:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 60 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 33 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter). We have two doggies, one son (Gage) who is two and are expecting our second this coming January. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for United Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and two full marathons including the Goofy Challenge. My favorite distance is the half marathon and I hope that after the baby I can train to reach my goal of a sub 2 hour race. Another long distance goal of mine is to complete a 50K and eventually maybe a 50 miler.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

rubato, aka Tandy - Hi. My name is Tandy and I’m the mother of a fabulous 12 year old preteen son. :lovestruc I’ve been married to Frank (a non runner) for 18 years. I’m a full time student, going back to school to become a nurse. I have always run for fitness, but it wasn’t until my impending
40th birthday that I decided to become a distance runner. I love the miles and can’t wait to run my first ultra-marathon someday.

RunRookie, aka Rick - My name is Rick and I live in Crystal Lake, IL. I am married with three children (one 13yr old still at home). I am a new runner, having started in April 2011. My initial goals were to lose 160 pounds, improve my overall fitness, and to live a healthier lifestyle. Since then, I have run 15 races and lost 110 pounds! I am a big fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci-Fi in general, Disney, photography, music, movies, and technology/gadgets. And I keep a fitness blog at rickpeete.squarespace.com.

RadioFanatic, aka KimberlyI'm 39 mama of an almost 4 year old boy, will be 40 by the race; and was goaded into doing this past 1/2 by friends who knew I could do it although I hadn't run a minute in my life. I started training on May 1, 2011 by doing couch to 5k and the first day was miserable where even running that minute made me want to die. Since then, I've lost 70 pounds, ran the whole 1/2 and am looking forward to my new goal. I'm planning on doing a 1/2 in april and in september, my first full in october here locally and some other 10k and 15k runs in between and my second and most exciting full on the 20th anniversary at disney!

KippWade, aka Kipp - I currently live in Indianapolis, Indiana. My doctors visit in January of 2011 had me at my heaviest weight ever, 282 pounds. It was at this point that I told myself this has to stop. Before moving to Indianapolis in September 2010, I worked with a guy that ran. He told me a lot about it and I had mentioned that I'd had some Disney friends say that we should try a run at Disney World. He convinced me that even I could do it. It took me until March of 2011 to finally start in with the C25K plan. I registered for the 2012 WDW 1/2 in April and committed myself to running. I progressed to Bridge to 10K and then Novice 1/2 Marathon Training by Hal Higdon. Since that doctors visit, I've managed to loose 40 pounds of the 100 I want to loose.

tink06, aka - Stacey - I'm from NY (originally Jersey, but moved to NY with hubby) and have one cool DD who will be 10 in August. I started my weightloss journey back in Dec '04, was doing great, and then started the C25K in '06. I then found Disney Races, and signed up for the Marathon in '08 (I think?) I got to mile 18 and was cut off. Then I did the Minnie 15k, and got my bling. Followed by the Half in '09, and the Princess. Completed the SpaceCoast half later that same year (time was awful, but it was done) and attempted the full in '10. Really undertrained, bad weather, and screaming hip pain - got just past the halfway point and found myself once again on the bus! So... made myself a promise that for the 20th anniversary, I would make the 3rd time a charm and get that Mickey Medal once and for all! So I'm on a mission to shed some unwanted pounds, and get back into shape, so that I can start Marathon training come August! I will succeed this time, and appreciate the kick in the pants and encouragement for you all!

EMHDad, aka Tom - I am Tom, 32yo. My birthday is 2/24/80. I have been married 9 years, 2 kids (ds6, ds3). I live in northwestern IL (a town of 500ppl). I am a Pastor. I used to run in high school and college, but got out of the habit since. I have been running off and on over the past 2 years, but have been sidetracked by back issues, a move, and the winter cold. I have started back up recently. I am registered for a 10k Mud Run (35 obstacles) on 9/29/12. If that goes well, I am signing up for a half marathon(my first) on 11/03/12. I am confident I can do so, because I am already on a half marathon training schedule that the 10k fits into. During all of my previous training I never committed to a race (even a 5k). This time, I have put my money where my mouth is on the 10k mud run, and I have a partner entered in the run as well. That is very strong motivation!

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Thanks for the new thread!

Kim - Good to see you again!

AFM - We had fun yesterday helping set up a cyclocross course, it involved a bit of walking. I got to be a course marshall for the kids race. Scott was official race photographer.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Here's an update of my race...

Well, this was the first greater than 5k race of my life. The Gladiator Assault Challenge was a 7 mile(7.15 miles exactly) mud run/obstacle course on a ski slope.

My heat started a 11:00am. The race begain ontop of the mountain. We immediately ran down the mountain and into 3 mud pit mounds. (Covered in mud at this point.) Then we had to climb a narrow path back up the mountain. The path was so steep that you basically had to walk with your hands and feet. 3 minutes into the race I am huffing and puffing. lol

Then I started running on the trail with more mud in the path. This whole even was on a ski slope. So there was A LOT of up and down, left and right in the running. After about a mile and half the trail looped back to the main area and the next bulk of obstacles.

The first was an 8' flat wall. I had to run and jump and pull myself over the wall. Then tire stepping and then another 8' flat wall. Then I ran a twisted path down a hill and hill a cargo net mokey bars over a mud pit. (So much harder than regular monkey bars, because when you grab one spot the net is pulled down and the next sport goes a little higher.) Afterward I entered a tunnel no higher than 12" and had to crawl about 100 feet with a 90 degree turn in the middle.

I ran back up the hill to the first obstacle that actually produced fear in me. It was a 20-25' cargo net between two trees. The net moved and I do not do heights well. lol However, I just sucked it up and did it. Then a giant downhill slip n slide to a 15' a-frame cargo net. Then under the a-frame through a mup pit. Then back up the hill to run through and jump over fire. Awesome! That batch of obstacles ended with a steep climb up a hill requiring a rope.

Now I am back on trails out into the woods. While out there I hit more obstacles: a tube that dumps into a small pond, crawling through mud under barbed wire, and wading through a lake. Again more hills and turns. At some spots the path is hardly there with logs and trees and branches in the way. By the time I finish this loop I have run about 4.5 miles.

The next batch of obstacles include: carrying a log about 40-50 yards, sliding down another giant slide n slide, and then another fear inducing obstacle. I had to climb a large platform(about 12' high) and jump into a freezing lake. Scary, but so much fun. Another 15' a frame, another mud pit and I begin my 3 loop into the forest. This part is called the 2 mile sprint. What it actually is basically is a bike path that is no wider than about 24" at any part and has more ups and downs and twists and turns than everything else to that point. In the middle of this is two 10' mud pits. I expected them to be waist deep. The mud pits went passed my chest and I barely got out!

I come out of the 3rd loop and have run 7 miles. I am done! Nope, not yet. lol I now have to walk over a stream on a wooden pole. Then climb over a 2x4" ladder. My legs are so cramping I almost couldn't get over. Through A long tube into another, but longer mud pit with barbed wire.

Finished in 2:21:00. I woke up Sunday morning and my WHOLE body hurt. EVERYWHERE!!! At this point, its just my quads. (Stairs are still hard lol) Still, I am now a GLADIATOR!!!

Mud Runs are Awesome!

BTW, how was the ToT race? I hope it went well for you guys. I would love to hear about it!

Rick, good luck in Chicago. You will be in my prayers for a safe and good race.

Thanks! Your race sounds way too much fun!!!! What a cool experience!!

Wahooo new thread maybe I can keep up if I start now, I chat with so many of you through other networks I sometimes forget to come here and check in.

Hope everyone has a awesome weekend.

Got my 9M in so goofy training is on course!!!! However, this weekend is suppose to be 10M but I think I will pull back to 8 as I have a sore foot today and I have a half on Oct 14th and don't want to go into that with my foot sore. Then will be back to regular training, i think this foot is a one off thing I was walking in some uneven sidewalks all on the right side and that what foot hurts.

With Vicky's help I have adjusted my food plan and I have added some strenght and core exercises to my goofy plan so hopefully you will all see a new and improved Kim in January:cheer2:

Hi all

Tom: sounds like an awesome experience, congrats on completing your longest race to date.

Rick: It must be pretty exciting less than a week away! In case I don’t get around to posting again this week, good vibes/prayers/ best wishes from me to you! How is your taper going btw? I am a week behind you and truthfully, while I thought I would enjoy the reduction in mileage I am finding it a bit uncomfortable…like I want to go out and run more. But I know I shouldn’t! I think I will completely stir crazy this time next week!

Kim: Good idea with the strength and especially core workouts. I have had a couple different sub-3hr marathoners stress the importance of a strong core in endurance events.

To all ToT runners: I heard it was pretty hot and humid, but I hope you all had a great time!

AFM: My September totals are in and even though I was tapering last week, I managed to put in 210 miles for the month. Hopefully it all pays off on the 14th! I still debating what my goal time and pace should be, probably have to wait until race day and see what the weather is like, but at this point as long as the first number I see is “3”, I think I be extremely happy.

Although WDW race weekend has kind of been on the backburner for me recently, which I am positive will change drastically after my marathon, I just realized it is only 100 days away…it will be here before we know it!

Hope everyone has a great week,
Robbie

.

I am getting very excited! I appreciate your prayers and encouragement! I will be drawing on the support from all my WISH friends to keep me smiling and energized on Sunday. :)

I have enjoyed the Taper (for the most part). It is good to let the body rest but geez, my mind is always thinking about the race! Lol. I guess that is a normal part of my taper madness.

You ran 200+ miles in September? Holy Cow!!! I was happy with running 102... :)

Just finished my strenght training for today but I don't like the core tape I was using so would appreciate your favorite ab/core exercises.

Rick is there anyway we can track you on Sunday? Would like to run virtually with you.

Robbie: 210 Miles:cheer2: Wow that is awesome!!!!

Off to hit the showers before work. have a great day everyone!!!

Awesome, so excited for you!!!!! You are going to rock it out my friend:goodvibes

Good Morning Team!

Kim - Hope your foot feels better soon! Good luck with your goofy plan! Please share any good core exercises with us.

Rick - Let me add my best wishes to you for Chicago also!

Tom - Great race report!

Robbie - good to see you back!

AFM - Yesterday was busy getting ready for the visit from Scott’s folks today, did manage a dog walk, but my knees are very unhappy with no bike rides lately. I may be MIA for the next few days, have good ones all!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Sorry about not checking in for a while but my life is going through one of it's frequent spells of total choas.

I had a stressful trip to the World, I couldn't even wear a shoe my foot was hurting so bad when I walked so the whole trip was spent in flip flops. I've been working the rehab exercises in the pool every day and I'm finally starting to see day light. I have the State Trials this Saturday and I'm just doing the 1500m race walk and hoping for the best. Injuries Suck!

I will start the slow build up for the January Marathon on Monday if I continue to improve. I can't stand another set back. This achillies injury has been a up and down ride, just as I think I'm getting better, I'll crash again. The pool has been working and hopefully will be the answer to finally being healed.

We did the American Idol Experience this trip and highly recommend it. We did a whole day of it since it was raining the entire day. We had some rain everyday,

Have a great week everyone.

Dave

Wow... October already.

I've been sidelined pretty much for the past couple of weeks. After my last long run I started to feel a little pain in my left heel. I stopped jogging for a few days and everything seemed to be better when I started back up.

The last jog I went for was last Wednesday on the treadmill and evreything at that time felt great. Then the next morning not so much.

So I've been rubbing it down and have been doing stretching and resistance band flexing.

I'm thinking that my last long run I did had way too many hills and I've overworked the achilles. I'm back to feeling much better, but I'm only going to try and do some walking on the treadmill tomorrow to see how it goes.

The bad side effect of not running the past 2 weeks? A gain of 3 pounds! EEEK! It's my fault for not cutting back the food intake while cutting back the jogging. Dad on the other hand... his modified Atkins diet is working quite well for him and he's managed to drop 7 pounds in the past few weeks! (Modified due to doctors orders he not cut carbs too much, fruits okay, starches not good).

I'm really beginning to stress, because the Indy Monumental Half with Rick is just a month away and I'm worried that I'm not going to do well. Then I worry since I'm worrying about that, I'll try to push it too hard when I do feel up to jogging again that I'll make it worse going into it and possibly ruining my build up for Marathon Weekend! :worried:

Oh, and work is totally sucking right now too.

On the bright side... in less than 2 months I'll be in Disney World for Vacation regardless of what happens in the next month :)

Hi team! Sorry I've been MIA lately - October is year-end at my company so there's a lot of extra work. I've been making time to go running and workout but haven't had much of a chance to blog or post here. :(

Kipp - Don't worry you still have time before your half! Which training plan are you following and which week are you suppose to be in? You can always modify it and remember that it's better to be undertrained and uninjured. Sorry to hear about the weight gain. Once you hit the road again, it will be gone again in no time I'm sure!

Dave - Sorry to hear about your foot :( Have you tried Crocs before? I love wearing those when my other shoes get uncomfortable. They look funny but it doesn't bother me. Did you sing at American Idol? Good luck this weekend :)

Lynn - Hope you have a good visit with Scott's parents and that you don't have to stress too much with preparations. Lots of pixiedust: for your knees! I hope they feel better soon.

Kim - Will get those recipes out to you shortly! Sorry work has been a bit crazy :upsidedow Any plans for the long weekend? I wouldn't say that I have a "favourite" core exercise :rotfl: but I find the ones that work me the hardest are planks and side planks, Woodchoppers, crunches on a stability ball and bridges. If you find planks hard, start off with the bird/dog.

Robbie - Wow! 210 miles is really impressive! Here's hoping you get some awesome weather so that you'll be able to hit a sub 4:00 time!

Rick - You must be so excited for your full this weekend! I'll be tracking you and thinking good thoughts for you :)

Tom - Awesome RR! It sounds like a tough course! Are you allowed to skip any of the obstacles if you feel like you can't do them? I don't know if I'd want to jump into the lake if it was that cold yikes!

AFM - Work has been busy what else is new? But I've been managing to get out for my running. I fell behind my training schedule for MCM so I think the longest run I'll get in is 17 miles. We'll see how that goes. My weekday runs have been going pretty well and eating has been more or less good. It might fall off this weekend a bit since it's Thanksgiving and my birthday is on Saturday. Unfortunately, I tend to do my LR on Saturday so it looks like I'll be aiming for a 15 miler that day. Oh well, at least I won't have to feel guilty eating sweets :)

Oh I happened to talk to a photographer who's done work at marathons. I asked him how they decide which racers to photograph when there are big groups. He said they shoot the group and then they'll get closeups of the people on the left and the right of the group. They're not really suppose to try and pick out individual runners. I don't think this is the case when running at Disney but I'm not sure. I usually run more toward the middle which would explain why I get cut off in photos LOL

Ok back to the salt mines :upsidedow

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - The visit with Scott’s parents went well, we saw them off early this morning, as the cold weather set in, but, at least, no rain or snow for their trip home (they are driving back to Missouri). I did get down on the spin bike yesterday which helped the knees, I need to do it every day!

Dave - Sorry to here your trip to WDW was so painful, hope your foot feels better soon, and Pixie Dust for your race on Saturday!

Kipp - Pixie Dust for your injury, hope it heals soon!

AFM - It has gotten really cold here - yesterdays high was in the 70’s, today it will be in the 40’s!!!!!. The snow that was predicted has held off, now predicted on Friday night. We got the sprinkler system blown out yesterday, now we will have to hand water trees and bushes until spring. I did get a spin bike session in yesterday, the knees thanked me.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hey All! I'm sure you have forgotten me bc I disappeared for so long, but thankfully, I've kept up with most of you through FB. Things have been really crazy that I haven't had time for anything it seems.

Since I last posted, I went away the last week of august to Rehoboth Beach for vacation with my parents, dh and son. As usual, we had a blast and I enjoyed running on the boardwalk - much nicer than my usual run back home. When we got home it was straight into getting my son started with school and I had three out of town trials to do through work and I managed to rope myself into chairing a gala committe which had the gala on 9/15. The next morning, I ran a half marathon, my third this year. It was the Saratoga Springs Palio - the great thing about that was the 5k Palio was my very first race ever last year and now I'm doing the 1/2! I was about 2 minute slower than my best time, but it was a much hillier race than the one I PR'd on. Then it was back to my trial schedule.

And through all this, I've been training for my first marathon which is this sunday. :scared::scared::scared: I've had my ups and downs in training to be honest. I've discovered I don't like it! In prep, I ran a 15, 17, 18 and 3 20 mile runs. I've been going down the past few weeks. after the 1/2 on 9/16, I've done a 12 mile and many many 5 miles. My last run was this past tuesday - I was going to run wednesday but it was pouring and I think I'm getting a cold. To add to that, it's 60% chance of rain sunday.

I'm very worried I peaked too early, but honestly I just wasn't into running those very long distances anymore. It would have been different if I had had a 20 mile race like Rick had (so jealous Rick!) but all my runs have been alone and VERY early in teh morning (starting at 4:30 am). It got to the point where I was dreading my weekends bc I knew i had a long run. So I'm hoping the fact that I've run three different 20 mile runs will help me, even though they were a bit earlier than I would have liked.

I've also decided that after this and the disney marathon, I'm not doing any more marathons - I'm retiring from it. It just is too stressful trying to find the time to run with my crazy work schedule and my four year old. I'll still run the 1/2's though as they are much more doable! I don't want to quit running since it has helped me so much physically and mentally, but the long runs were making me not like it which I don't want to have happen!

So anyway, I'm totally panicking about sunday. I know I can finish - it's just the timing. I have to complete it in 5.5 hours. They are shutting it down then. My 1/2 are about 2:20; however, who knows how tired I'll be or if the rain will slow me down or if this stupid cold will make me slower. and it's just the fear of the unknown! my dh is sick of hearing me talk about it. I've been resting since tuesday, I have my sports beans and gatorade ready, now just trying to figure out what the heck I'll wear if it rains - any suggestions? oh, and not just rain, but only high of 52 for the day as well - so cold rain!

Okay, enough about me, it's so good to be back in contact with all of you and I hope all are well. I promise to be back on this more often!
