Mike's Wine and Dine Race Report:
I had a great time at the race and over the weekend at WDW! It started with my flight down to Orlando from Chicago. I arrived at my departure gate to find it decorated to the max with a huge balloon arch and kids everywhere. Carts were dropping off more kids, honking there horns, and people were clapping for the kids. It turned out to be a make a WISH foundation flight for physically challenged children. They even had a magician and a guy dressed up as a wizard. They really did it up well and it was a fun send off for my first half marathon.
The plane ride and magical express went smooth. After checking into my resort at All Star Music and dropping my bags I headed over to the expo for packet pick up and I bought a ton of shirts and a couple of pilsner glasses with the race design on them. I tried updating my corral but didn't make the cut off time for A, so B it was going to be. I hung out for a while and listened to the race talks going on, and headed back to my room with my newly purchased bounty.
Ate dinner at the resort and crashed in my room. I woke up at 430 in the morning and went for a dip in the pool all by myself. The water was cold! Then I showered and had breakfast. I stuck with bagels and yogurt and resisted getting pancakes and heavy stuff as the race was coming up that night. Then it was off to the early park opening of Hollywood Studios and the rope drop.
At the Studios I was waiting to ride Toy Story Mania and got to talk to a fellow WISHER who stopped me because I was wearing one of my WISH shirts. Her name was Kim and she was also running the race. We talked for awhile and went on the ride together. Already feeling the WISH good vibes! We parted ways after the ride and wished each other luck. I hung around the park for a while and made some great pin trades. Another bountiful day!
Then it was off to Downtown for some pin shopping. I wanted to get lunch at Earl of Sandwhich but it was way to busy. There must have been a hundred people in line! A little bummed and feeling tired I headed back to the resort for lunch and a long nap.
I got up, showered again, and caught the first bus to the race. I texted Regina on the way and we met up outside the info tent. It was fun to meet another WISH team member (and her husband Kyle). We talked for awhile and I had to check my bag as the line was getting long. I met a few other WISHERs along the way and eventually ran into our teamate Eva and her husband, also nice people. Then we parted ways and I found Mary and her friends. ( this bright green wish shirt thing really works) I immediately liked Mary! (Did you get your Guinness at EPCOT?)
Then it was off to the corrals for the wait for the start.
While making my way though the masses, I was invited to join another group of WISHERS sitting down while waiting. One was named Tracy, but I forget the others. As the start neared we were lamenting not using the potty for a third time!
It was another good group of people and I had fun talking with all of them! By this time I was getting tired after being there for about three hours. I was also getting hoarse from all the talking. (Liz usually takes care of that, while I usually grunt in agreement).
The start of the race went smoothly and my adrenaline started to kick in. It was well after sunset by this time. It took about a mile and a half for the crowd to thin out a little and the first mile took me about ten minutes. Right at the pace that I wanted to be. It became hard to read my watch as we progressed as I couldn't see the screen in the dark. (the light isn't very bright) My pace picked up a little as the crowd lessened. There was less entertainment along the course than I expected but I did get to high five Timon it true Team Hakuna Tamata form.
First came the Animal Kingdom. I have run three Everest races here in the dark so it there wasn't anything new there. I kept picking up time as I went so I was very happy staying below the 10 min pace. I did have to stop for water sooner than expected and more often than expected, I wanted to conserve my fuel belt stash. I think was dehydrated from the time spent out and about during the day, even though I drank plenty of water and powerade before the race (and all day).
I started to run out of saliva so I made extra sure to drink up and try and avoid heatstroke. Mentally, after exiting AK I had to fight the urge to slow up as this is where the Everest pace usually slows for the scavenger hunt. I really didn't see it coming, but kept going as I wanted to beat 2:11.
At about mile 6, I used some of my shot blocks and it was some long stretches of road until the Studios. There was some sections where it was completely dark without any streetlights, so I had to be careful not to turn and ankle on a curb or a seam in the pavement. I saw two people trip along the course, one girl tore up her knee pretty bad. Immedately she was helped by others around her, so I kept going. Another guy wiped out and got right back up again.
I was about four minutes ahead of my 2:11 goal when I started struggling about mile 9.5 and my pace started slowing. It seemed like we were in the Studios forever! At the expo the speaker said it was the longest route inside a park that they had ever planned. I started getting cramps in my left calf and my left shoulder cap, which is new to me and had me pretty worried. By mile 11, I had some more shot bloks and used up most my water and had to walk about 100 yards. Then I was determined to make it to the finish, I knew I had lost some time. Inside the Studios they put us up on the jumbo tv as we passed through the stunt show area. And the best "Oh Wow!" moment happened as we turned the corner and they had the buildings light up on the Streets of America. All the Osbourne Christmas lights were on! This got me going and I upped my pace a little, even though I was still dragging.
After the Studios, the cafffiene from the bloks must have kicked in as well as the knowledge that I was going to complete the race. I started to fly and was passing all kinds of people. I was still cramping a little but it was do or die time for me. I caught up to a fellow WISHER who was wearing a sorcerer's hat and Mickey gloves who cheered me on and said I was too fast for him! He had passed me on the road a few miles back at a out and back portion. This pumped me up, ME, too fast to keep up with??? That made the race for me! I think I covered the last mile in about eight minutes and gained some of my time back. Eva said (on facebook) that her husband caught me on camera finishing strong. I nearly collapsed after the finish and had another runner keep asking me if I was okay. OKAY? I didn't care if I hit the ground, I JUST FINISHED MY FIRST HALF MARATHON on will power. I'm sure my finish line picture look likes heck. After I calmed down somewhat it was finally time to hit the potty.
I washed the burning salt from my eyes and made my way through the massive chaos inside the bag pickup building. I almost lost it with a lady behind, complaining very vocally about having to wait, why wasn't this more organized, ets..
It was all directed at me because I was her nearest target. I wanted to clock her for bumming my exhausted high, and really had to bite my tounge. Once I got my bag it was off to the crowd in EPCOT (freaking huge!) I could barely get through as so many families where waiting for their runners. By this time, I was having trouble walking.
I finally found my way over to the America Pavilion to have my medal engraved. No wait at all, and had time to eat a banana pound some powerade. I sat for quite awhile and then used my food coupons for a celebratory beer and pretzel. Regina and Kyle were going to meet me, but I got cold as I cooled off. I had to bail on them and make the really long walk to the other end of EPCOT for the buses. I was done, I realized how overdone during the walk.
On Sunday morning I met with Regina and Kyle for some Tonga Toast at the Kona Cafe in the Polynesian. It tasted better than I remember it! I think I got them hooked also! Kyle gladly finished what Regina couldn't

.
Then I headed over to MK for some rides and more pin trading. After, I monorailed over to EPCOT for the F &W.
It turned out to be a great weekend all around! I'm so happy I can now put some faces to some of my teamates! I had a fantastic time meeting all of you and getting to know you better, and can't wait to see some of you again in January! Thanks to everyone on this team for helping me make this race a reality!
I finished in 2:07:26 without injury. Not bad for the first half marathon of a 41 year-old cancer survivor that was a fat kid who couldn't run a mile in high school!
I know this is one heck of a long post, thanks if you took the time to read it!
Now onto another half on Saturday, and back to WDW with Liz and Robert on Monday! (this time to relax!) - Mike
