Halloween Candy in the house

I need some suggestions....
If there is Halloween candy in the house I will definitely eat it. I am doing WW so there is no way that I need that candy to be around. I usually buy it early because of the good selection & sales. Then there will be the leftovers.... Anyone else have this same problem?

I live in an secured apartment building, so Lucky me, I don't have to deal with it, but the first time around for me at WW, the leader made it very clear in late September---don't buy ANY Halloween candy until I say it's okay. She gave the okay at our meeting two days before Halloween.

The other option you have is buy whatever candy is least appealing to you. Then hide it somewhere in your house. You'll be less likely to eat it then.

Good luck!

Give it to a trusted neighbor to hold until the big day, and enlist help doling out the sweet stuff, so there's no "one for you, one for me" going on! Soundls like I've been there? :p Good luck!

Keep the Faith!

We decided that we will only be buying the candy that we don't like this year. That way there is no desire to eat it before, during, or after Halloween. Any leftovers will probably go to my sister-in-law (she's 9, and would love more candy ;) ).

I just know that if I buy the good stuff, on a bad day I could be very tempted. Hope this helps! :D

We are only home about 1/2 the time on Halloween. It is our wedding Anniversary so we are not always home. This year we are going to be in Canada!!! So not a problem!!!

I have already had to deal with this, we go Halloween camping and need candy to pass out, and my kids have already trick or treated once this year and will be doing it again in 2 weeks!

What I have done is not even take the candy out of the grocery store bag--I tie the bag up (double knot) and place it above my fridge in the wayyyyy back (I need a chair to put it up and therefore to take it down). This way, I cannot see it, my kids cannot see it, and it truly is "out of sight, out of mind"!

Now, the candy they got this past weekend is in plain view, sitting in the buckets on the kitchen counter--- , but whenever I get the urge to even LOOK inside of the bucket, I find something else to do--read, take a shower, take a walk, etc--and I remind myself that I truly don't need it!

Hope this helps!

yep, buy the stuff you dont like. For me that would be anything that isnt chocolate ;)

Im not a huge candy fan but if its chocolate its for me! :)

You could always pretend you were a dentist and give out toothbrushes ;) :teeth: did anyone else have a dentist on their block growing up? lol

LOL on the toothbrushes!

I gave out raisins (among other things) this past weekend, actually my DH passed them out while I took the girls treating--he said he thought some of the kids were going to revolt!:p

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I think what I will do is but the candy as last minute as possible and then make sure I give it all away so there will be no leftovers.

the problem with giving out candy you don't like (unless you're really picky) is that if you don't like it, the kids probably won't either! I hate licorice but I'd never give it out -most kids hate the stuff too!

I vote for give it to a neighbor to hold. OR, give out coins. Dimes can't make you fat...unless they go in a vending machine!

Just another suggestion.... at Sams I saw a box of snack sized bags of microwave popcorn with a Halloween design. They are really cute and a nice alternative to candy.

That's what we will be giving this year!

I usually buy some type of candy that has either peanut butter or coconut in it. Both DH & DS like peanut butter, I dont. DH likes coconut, I dont.
Halloween this year is 6days before we leave for our MAGICal cruise. Its a Fri night but Im still not planning on taking DS out to many houses. Certainly dont need the candy around that last week!
I also spread out our Halloween activities throughout Oct so we dont have a big pile all at once.

We gave out that Sam's club popcorn a couple of times. It's a nice change from all of the candy.

I, of course, will be buying my favorite: Reese's cups, full size, for our trick-or-treaters this year. That way if there are left over, at least it's something I like! :) I'll only eat them when I'm hungry, and sometimes I'll even cut it in half and only eat half of it. Usually by the time I get around to the other half it's looking yucky from being opened and I throw it out. :) Of course, that takes will power and lots of prayer not to eat it just because it's sitting there.

My kids do not trick or treat, so we do not have the big influx of candy (especially candy that someone bought b/c they didn't like it!! turns out, almost NO ONE likes it!)

I know this probably doesn't help your original question, but I just wanted to show another side of it. Candy, no matter what it is, in and of itself, is not evil. I will not go through life never eating another Reese's cup! I've lost 15.5 pounds in 11 weeks and haven't felt the least bit deprived doing this, so it can't be all bad!

Most stores sell snack size bags of snyder's pretzels in halloween shapes. They're really cute, and a great alternative to candy.

If you absolutely have to have to candy, here's a few hints:

1.) Freeze the candy. Take it out of the freezer before you go to bed the night before halloween. This only works if you don't like frozen chocolate! :)

2.) Buy stuff you don't like. It's been mentioned, but it'll work every time!

3.) Put a healthy alternative NEXT to the candy. When you feel like eating the candy, eat the healthy alternative instead.

4.) If you feel like eating the candy, chew some gum, suck a mint, brush your teeth, or drink water. I've found that I get a LOT of water in if I drink instead of snacking.

5.) Buy your bags of candy, but also, buy 3-4 snack bars in the bulk section. DON'T open the bags, but when you want a piece, have ONE piece from the bulk stash. Count it towards whatever weight loss plan you're doing. (Unless you're doing Atkins, in which case, avoid this hint completely!!!!)

6.) If you feel like snacking, log online, come to the WISH board, and post about it. Call a weight loss buddy. Look for some HUMAN support instead of EDIBLE support.

7.) DON'T participate in halloween. I know it doesn't seem like fun, but sometimes if everything else fails, your well-being comes before the neighborhood kids.

8.) If all else fails, and you DO "fall into" the Halloween candy, DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!! EVERYBODY has bad days. It happens. Don't beat yourself up about it, and don't lay a guilt trip on yourself. Just let it go, and start your program again the next day.

Just wanted to clarify my earlier post ... I was one of the original people who mentioned only buying candy that I don't like. I am VERY picky about my food. The list of candy I don't like is longer than the one I do.

I don't like:
Twix, Butterfingers, Tootsie Rolls, Twizzlers, Skittles, 3 Musketeers, Mounds, Almond Joy, Milk Duds, etc.....

I just felt like clarifying because it seems like people don't think I shouldn't hand out candy I don't like. Thanks! :D

I won't buy all that much candy this year--last year we had very few trick or treaters and I had lots of leftovers.

Since my dh and I don't eat sugar anymore I don't think we will have a problem resisting any leftovers. My husband, especially, just feels so much better without sugar, I don't think he wants the hangover ;)

After reading some of these replys I am really considering giving out pretzel bags (From Sam's or BJ's Club). Pretzels really aren't appealing to me so my "candy in the house problem" would be solved.

How about the gift certificates that McDonald's sells for an ice cream cone? You can't eat that one! Also, as a kid I thought those were the BEST treats ever. I think Papa Gino's does something similar, and I am sure that there are other fast food chains that do this....
