! I will be heading out this afternoon to spend the weekend at the ocean. My Mom has a place there so it only costs us the gas to get there! Timmy will have fall baseball games starting up next weekend. He will have games every weekend until we leave for the cruise, so we thought we better head to the beach while we can! Tim has to work, so it will just be the boys and I!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! I will check back in on Monday.
