Hakuna Matata - Spooky October

Went on a 15 mile training run yesterday for the first time and i believe i hurt myself. First 5 miles was ok, 2nd 5 miles my right knee started to hurt, 3rd 5 miles my right ankle was in pain. I just walk and run but walk most of the time. I think for my plan of attack on the goofy is first 1/2 marathon is going to be walk 1 mile and run 1 mile just to take it easy. For the full i am going to actually do the same thing. Woke up this morning with my left knee where the joints connect to each other hurts. I think i can say that running on pavement really makes an impact on the joints. I land on my midfoot when i run. I think i will stop running any more long runs until the event.

My fourth half is in the books! The weather was perfect for the Myrtle Beach mini. There were a few minor issues at the start line (not enough porta potties or corral space) but nothing that negatively impacted me since I am a back of the packer and I didn't over hydrate;). The course was flat and the "hill" mentioned by other runners was a small incline at the end. The only part of the course that I didn't like was the curvy pavement for mile 12. That was actually a wide walkway leading to the boardwalk. Of course, at that point you are running beside the ocean so the view is fantastic! I met fellow WISHer, Wendy Sibley, in her fabulous pink cowgirl hat on the course. Blue Moon Brewery was a sponsor so there was plenty of free beer at the finish. I didn't feel tired until mile 11 and set a new PR by 12 minutes!.:cool1: I'm still a slow runner though and that has me rethinking my decision to do the full in January. I certainly can't have a time goal for the race, only the goal to finish.

Hung: I agree, running on pavement is a killer! What training plan are you following?

How is everyone else feeling?

Congratulations on your success! I am in no training plan. I am just doing my own and not doing so well at it. I wanted to do a 20 mile run but geez after the 15. I dont think i will even do another 15 unless i walk after 10 miles. I am still in pain especially the day after. Dont worry i am also a slow runner. Constantly needing to stretch cause of ankle pain. Not looking forward to the Goofy. We are all looking just to finish the race in January.

Hung: Too bad that long runs on pavement cause so much pain. Does treadmill running hurt as well? Is that an option? Aside from that, I think you can do other things to help ensure Goofy is not a death march. Obviously running would be optimal, but since that causes too much pain, it may do you good to do (very) long brisk walks so your feet and legs get better conditioned for 39.3 miles. You also need to think about your cardio…maybe you could spend time on the bike (stationary or otherwise). I have a friend who spent a lot of time biking before jumping into running this year…he had a surprisingly high level of endurance after making the switch.

Elizabeth: Congratulations on your PR! I used to feel the full marathon as a daunting prospect as well. I slowly built my long runs up and it didn’t seem as bad. You are going in right attitude – just to finish. I am certainly not running for time either...I am paying the most I ever spent on a race before, I want to make sure I get my money’s worth and take my good ole time. I think you will find many, if not most people doing the WDW marathon have the same line of thinking.

AFM: A week after my full, I raced again yesterday. It was race weekend in Moncton, New Brunswick (about 2 hours from my town), and we were in town anyways so I decided to do their 10K race. Despite me doing several half marathons and 5k races this year, this was actually my first 10k race since my very first race ever in 2009. I finished at 47:42 and placed 31 out of 817 (although my placement is misleading as I am pretty sure they lumped all the walkers in with the runners in the result).

Now that I have had my post-marathon week off, it time to get back to my training for Goofy. I was going to just pick up the final 11 weeks of my marathon program, but in light of me deciding to not have any time goals (and feeling a bit burnt out frankly), I am thinking of switching it around to do more easy miles and less speed and hill work. I know there are others (Rick, Vicky, Kimberley) who ran or are going to run full marathons this fall. How are you planning on training for WDW after your fall marathon?

Hope everyone has a great week,
Robbie

Thanks Robbie,

I do have access to a treadmill at my gym but i prefer the outdoors and running outside on the pavement is as close to the real event. Maybe i'll be training 5 miles at a time would help.

Robbie, I had my marathon on 10/7. I took two weeks off per dh's request/demand to make sure I was fine. First run back today (5 miles). My long runs will start on 11/11 with a 15k and then go up 13, 15, 17, 18 20 on 12/29 and then down from there.

Well, I am taking October easy to fully recover from my first Full. This will be my first 'normal' training week mileage and effort wise. Last week I ran 15 miles. This week will be 22 miles.

Then, I am running a Half on Nov 3rd. After that, my Goofy training will begin with Long Runs of 15, 6, 13, 16, 12, 17, and 18. I plan on two weekends in December where I will run 10 miles on Saturday, followed by the Long Run on Sunday (so I can have the experience of running on tired legs in Sunday). Taper will start on Dec 23rd so no 20-miler this time around. I figure the two 'back-to-back runs will be sufficient.

I hope everything's ok with DH

Good morning, everyone,

Thanks for the encouragement about the marathon, Robbie and Rick. My fears about the race are still a bit out of control but I'm working to refocus that energy into my training.

Robbie:
Glad you had a good race.:thumbsup2 I remember you ramped up your weekly mileage quite a bit (and with much success). What is your weekly mileage now?

Hung: Since I find pavement running hard on the joints too, I do my shorter runs on the treadmill and save my long run for the road. I also agree with Robbie that some cross training would help with your endurance without stressing the joints. I tried splitting up my runs in smaller increments when recovering from injury and found that 2 shorter runs--doing 1 in the morning and 1 at night--was the best. Vicky posted a good article about splitting the long run a few months ago; perhaps she still has the link and can repost. Here are a couple more: http://www.active.com/running/Articles/Should-You-Split-Your-Long-Run.htm and http://www.runningplanet.com/training/splitting-your-long-run.html. Good luck with figuring out what works best for you.

Kimberly: I hope that one of your b-day presents is that DH came through surgery well.

AFM:
I'm headed out for the gym. I have a run this morning and another tomorrow. 14 miles this weekend.

Robbie:[/B] Glad you had a good race.:thumbsup2 I remember you ramped up your weekly mileage quite a bit (and with much success). What is your weekly mileage now?

I think I am going to shoot for low 40's this week, and 40 to low 50s until WDW. But as I previously said, more easy miles with little speedwork. Also, not sure if you are, but I am doing Goofy, so I am doing back to back weekend long-ish runs, which is obviously adding to my weekly totals.

Kimberley: Happy Birthday!

Rick: Nice plan! I agree my Sunday long runs are going to be trimmed too, but think I still may get at least one 20 miler in

Vicky- Good luck with your marathon this weekend!

AFM: Pretty sore today. Went to a circuit weight training class last night. It was my first time doing any kind of resistance training since the spring when I started dedicating all my time to running. Should have known better!

Hope everyone has a great rest of week.

Hi everyone!

Robbie - Thanks! I'm looking forward to DC! To answer your question about Goofy, I think I'll probably take a week off from running when I get back. Hopefully I won't have destroyed my ankle too badly. I'll jump back in and try to work my way up to a LR of 17-20 miles sometime before January. I plan to go easier on the full in January - I look at it as running from photo op to photo op LOL Keep up with the resistance training! I find it really helpful :)

Elizabeth - Congrats on Myrtle Beach! I saw Wendy posting pics of the medal on line. Awesome! I'll have to do put that on my to run list :)

I'll have to go and look for that article. Was it the one where it was talking about dividing your total mileage evenly over the week? So if your training plan called for you to run 30 miles over the week for example, you could divide that over 5 days and run 6 miles each day?

I'm not a fan of pavement either - I'm usually on the streets but it's a little scary at night sometimes.

Rick - Sounds like a pretty solid plan to me. You'll still have mileage from your full anyway :)

Hung - Sorry to hear about the ankle pain. I know what that's like. Have you been to a physio or the doctor to check it out? I've had ART and acupuncture done on mine in the past. Mine was a sprain. The best treatment really is rest. I also ice when I come back from running, I tape my ankle and keep it in a compression sleeve the rest of the time. Take it easy if your joints hurt.

I use Hal Higdon's marathon novice 2 training plan for Goofy. To get the b2b runs, I take the LR, divide that in 2 and run that on Sunday. So for example if the LR this week is 18 - I'd run 18 on Saturday and then 9 on Sunday.

Kimberly - Hope everything is okay with DH!

AFM - I've been busy at work and now I'm busy getting ready to leave on Friday. I would have liked to get in more training but it was a fine balance between mileage and injury and I'd rather go into a race undertrained. I've done a bunch of shorter runs lately and felt pretty good afterward - I tried going a bit slower on those. I guess I'll see what happens Sunday.

For those of you who are interested - there's an order for WISH shirts taking place right now. The info to order is posted on a sticky at the top of the main board. The shirts aren't mandatory so don't feel like you're obligated to get one. They are nice to have at Disney because people will recognize and cheer for you :)

Oh and I got the iPhone 5 - it's soooo much faster! I don't like the headphone jack on the bottom of the phone though LOL

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Thanks! I'm waiting now for his first of two surgeries to be completed.

Good morning, everyone,

Vicky: Enjoy your race this weekend. I love DC; are you staying in the city? Can't wait to read about it.

Kimberly: Glad to hear that DH's first surgery went well. Hope the same for the gall bladder procedure. Pixie dust to you; I know this must be difficult to deal with so suddenly.

Robbie: No, I'm not doing Goofy. This will be my first marathon if I don't transfer to the half.

AFM: Still thinking about the full in January. I started running to get back into shape and to do something I enjoy for myself. Lately, my training for the full is more stressful than stress-releasing. I've really got to decide why I want to do the full, will I have fun out there, and if I have enough training to do it. If I don't do the full then I've got a chance to register with a team for the half. I can defer the full race until next year. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing you all in January!

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

LOL Good luck to me! Looks like I'm the only one racing this weekend!

October
28 - Marine Corps Marathon, Washington, DC - Vicky

Hello again,

I was able to transfer my registration from full to half. I feel better about my decision and I'm looking forward to January again. I'll keep training with the marathon training schedule in hopes that I continue to improve my speed and endurance. I feeling so good about the half that I may register myself and my girls for the 5k now too.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

I have a 5k this morning; heading out in a bit for the local Color Me Rad Run with my BFF to celebrate our birthdays. Should be fun!

Good luck to Vicky and to anyone else running this weekend!

Enjoy your run and also good luck Vicky!!!! Kick rear to all the runners! I'm getting nervous bc I've only run once-5 miles-in the past three weeks since my marathon. I started back Monday and then all the craziness happened with my husband who finally came home yesterday. Going to start back up tomorrow. Do you guys think I still have enough time to train for disney's marathon? I'm doing a 15k on 11/11 and going up from there with training runs of 13, 15, 17, 18 and finishing with a 20 on 12/29 then tapering-do you think this is enough?

Absolutely. You would not have lost much of your marathon fitness level in the past two weeks. I think your plan is good. You will be fine-tuned for the Mickey in 2013. :)
