Half board, is it worth it?

Hey, me again:rolleyes1

As the title suggests, I am wondering about half board vouchers. I take it we still get Breakfast included if we go with DCR, and half board would then cover lunch and dinner as well?? Please correct me if I am wrong:)

So is HB worth it, there would be 2 ad, 2ch and 2inf....although not sure if the HB option covers infants aswell.....God I am so clueless:confused:

You do get breakfast included at the DCR, its included in your hotel price. However, half board only covers one table or buffet service meal, per person booked (only if they are aged 3 or over though), and per night booked in an onsite hotel. So for example, if you are booking 3 nights stay at the DCR, you would get 3 half board vouchers per member of your party (under 3's are excluded, but under 3's eat free at buffet restaurants anyway).

Personally, I don't think half board vouchers are worth buying - unless you prefer to pay for that part of your trip in advance, and you know you would get the value out of one table/buffet service meal per day. You don't get the advertised "up to 15% discount" by buying half board vouchers in advance anymore, simply because the exchange rate, sterling to euro, is so rubbish at the moment.

half board only covers one meal per day. it does not include under 3s. they eat free in buffets anyway. personally i dont think its worth it. the only advantage is that you have your meals prepaid for.

I've noticed in the new brochure that the price for half boards states that from 1 April 2010 the benefit is up to 10% off.

I don't think you actually save anything - the only benefit for me is budgeting, eg i can have our meals paid for before we go, and i don't need to think about setting aside spending money when we're there.

For us it did take the stress out of looking for somewhere to eat every day. Because we'd paid for it before we went, it almost made it feel like it was free :confused3

i prefer to get the half board vouchers in advance as i know that i do not have to worry about overspending and that we usually only need to take some money for souveniers, drinks and lunches.
I like to plan in advance though !!

Something else I thought I'd add...

Without the vouchers we probably wouldn't have tried Walts. We'd have thought it too expensive to eat there and on all previous trips we always stuck to counter service, with the exception of Cafe Mickey and Annettes.

Walts was wonderful, and I'm so glad we have now opened the door to trying some wonderful restaurants at DLP instead of just grabbing something quick at a counter service.

That said, we are still undecided about our October trip, but I think we will probably end up with plus vouchers.

I think it probably depends on how/ when/ where you'd normally eat at Disney and also, when abouts in the year you're going.

We went for Half Board Plus and were really glad we did. I think it worked out at about £20 each a day last September (two adults). The benefits for us were:

-You had pre-paid so didn't have to worry about budgeting for food
-The vouchers entitle you to a three-course meal and a drink (or a buffet), so you could have a proper sit-down meal in the evening and take your time over it without worrying about whether you could afford 1, 2 or 3 courses! This was particularly good because the parks closed at 6/7 in September so it gave us something to do other than spend our money in the bars (quite expensive!) or sit in the room watching tv. That said, as two adults we didn't have children that would be tired early - I don't know whether you'd have so much of a free evening with kids!
-We could eat in restaurants we'd not have even bothered looking at otherwise - Walt's, Blue Lagoon, the Steakhouse, the NPB buffett.
-They seemed incredibly good value for money at that time, especially if you're planning on having more than one course and eating off a regular menu. As you get vouchers per night, not per day, and we were leaving late on our last day we ate one meal without vouchers in Annette's. I think we paid about €17 for just a burger and a drink which was nice, but not quite as good as the food we had elsewhere and we were scouring the menu for the cheaper options, something I hate doing!
-They're pre-paid: As others have said, it gets rid of the worry of budgeting and not knowing quite how much you might spend when you get to the resort.

There are some negatives to them though:
-You get quite a restricted menu choice if you're planning on eating off the specific menus for the vouchers (you can use them at face value but you wouldn't really save any money with the current exchange rate). I think there was about 3 options for each course. Neither my boyfriend and I are particularly fussy so we didn't have any problem with this, but if you're choosy then they might not be so good for you (or you'd want to stick to the buffets). I don't know if the children's menu would be so restricted though? And if you go for Premium you get a lot more of a choice ... but you pay for it!
-The restaurant restrictions: again we were fine with this as we only ate there for four nights and we ate early enough to eat in the park twice. However if you were staying for much longer when the park was closing early then you'd probably find yourself repeating restaurants on the Plus vouchers and certainly on the Standard! Though you can use them at face value in other restaurants, but you're not getting the most of them that way.
-Similar to the above, you can't use them in non-Disney owned restaurants (like Planet Hollywood or Rainforest Café) so if those are some of your favourites then that might effect your decision.
-You can eat for cheaper elsewhere: counter service is undeniably cheaper, or if you don't plan on having more than one course and a drink and don't mind what you eat then they're probably not worth it. We could probably have spent less than we spent on the vouchers and had a half-decent meal in Planet Hollywood, Annette's etc (one course + a drink anyway) so if you just eat because you have to eat then again it might be worth reconsidering.

Also we didn't have any experience of using vouchers with kids so I'm not sure what the value for money is like for them?

Can I just add that when you're totting up how much you might need for meals, you probably won't want lunch and dinner.
The only time we've done both was wth the free meals offer and to be honest it felt as though we were always eating, in fact we were eating for the sake of it at times and I know we weren't the only ones to feel this way.

If you're staying at the DCR, I assume you're driving, so you'll have room to take some snacks, cereal bars, crisp, fresh fruit to snack on oh and a bottle of fruit squash, if the kids like that, impossible to find over there.

At the moment the only reason I'd advocate adding HB is just so that you know that you've one meal a day paid for and can take this away from your spending money budget, there really isn't any other benefit.

i have to agree. we also had the free lunch vouchers and while i did think it was a great offer i could have done without lunch most days. normally we would eat our main meal at lunch and the most i would eat after that is maybe a cheeseburger from mcdonalds after the park closed.

The prices are going up by the time I go in october....think its £20 for the cheapest! I was paying £13 not so long ago....so no I think its a rip off now!..

Actually trying to rememeber if I saw it on the internet or the wifie on the phone told me???????? Please don't quote me on that though just incase I dreamt it!:rotfl:

I third that - we went during the free meals and there was just so much food! lol! We ended up skipping the breakfast rush at Santa fe so we were actually hungry for lunch! Some days we had breakfast then just used out lunch voucher for a cake and coffee just to have a break and sit down and use up the voucher. That said it was great to not have to budget and worry about the cost :)

£20 for standard....mmmmmm bargain...NOT!

I won't be bothering with it next time.

In fact I think we'll be making use of the Pizza Planet Buffet at what 15 euros a head most of the days and planning one special meal, would love it to be at Inventions, although I will have to hide the bill from OH, he almost passed out in Frankie & Bennys the other evening and the bill there was "only" £80, but I'm thinking if we don't do Inventions this visit next time I'll have to pay for 4 adults :scared1:

poor OH, I think I would have fainted too!!...that pizza planet prices seem ok eh? Might have to try that out, do you think they will be open EVERY day?...we could eat there then grab a burger/sandwich at night?

Hi All, we always use the vouchers usually the half board plus. I have always found them a huge saving but then I have a family of 7 and we are BIG eaters!

Last year when we were in DLRP for example we ate in the Chicago Steak House and we were offered the menu which was 33euros for a set meal....so we saved immediatly...plus it takes the worry out of managing money on holiday, especially if there are a few of you. You can relax and know that you can eat totally relaxed not worried about the bill. I suppose it depends where you choose to eat, it wouldn't be so much of a saving in the cheaper restaurants ;).

Also as others have said, we never do three meals, only breakfast and evening dinner, might stop in Salon Mickey for a coffee and pastry , or last year we took to having coffees in the DLH while the parade was on  .

You can now exchange them or use them as part payment for Buffalo Bills and sometimes in the past they have let us double them up for Auberge de Cendrillon for example and once for Inventions [once they also said "no"].

Have a look at the menus on the DLP food guide http://www.dlpfoodguide.com/
and at where the various vouchers can be used and then try to decide how much you will spend on food and take it from there....Good Luck, I love the vouchers and I am getting premium for one room on our holiday and plus for the other so we can all eat in Inventions, California Grill or maybe Walts or Blue Lagoon and then some cheaper ones that we like i.e. Chicago Steak House.

I hope that it'll be open a lot more frequently than it has been in the past, I think the price is really good it includes a drink too and the kids meal is around the 6 euros mark, can't be bad, if the foods on par with Pizza Hut I'll be happy. :)
